I want to try doing some handles and maybe some rolling pins using a Celtic Knot design. Ambitious with the idea of doing some Christmas gifts with it, nevermind figuring it out.... Anyone ever try designs like this? Working on a jig for this tonight....

Might those be inlays?

This is clearly not going to get done in time for the holidays. I spoke with someone who is clearly more talented than me. Much more work goes into prepping the blank than turning and finishing. Four separate cuts and glue ups... Working out the math. I don't have the throw to do a rolling pin on my Jet 1014, but am definitely going to be starting a couple blanks soon. Here's a shot of a finished blank I found online....

hahaha, good luck. I can't even cut a straight line...lol. What do you mean by you don't have the throw on your JET? Does that mean the blank is too long for your lathe? Mine is a 36" if you want to come over and turn on it. It will give you an excuse to get your ass over here! ;)

use a taper jig on the table saw
either a store bought one or a homemade like Norm used.

not that hard, just time consuming

I have done singles before. Secret was not cutting full height of the blank. Then there is getting the slot to the correct width, and re-sawing the inserts....which I suck at.
Bruce, I am making up a sled. That way I won't be pushing my aluminum taper jig into the saw blade..

I read an article on doing it not long ago. Don't honestly remember where

Go to SOL and look at the Decorative Grips Photos sticky thread. Billy 40 uses the exact techniques required by cutting and gluing up foam blocks to get the same types of patterns in turned grips from those blocks that you want in the wood. Its not that hard but you need to see the basics then its trial and error from there to tune the exact patterns in the glued up the blocks to get what you want in the subsequently turned pieces . There was a guy named Bernie who also did wonders in turning grips before he died. I'm sure you'll see his full name there also and may be able to look up some of his work too.The patterns you get are amazing when you see the rectangular cross sections all glued up before and after they are turned.

That's because you got that big old Rigid lathe like mine.

HAHAHA. Maybe that and cause I use a hand saw to cut off my ends because I haven't got around to getting a table saw or band saw. lol

I pulled a Jet band saw out of my brother's basement last weekend, so I can make the 12" Craftsman available to you at a very reasonable price.......

thanks guys. It'll be a little while before I can buy any new tools. My family got it's Christmas present a little early this year, a new flat screen, blue ray, HD cable service and a new TV console. I told them we should get all new wood working tools instead and build as a family, but for whatever reason, I was over ruled?! lol
