Hey guys,
I have a craftsman 9hp 2 stage blower. I got it from my neighbor last year and another neighbor broke the shear pin. He replaced it with a stainless bolt last year. I removed the bolt and put a shear pin in. My question is do snowblowers typically have 1 or 2 shear pins? There appears to be a place for two of them, 1 has the shear pin, the other looks like a regular bolt. Thanks.

Never use a regular bolt. Use what ever shear pin that craftsman recommends for all of the openings along the blade shaft.

I would say two shear pins. they are there to protect the machine, if something gets caught you risk snapping a shaft or busting a gearbox which would be much worse to fix. If the holes get too worn you won't be able to keep shear pins in there unfortunately...

I have the same snowblower, two shear bolts. One for each Auger. You can get the MTD brand ones at Home depot. Get a bunch and keep a few spare. I just ordered a friction rubber wheel, time to replace mine.. Mine will only go in forward speed 1

shear pins are designed to "shear" off when the load is too great
bolts won't shear off...they wanna bend first. just sayin

get extras if you find them. It's kinda like being without that one swimbait everyone else is using that you didn't pack

Yup. Sheared off my first one with this machine today. I had picked up a dozen and put them in a cloth bag with two 1/2 inch box wrenches and a punch about four years ago. Hung them on a hook in the garage. Never needed them until today when I managed to find a boulder in a snow bank.... Stopped the engine as soon as it locked up in the auger. Damned if I could find that bag..... Got a couple out of my brother's supply.
