2 winters ago I popped a hernia while coughing from some bad cold I caught. I believe John did the same thing at the same time. Mean cough. Never had a hernia before so totally ignorant about things.

Anyway , I'm looking to get it fixed in January if possible. My main concern is whether I can get along on my own right after the operation or do I need to do a week in a rehab place between the hospital and being home alone.

Also , what's the best fix now? Straight sew up job or the patch? What are the pro's and con's?

Any hernia operation veterans here with opinions?

You'll be fine on your own Mike as long as you can get by without lifting anything for the first week or so. I had the mesh installed and haven't had any problems since. Roughly 12 years ago now.

I also had the mesh. You should be fine after a day or two with a few weeks of no lifting. Popped mine carrying a bucket of tautog.

Most all are out patient surgeries.

I know weight lifters who had patches put in and had no problems

The mesh, first right then left way back when, one day of light duty then back at it. 🔨

nothing to worry about
lifted allot of rocks and boulders
in my life... sort of as a challenge
and have had two hernia's
i wish all surgeries were that easy....

oh... i had the patch and no problems
there's a uterine patch you hear negative things about (not the same one)
the patch they use dissolves or becomes incorporated over time
so no worries

SH, had two of them. In and out same day surgery. You'll be fine with some pain
and taking it slow for 6 weeks.
Most times the Surgeon will decide what kind of repair is needed once he
gets in there. Good Luck.

most hernia's are basically your diaphragm busting through
the muscle tissue from straining/lifting ect... and then they just shove it back
inside, staple you closed, slap on a fiber patch to take the stress off the dissolvable sutures and close you back up.
More prep work getting you under anesthesia
and sterile then the actual surgical time required. Piece of Cake!

Had the mesh done about 10-12 years ago for hernia in the groin.
No big deal.
3 small incisions and day surgery.
A bit painful the 1st 2 days
Gradually fine after that.

Been dealing with a bit different one for that last 10 or so years for acid reflux.
That kind of sucks !

i had acid reflux too (light)
but found i was eating too much- too late
before bedtime....
so learning that digestion requires to way much work
i started the 20 minute rule ...putting down the fork
at the slightest hint i was getting full or satisfied
and waiting .... and that, ENDED that.

Well I'm in for late January. Will be an in and out same day thing with an incision (not scope) and mesh patch. Gulp! :)

i buy Vitamin E oil 30,000 units
and place it on incision scars to make them
smooth and flat and less visible (over time)
really helps you heal up well imho

take more vitamin C too

Had a Double hernia (inguinal) when I was a kid, I just remember it being outpatient, very limited movement for a few days, don't watch/listen to/read/ etc. anything funny because it will hurt along with coughing, and make sure you are alright with anesthesia and the medication for afterwards. I got sick from the anesthesia and that made life suck.

I had stitches for both and they dissolved, be sure to have a good sitting position that is comfortable because getting up from laying down isn't going to be fun. Just get rest!

Had the operation yesterday. Scar is bigger than expected but pain is not too bad. Hopefully it stays that way! :)

that is a NO NO

Two weeks after surgery and doctor says everything is fine. Not even a second follow up appointment needed. Says to be very carefull lifting until early march then gradually just go back to normal.

Got to say it was not very difficult overall. Couple of days with the burning pull around the stitches but overall fairly easy experience.

i have learned to robotize ... over the years
(my back is a freakin JOKE)
meaning......i make sure that i am 100% Square to my task
i utilize my leg muscles the most and focus on never over extending
or over stretching to get the job done.

I really ENJOY trying to lift things that would otherwise
take six men by using my wits, leverage , blocks and
doing it slowly and carefully simply because there is no need to hurry.

Big thing is to be aware I just had it fixed and not just grab something heavy without thinking.

Some places you cannot even see it was cut at all. Other spots along the length there is a little red line.
