Layin in bed watching it now. Great way to start the day. I've never targeted weakfish, but I can tell you I will be this year. Looks like fun, and they're gorgeous fish. Can't wait for the spring. Sigh......

Very soft mouths. Only ever caught one off of Tashmoo in mid-eighties, and it was probably by accident. Used to be one of the fish in the Vineyard derby. Really gorgeous species.

I got one back in 09 that was just shy of 14 lbs. they were feeding heavily on a worm hacth and this one actually slurpped up a whole squid floating in the rip. it was really cool cause the bass and blues were mixed in so every cast was a surprise

Got one last year by Cleveland Light when scup/BSB fishing. Was a C&R since only 15" but it counts in my book.

As a kid caught them every spring in late 60's and early 70s in the bays of LI. Great fish on light tackle. Lots of fun. Very tasty and mild. We had them for breakfast with eggs! I got a few in the 13# class and saw some as large as 16# back then.
During the early 80's there was a run that came up this way. There were some big fish that would feed with bass. They were even a derby fish for a few years. For the same period on BI they caught some monsters in the surf right with the bass at night feeding on sand eels. I saw a world record fish get fillet-out by a local there and never saw the scale. was over 20# easy...
These fish have dramatic cycles where they disappear for years then return. I am not sure if they know exactly why. I have seen commercial gill netters fill the cockpit of a boat and unload them for $0.15 /lb back in the what they call "the good old days" during the spawn in 4' of water. Made me cry as a kid. All those fish filled with roe.

They love shrimp. They go in the bays with eel grass in search of grass shrimp. They would gorge themselves on them. Lots of ways to catch them but If you really want to catch a tide runner (tiderunner are weakfish > 10#) then chum with grass shrimp and use light gear near a channel drop off in a bay with moving water. Beautiful fish. It is kind of like a saltwater rainbow trout...really pretty with yellow fins and a pinkish pearl like hue to a speckled back. They put up a decent fight too. You can rip their mouth pretty easy...hence the name weak. Don't horse them in too quick.

I heard they showed in decent numbers last year along the mainland bays in MA. I saw the show. It brought back memories. Lets hope they don't get wiped out before they make a comeback.

A charter guy I know was getting them during seabass/ scup trips. I guess they were pretty common in the east end of Buzzards bay early last season.

Yea I figured they must be in there, Chris, but I can't believe after hundreds of spring bass in the rivers I've never caught one by accident. The guys on today's show were pretty specific about keeping presentations on the bottom, and most of my early season offerings are topwaters. Maybe weakfish just aren't into that. Either way I'll try some weighted soft plastics to try and score some this season.

all it takes is cinnamon or cayenne and or L argenine (a protein)
all of which widen the blood
vessels as they are elastic

This is embarrassing, but when I first started SW fishing in the early 90's I caught a weakfish from the stone pier at Woods Hole. I had no idea what it was and assumed it was some kind of (toothy) bait for stripers. I chunked it up and tossed it out for stripers. No hits.

I like the local name squeteague better. Always find it interesting when fish are called by different names depending on where you are.

I might watch it if I weren't out fishing.

It hasn't been on for some time, so I just gave up looking for it.
Besides, it does me no good to get worked up about blitzing stripers in January, when they could be showing one of the few ice fishing shows they've done.:smash:

That is what gets me jacked the last few years. BE's are my favorite stand up fish by far. What a battle and simply outstanding to eat.

That is why I wish I was 23 again...my body can only take so much of it and craps out.

That was a very good show. I wish they spent a little more time explaining the greenstick layout and the other lures they trolled and why. The nantucket guys troll a lot of beamish gear. I tried this this season with very good success as well.

To sandmans point, i wish all the shows the do, they would take more time on gear setup etc.
