The arm on my Vega that you use to move the stylus left and right is bent. This causes the tool to bind on occasion and is a real pain in the butt. I tried heating it and bending it back with channel locks but didn't have any luck as I'm sure I can't get the metal hot enough. I'm afraid to try to take the entire thing apart as I am all thumbs when it comes to this sort of thing. Just wondering if anyone could offer up any ideas on how to get this thing right....I don't want to have to buy a whole new dupe.

Thanks!

Is it affecting how the dupe actually works? I will bet you order just that piece.

After looking at pic I can see that it would and does effect the shafts forward movement. Bite tge bullet and get a new shaft. You may be able to straighten the shaft in a heavy vise, but it will probably still bind. How did this happen?

It is a bit difficult to see but it is bent pretty good.

Hard to tell from the photo but are you referring the wheel (black handle) or the shaft that enters the carriage? looks like the shaft is bent upwards from the photo.

If so, remove that shaft and squeeze the bent area in a vise. You can also lay it on a flat surface and try to hammer the bend out. If you are afraid to take it apart just film it with your phone so you know how it goes back together. :uhuh:

Looks like the shaft that goes into the carriage. I would jus replace that, its hard to get it straight, you could put it in a vice and get it close but i see why you have an issue.

if you want to take the shaft off and bring it by the shop I'll put it in the press.
Worst case you replace the shaft anyways

The hand wheel shaft with the gear on the other end? Take it apart and send it to me if your not in too much of a hurry or have Mike bend it back straight.

Thanks for the responses and offers to help. I think i'll see if I can run some bodies this weekend and then try to take it apart next week...I will definitely be filming the event! I'll throw her in the bench vice and see if that does the trick. If not, someone will be getting a PM. Thanks guys.

now that I can actually see what you are talking about with the larger picture it should be pretty easy to fix that. I've straighten shafts much worse than that before. I'll bet it comes back to usable straightness pretty easy. P.

Took the shaft out today and put it in the vice.... she straightened out nicely. Not perfect, but damn good....she's smoother than ever!

A follow up question,

The cover is missing on my Vega so it gets covered with sawdust etc...do you guys lube that area and if so, what do you use?
Thanks again!

I keep my cover off, I use a dry silicone spray so the chips don't stick
