View Full Version : Excise Tax Question
Raven 02-26-2014, 03:33 PM If the amount of your excise tax
is based upon you vehicles value
and it depreciates each year in Value
Shouldn't your excise TAX decrease a small amount
each year rather than INCREASE ?
Or is it because the Tax "rate" has increased
by the individual town?
iamskippy 02-26-2014, 03:58 PM They increase the tax to offset the depreciation.

Swimmer 02-26-2014, 04:35 PM Has the excise tax increased? That rate is pretty static. Never have seen a vehicles excise tax increase unless what you paid the first year wasn't based on twelve months, and the second year of ownership was.

Redsoxticket 02-26-2014, 04:50 PM The corrupt state of the nation, Rhode Island will most definitely increase or maintain the exercise tax of the previous year. MA excise taxes have always decreased in past years until the minimum is reached. This year could be different, I've yet to open the excise letter

FishermanTim 02-27-2014, 01:54 PM Not to stray too far from this topic, but I saw a portion of a new story that had me concerned.
It seems like the government is thinking of taxing your 401K if you save too much money. I hope I have gotten this wrong, as I hate to think I'm saving for THEIR future and not my own!!!! :wall:
Won't be long now before they come to your house to collect your first born children! :smash:
Oh, and they can stop calling it an "Excise" tax, as it is nothing more than a state tax, plain and simple.
They don't use it for what it is intended, so give me a break and stop calling it something it isn't!!!!!
Raider Ronnie 02-27-2014, 02:06 PM Fact.
Vehicle excise tax was created to raise funds & support WW2
I wonder when that war will finally be over........

Raven 02-27-2014, 02:37 PM well the WAR AIN't over for Cannabis
and it's been on going since 1947
think about TEA for a moment before you get your Panties in a bunch
OVER Taxation of our TEA by ENGLAND our Grand MOTHER of taxation....
gave over the taxation Torch to the Individual states after we won that WAR
with the RED Coats
That said....and the reason i brought up cannabis is because over there
in Colorado the recreation side of it is Being TRIPPLE Taxed
tripple dippen down in Colorado -> sounds like a song lyric don't it?
the Medical side of it though is only taxed at 33 1/3 percent
because it is considered medicine....
they expect a windfall of over 600 million in tax revenue
for the recreational side and around 268 million for the
medical side.... of the taxation
Don't you see the Sheer Irony of this Situation?
Because if that crap flies here in New England where the
revolutionary war STARTED...... it will SET a precedent
to :point: Tax other recreational Activities similarly ... i think
Raven 02-27-2014, 02:40 PM oh and on the excise TAX
yeah i forgot about the price originally paid for the vehicle
sets the tax rate
not the actual value or bluebook value
Got mine in the mail last week.
Me= 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee (piece of sh^t)
My wife: 2010 Ford Fusion
Me: Excise based on $3500 value (I'd be lucky if I could get $1K)
Her: Valued about $10K
My Excise: $87.50
My Wife: $60.00 (yes, we did not read this wrong on the bill)
WTF?
If I go complain, they fix the problem for me, yet increase hers way up. Or they don't fix my problem and still raise hers way up.
If I don't complain, I pay $87.50 for a POS....and she pays a measley $60 for a nice ride.
Redsoxticket 03-04-2014, 09:53 AM It is possible that your getting a excise tax break for multi vehicles if registered in the same name, after all you can only drive one car at a time.

nightfighter 03-04-2014, 04:50 PM Calculation Of The Excise Amount
The amount of the motor vehicle excise due on any particular vehicle or trailer in any registration year is calculated by multiplying the value of the vehicle by the motor vehicle excise rate. That rate is fixed at $25.00 per thousand dollars of value. The value of a vehicle for the purpose of the excise is the applicable percentage for that year of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price for that vehicle. The applicable percentages are set out in Ch. 60A §1 as follows:
In the year preceding the year of manufacture 50% (This one is kind of weird, if you ask me...)
In the year of manufacture 90%
In the second year 60%
In the third year 40%
In the fourth year 25%
In the fifth and succeeding years 10%
The manufacturer’s list price for any particular vehicle is the price recommended by the manufacturer as the selling price of that vehicle when new. It is the manufacturer’s list price rather than the actual purchase price which will control for purposes of calculating the motor vehicle excise
At least the tax goes into your town's coffers as opposed to the state's.
Raven 03-04-2014, 05:07 PM these bills always arrive at the worst time of year
prolly gonna be a four fill up oil heat season this year
one for the record books
