Ass. director of Mass DMF. Interesting take on the science. He just stated what he sees. Increasing water temps seems to be a huge factor in migration of southern species into our waters, and some of our others moving north or offshore. Clear that they are aware, I wouldn't say catering to, but aware of the +$ billion spent by recs. Very aware that no matter what they do, one side is not going to be happy. They put a LOT of weight into the 2010 year class for the current state of the fishery, but the following year classes shown on the chart weren't even close to that size. I spoke to hi after the lecture about why it is still 2 at 28". He feels that every state is going to be asked to give up 30% of catch next year, and they are simply holding this in their back pocket for when that comes. Just sharing. He was forthcoming so please do not use this post in an attack.

Last interesting tidbits. They have tagged a lot of stripers by sewing transmitters in them to actively track their movements. Most if not all passed through the canal..... Just another manmade effect on the fishery. As he said not good, not bad, just is.
Aerial views of shallow harbors show barren circles of sand or mud around moorings from chain sweep. No chance for eel grass or other vegetation to re establish.
Secondary sewerage treatment has played a part in the decline of winter flounder. They were much more plentiful around the older, less treated outflows.

nice to be able pick the guys' brain a little..... seems as if they are at least aware of many of the issues that concern most of us.

(sure would be nice if some of those southern species showed up here...... some Cobia, jacks, or tarpon would certainly lessen the sting of the striped bass' decline)

well sounds like it's going in the right direction, that's interesting about holding the rec limit in their back pocket, I hope they take it out sooner rather than later
