View Full Version : What's a good jigging reel for the surfcaster
stripermaineiac 04-17-2014, 06:26 PM I've been looking at some of the new toys out there. Lots of nice stuff. What do you think are the good ones. Plus why. Then what are some of the weaknesses?Lot's of use destroy gear every year looking for the one reel that does what we want.:fishin:
tysdad115 04-17-2014, 09:26 PM After burning through my Stella 10K, every year the gear set is wiped third overhaul from Shimano. This year I'm trying the new Diawa ISLA 7000H. We'll see how it holds up.

how do you burn thru a stella every year? Are you the type of person that can break an anvil?

Every year I sent it out it needed new gears and bearings due to wear. This year they did them again but on the slip it said bearings are "discontinued" now. I used it a ton , never had any real issues with it and you can't beat the $30.00 charge from Shimano for the overhaul. But it will now be a plugging reel , I was using it for everything including jigging 4-6oz all night for alot of nights. Maybe it was too much on it , but for the $$ I wouldn't expect it to have to be overhauled majorly every year.
stripermaineiac 04-18-2014, 06:16 PM How about for both. There are loads of anglers that can't afford to experiment. jigging from the surf ie the ditch wasque,Quonnt,or about any fast moving current has different challenges but jigging is jigging. This is to give food for thought for many that read from the sidelines
Jackbass 04-18-2014, 07:06 PM Got you! I prefer something with a quick pick up. As opposed to plugging I prefer the slower retrieve.

you should buy a dogfight, or a 20k stella,
ripitsik 04-18-2014, 08:23 PM Saltiga hands down

My stella sw5000 and Saltiga 4500z both got new main and pinion gears this winter. Shimano cost $30 shipped, Saltiga $220 shipped. When the time come, I probably will look at the saragosa.

Currently VS250 you just can't beat it. Given my druthers to add an additional 800 plus dollar reel I would add a 275 strictly for jigging the canal. But the 250 is fairly bullet proof. I like my zx22 better for plugging but the 250 is a hoss

JohnnySaxatilis 04-20-2014, 10:56 PM 09' Empro 5500. still ticking. rediculous pickup. might #^&#^&#^&#^& the bed this year...
stripermaineiac 04-21-2014, 04:59 AM I was talkin to an old ditch troll the other day and he still loves his Abu 7000 and his Penn 706.Both have loads of mileage on them.
My old emblem pro is still going and my 7000 is on its 3rd rebuild. The old red one.
numbskull 04-21-2014, 05:09 AM Any experience with this one? RA was pushing it over on SOL. Expensive but fast retrieve, optional gearing, looks plenty strong, and weighs 10-12oz less than a comparable spinner.
Matt D 04-21-2014, 11:40 AM I picked up a Torque 5 spinner at the end of last season. Going to try and kill it this year.
Had to send my Stella 10k in for service after a couple of months of heavy jigging. It was supposed to still be under warranty but they still soaked me the $30 plus shipping both ways. I love the reel but think it might become plugging only. Especially since Shimano's planned obsolescence has just about taken effect.

If you're thinking conventional, the smaller Penn Fathoms(12 and 15) are really sweet, and under $200. Very smooth, great drag and a surprisingly tame caster.
Patno6 04-24-2014, 07:48 AM I just picked up a torque 7 for ditch jigging. Seems like it will be a beast and I can't wait to put it through it's paces. The 7 is too heavy for all around work, but I am sure the 5 could be a grest hybrid reel.
