View Full Version : Its About the Plug 2014

Big, small, who cares? Lets see what your (or someone else's) custom plug can do. We all learn from it.

To start here is a 26" bass (it looked huge compared to what I have been catching so I measured it :rollem:) that ate a 4" Musso small darter clone. The plug has done well for me, which is a pleasant surprise since I was not impressed when I swam the prototypes. Interestingly, the plug swims better with larger hooks than I tested with. The forward hook position seems to balance things out well.

Caught this one few weeks back on a Billy DeLizio "redfin".

I had been throwing plastic with no takes and switched to Billy's plug which offered a larger profile, tuned the line tie down to keep it on top w/ wake. The fish cooperated. Thanks Billy for saving what was turning into a frustrating night. 36.5" released

Throwing a Blonde Terror yellow pencil this morning, the bass went 15 lbs on the boga, it hit as i was just lazily finishing a retrieve in about 4 inches of water, :rotf2:certainly wasn't expecting that.

The blue went 6 lbs, caught another blue that went 6 lbs on a 24/7 blue mackerel pencil which snapped a one treble off the front hook, has anyone ever had that happen to a vmc before??, all fish released to swim again and they did. Not a bad first morning out, considering there were quite a few people there this morning.

ANY LUCK?

When your fishing partner ask "Do you even know how to catch fish on plugs anymore?" (I fish a lot of eels/he fishes a lot of plugs) I had to put on a needle, land a fish and make him take a photo of it.

Sin: fishing eels
Ultimate Sin: fishing numbskull's plugs with a eel jug over my shoulder. (Sorry) :devil2:

at least you recognized your mistake

I can't leave the eels alone. :smash:

It's a hab's clone from numbskull. Birch or Maple I'm guessing. Fish hit it as it tagged bottom and I'm guessing that is why it was not he siwash.

this is one of christians aka chrisjoes metal lips he gave me. its a atm jr hybrid of sorts, cast decent considering too.

i threw it the second night at cutty, slow waking it on the top and the fish were just blowing it out of the water left and right, was a blast to watch, must have happened 10-12 casts in a row, then finally hooked up with 2 decent fish on it.

have the fish pics on the camera, ill upload later on

took a nice chunk on my buddies white darter in the pitch black too

Last week on vacation I found some wood caught fish worthy of some pics.
First one was my copy of the Pichney large white Danny that I turned thinner dia.. fish was 47" and most likely 40 plus lbs. The next fish was just slightly smaller on a med white old version BM danny I made. The night before this I had a few high 20 lb fish on the white med danny. They were fished 3 cranks, pause, twitch another 3 cranks, pause. Seemed to do the trick.

ProfessorM

Couple nights later the first pic is a mid 30 lb fish caught on a really cool plug. It is an over a foot long needle made by a gentleman from Conn. that I got in a trade. Gigantic is the only way to explain it. Was really fun using that plug and the fact it floats allowed me to fish it real slow with a lot of pauses like few nights before. Fight was great but the fish put the siwash thru my finger landing it, lucky I crush the barbs. The next fish was the best of the few nights. I wandered away from the few guys I was fishing with that night and again the med white danny just twitched on the surface and reeled extremely slow was the ticket again. The fight was one of the best I have had in years with tons of drag being taken on several great runs but being only sand in front of me there was no anxiety of losing the fish on rocks or structure. Very enjoyable. All the above fish were revived and swam away. I do sell fish but it was quite rewarding letting these fish go.

Nice Vacation you had there PM.

Was that sytle of retrieve with the medium white Danny something new that you have been trying recently or just what they seemed to want that night......and how many other sytle retrieves did you try that night before finding the one that worked?

ProfessorM
06-30-2014, 08:41 PM
friend said he got a good one night before on the pause so I used that info. It would not be the way I would normally fish a danny. I like a slow retieve on a danny but the way I was fishing it never really got moving like a danny. Took a good 4 minutes plus to get the plug in from the end of the cast, super slow. It worked for the first fish so I stuck at it . I had been pissed I had left the dark colored danny's at home in Lakeville too and only had white. Glad I did. Learn something every time out.

Here is how big the needle was. Hangs out of my bag about 5 inches

Thanks guys. I don't want you to think this was some kind of premeditated plan of attack. I had run out of places to find decent fish and took a shot. I had gotten a little intel the day before but intended to waste some time there anyway being free of the constraints of work. Bottom line is fish swam by and I caught some. No fishy swimming by I end up home early and not back there again. Got to love Lady Luck sometimes.

I have not had much chance to get out and fish this year but when a friend called and told me how good it was the night before, I had to go out once I got home early enough from a night out with the wife. I credit some good karma from donating 2 units of red blood cells that same day. It was a new moon and I tied on a black needle that I think was made and given to me by Diggin Jiggin Dave Ross.
My personal best from a beach(I have 3 40's from the canal) it went almost 46" and 35 lbs on the boga, she lives to fight another day. Thanks to Folifish for the photography and lighting :)

I got this one on a plug I got from Johnny in 2006, one of 3 plugs from when he first began making plugs. I modified it then with some weight in the belly, and yesterday I added some lines on the sides with a sharpie.
It is offset turned and does a tight spook action. Sorry for the weird angle from a cell phone pic, the fish was fat and did not have a snook front end to it like it looks like. Anyway, great plug by a great guy! Johnny you rock.

First cast on it after 15 on a white magic swimmer (all shorts). I will never again say a full moon is too bright. Visited my dad at Bourne National Cemetery this week. Rarely use a tail hook on his stubby needle or his darters. After seeing almost all hits on front hook. One less hook to deal with in the dark for a quick and safe release. Do the same with some swimmers too (even plastics).

As usual I fished a lot of bait this summer but now that tournament season is more or less over I've started putting in some time fishing the needles I made over the winter. Took a few outings to finally land anything on them, skunked once, and dropped a couple fish on another outing, but finally connected last night with fish of 22 and 30 pounds (and dropped another decent fish). Have to say that I'm not used to dropping so many fish, maybe that's why I don't usually fish plugs...

Challenge accepted! I stuck with just fishing needles every outing last week. Had at least a couple fish every outing, nothing really big, mostly high teens to mid 20s and one 32 pound fish that took a green needle. It's been a lot of fun seeing how they perform in different areas with varying conditions and catching on something I actually made is great. I've even starting considering what color to throw, never had that problem with eels...

Now all I have to worry about is not running out of plugs before the end of the season.

I turned a half dozen of these yellow dannies last year. Due to family obligations and work I haven't been able to get out as much this past year. In early Nov I got out before sunrise to witness nice size fish cruising the surf line chasing bunker schools.

Everyone was throwing yellow darters and bottle plugs. So, I follow suit and I can't catch a thing. After 5 to 10 casts with each plug I throw on my homemade "slim" yellow danny and on the first cast I catch a decent size bass. Screw that factory made stuff!
