View Full Version : Strange Spring...so far
piemma 05-15-2014, 05:11 PM I have been fishing Narr Bay and the Canal. All I have managed is schoolies. Lots of them but nothing over 22".
I found bunker 13 days ago and have livelined all of my usual haunts and haven't gotten a chase yet.
55 to 59 degree water so there should be some 15 to 20# fish around.
I'm just thinking that the big girls will be late.
jasonsnova 05-15-2014, 07:27 PM 59 degree water?? Sounds warm. I don't think it even hit 50 where I fish yet.....

Redsoxticket 05-15-2014, 08:36 PM I hope the bigger fish are just late but the reality is that there are fewer of them.

yup
Raven 05-16-2014, 05:50 AM the big "wet" has not yet arrived
it's going to happen a month late
i can remember not that long ago
that it rained like a S>O.B> during
JULY .... LOOK to Africa for abnormalities
when a huge storm busts loose from their coastline
it's on it's way here... usually florida bound
but like H. SANDY some go northward
bassballer 05-16-2014, 06:45 AM Yup. We should be on #15 to #20 fish by now. Can't believe those pogies are being molested yet. I say another week. Good sign that some keeper bass are starting to be caught.

JohnR 05-16-2014, 06:52 AM It is early so anything can happen but there aren't as many big fish. How are the Jersey & NY Boys doing?
Rappin Mikey 05-16-2014, 07:06 AM They were about a week late this year at my Spring spots.
piemma 05-16-2014, 07:38 AM I'm thinking next week should bring some decent fish. My record book shows that back in 06 and 07 RIRockhound and I has 22 to 25# fish in the surf in Narragansett between May 20th and 25th.

FishermanTim 05-16-2014, 10:01 AM Everything has been thrown out of synch this year.
If you consider the unusual freshwater action, and late spawning fish, it's logical to presume that a similar effect could do the same to the saltwater migrations.
I only hope that there are big fish this year, and that all of our collective efforts here in the NE weren't all just a colossal waste of time. (What I mean is our efforts to be better anglers, practicing more C&R.)
I'd hate to think that anything we did (or didn't do) was only benefitting the fishermen down south. Only time will tell if and when the fish show up.
ThrowingTimber 05-16-2014, 10:32 AM Its still early, I think once the snow melted everyone expected 20 pound fish to erupt..

2006 was a banner year for my pops and I, bunker in the river and big bass on em, topwater action was crazy.
Thinking that its a week behind for my usually spots and logs.
But any day now

there is waaaaaaaay over 2 million # of pogies in the bay ......... Ark bait started working last Monday ..
either its gonna be late cuz the water temp or we are alot closer to the end .
ya can only keep them once ><><><
Redsoxticket 05-17-2014, 12:20 PM How many lbs of bunker are allowed to be harvested in total for all pogey boats the bay?
I assume without digging up the regulations that it is likely an infinite amount as long as some are left behind
piemma 05-17-2014, 02:03 PM I don't know the poundage but I do know they cannot go North of Conimicut Light, into Wickford, East G or Bristol harbors. Not sure about Mt Hope Bay.
There is a s *#@ load of them but all south of Conimicut which make them fair game for Ark Bait.
piemma 05-17-2014, 02:07 PM The Atlantic menhaden advisory panel of the Rhode Island Marine Fisheries Council recommended that fish managers leave a small amount of fish in the state's quota (13 percent) to ensure that commercial fishermen on small boats can continue to fish throughout the spring and summer seasons. These small boat fishermen supply bait shops with menhaden to use as bait for striped bass. The council voted to approve recommending that director Janet Coit establish a set-aside for this fishery.
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission established Rhode Island's quota at a very low level, 78,000 pounds, based on historical landings in Rhode Island -- not fish caught in Rhode Island. However, the DEM's Narragansett Bay Atlantic Menhaden Management Area monitoring program (one of the best in the nation) has determined that millions of pounds of menhaden are caught in Rhode Island but landed in Massachusetts. The advisory panel has recommended that Rhode Island's marine fisheries commission members advocate for an increase in quota based on this catch data.

Probably start this week. Canal and points west should pop any day now if it hasn't already. Been busy with work, home improvements and coaching both kids baseball teams thus far so no fishing yet.

timmah 05-17-2014, 07:16 PM A lot of pogies have made it past the trap, but no takes yet.
