View Full Version : Canal
Moron_Saxatilis 06-06-2014, 06:44 AM Planning my first canal trip next w/e. Any suggestions on lures. I mainly flyfish but, I am finishing up a 1204F rod. I have some plugs and jigs, rind... what weight jigs will I need up to? Also how is night vs. day fishing this time of year, will be doing both anyways.
Thanks,
Brian
Fishin is very slow. Hopefully it will break loose soon. Plugs and jigs are fine. Jigs will run from 2oz to 4oz depending on the current. Good luck. We have had no luck so far. Saw one short caught in two days.
Moron_Saxatilis 06-06-2014, 10:50 AM Thanks Bob,
Hopefully it will pick up by next w/e.
ProfessorM 06-06-2014, 11:17 AM Checked again this morning. Yawn. Again did not make a cast

Eric Roach 06-06-2014, 01:02 PM Wow -- are we seeing a slow beginning to this season due to the cold winter & spring, or are we experiencing the ever-worsening state of the fishery. It's been tough out there.
piemma 06-07-2014, 03:49 AM So here's an interesting question. How can you absolutely crush fish one morning and get nothing the next morning at the same place?
Chris and I had one of the best days in years Thursday. Friday, same place, same bait, marking lots and lots of huge fish and nothing. Live lining Pogies for 5 hours..... nothing. We fished 8 different spot.....nothing.
The only difference was rain on Thursday and clear and NW wind on Friday. I guess the pressure may have something to do with it but I cannot think it would be that dramatic a difference.
Every time I think I have this thing figured out, I find out I don't.
seadogg 06-07-2014, 06:07 AM Paul I read some scientific study about the effects of barometric pressure on fish and this guy concluded that the effect is nil. He claimed that the lack of fish activity had more to do with light conditions. High pressure is usually associated with bright clear skies, while lows are more often cloudy or overcast. Naturally, we associate better fishing with low pressure systems.

piemma 06-07-2014, 06:13 AM Bingo! I believe you are correct as it was bright and fairly sunny yesterday. One of my friends here on the board was fishing in the same area only in the dark and he had 7 decent fish so, there you go.
Looks like it's time to go to the 0' dark 30 hours.

Just to throw a monkey wrench into the works, I had 3 awesome days this past week. Caught 20 or 25 fish all over 20# but nothing over 25#. Still, it was really great fishing. Then the front blew through and yesterday the bite died.

The one thing that I've been able to pin point from my logs is that falling pressure triggers the feed. The sharper the fall, the better the bite. Finding where it's happening is another story….

thursday night my yak got pulled all over by the same size school of fish. 37"-42" fish on every pogie and a couple of 10lb blues as well. last night it was a ghost town

Agreed! Must have been that low pressure front that turn on the bite.
