View Full Version : "Stripers jumping out of Water"

Gee, seems like OTW has found out where all the bass have been hiding, and tells you in their weekly report in the Herald!

Yeah, and they have also explained where Bigfoot, Loch Ness "Nessie" and the mermaids can be found as well!!!

They "claim" to have been receiving numerous photo entries for the "cup", but they fail to mention whether the fish are cows or just-keeper size fish.

Maybe they are right, but it reads more like a self-promoting article, where the reader will head out onto Boston Harbor or Cape Cod Bay (based on the OTW reports) and catch nothing, and OTW will reply "Well, you should have been there yesterday/last week!"

OH, and they added an important line at the end of their second paragraph that reads" ..Most importantly, if you want to catch a fish of a lifetime, be on the water.....

enough said.

They need to sell magazines so all of their reports are promotional in nature. You would think reading the weekly report this week that the fishing has been epic up and down the coast. Pogies! Mackerel! Huge bass! They even claimed squid were abundant at any lit pier all the way to Gloucester. No one is catching squid up here.

I don't know what happened to this site. It seems every other post is filled with negative vibes, doom and gloom, or finger pointing. What do you suggest OTW does? Should they call it quits and tell people to give up fishing? Seriously, come on.

I'm with Bob. OTW is the only publication that hasn't posted a major article about the status of the bass fishing we're all experiencing, or at least an accurate one.

I don't subscribe anymore but there has been a lot of info and links out there with pictures of giant schools of bass in CCB. Those fish are all over my beach right now and they're about 14" long. I think the article estimated them to be 20lbs (i might be wrong on that)?

OTW used to post links to the complete catch report for the striper cup and you could go back a few years too. I used to open them in excel and sort by weight/date/state to see what month the larger classes usually showed up. Each year, there were something like 2500 fish entered and 90% of those fish were under 25 lbs - with NO shot at winning anything.

They have one of the largest audiences of anglers anywhere, they should be educating the masses. Maybe the weekenders who keep fish just to give to the neighbors wouldn't do so if they knew.

They really need to look in the mirror.

If there has been a lot of negativity on this board lately, it's because we're all watching our fishery get wiped out and know how long it's going to take to recover, IF ASMFC actually does anything to help. It is striped bass.com after all. I think OTW has a board. Maybe that's a bit more positive...

It's not the site's fault it's the fact that the Bass fishing is on a very slippery slope and sliding down quickly.
OTW can do whatever they want. The fact of the matter is it's not OTW, or comms in New England or recs at the Canal, it ALL OF IT!

I have been a strong proponent of game fish status. I believe that in order to save the Stripers from extinction we need a coast wide ban on the sale of Bass. Everywhere from South Carolina to Nova Scotia.

It is not going to do any good to have a moratorium in New England and have the commercial guys at Oregon Inlet in NC gill netting a million bass this winter.

Last Thursday I got into a good bite of 15 to 20# fish. I caught 8 or 9 and released all. I watched in total amazement as 4 guys in a boat near me caught smaller fish on chunks rather than live line and kept every fish that came over the rail. I said something to them and the captain (?) of the boat told me to mind my own *&%$# business.

So I am now in favor of a total moratorium. Keep NOTHING like we did for 4 year in the late 80s/early 90s and ban the sale, forever, of Stripers. Either that or be prepared to fish for Bluefish and Fluke until they are also wiped out.

Pete, I am at a cross roads. Put everything I catch back and have someone else kill it or kill it myself and give the meat to family, friends and the homeless shelters.

I think they confuse Bluefish and Striped Bass a bit too often.

I don't take the site seriously but when Bass are said to be "all over, lit up, etc. at every beach", there is pretty much nothing or baby blues.

When there are Blues, baby Bass.

That and I think they base it all off 1 day out of the week where the fishing was decent, namely when they take a charter boat.

The main problem is the misinformation that we get fed by (formerly) respectable sources. Instead of stating what we need to hear, they spew out crap they want us to hear in order to put more $$ in their pockets.

If there were a ban on striper sales and a moratorium on catches, it would have to be for the entire eastern seaboard and not for a few northern states. What good would it do to regulate the catch of fish here if they are being removed by the ton down south?

What it looks like is that we will have to suffer in order for the southern states can "try" to continue with their fishing practices as usual. Our concerns over the YOY classes is only telling them that there will be more fish to catch, regardless of size!

Great point. Never even thought about that.

I think we all feasted with the lack of fin bait, especially big fin bait, up and down New England from the 90's through the mid 2000's. Even when the Peanut Bunker showed strong in the early 2000's it was still great because they hung out in the waves, still keeping this inshore bite on, no matter what the population of Striped Bass.

Now, at least the waters I venture in, it's mostly the Mack and sea herring show, and for the inshore beach action and rocks, this sucks. It's epic when the action moves into a bay and if you are lucky to get in on it, it can be a feast. But in my opinion this does not bring stable inshore fishing. Even in the kayak it becomes a challenge. Nothing stable at night either in tight to shore, and it shouldn't be when they are gobbling big fin bait in the sun mid afternoon. Hopefully a little luck comes by this new moon week for the inshore crowd. I know I'll be putting my time in this weekend.

So I'm hoping for more squid to show up asap and the macks and herring to move away and to make the best out of the rest of the season.

That's been my point right along Tim. Make the Striper a game fish and ban commercial sales period. No sales in restaurants. No farm raised Stripers on the menu. That kills the black market

But you are on point. It has to be from SC to Nova Scotia.

Yup, squid are still going strong. Floated past the squid brigade two nights ago and they were pulling them up one after another. All the while, we'd been 3 waying and casting eels all night in nearby big fish spots with one 24 inch fish to show.

We are getting a lot of fish but nothing over 22#. Nothing under 18# either. Live pogies and chunks sometimes but not on purpose. The chunking usually happens after the "Yellow eyed bastards" chop up the the live pogy.

BTW, I'm not complaining.
