Price of striped bass on Cape Cod at fish house - $19 per pound ... 2 pounds for dinner $38 ... it is a lot ...

... but add up everything you buy for fishing including rod, reel, line, lures, leader material stuff, waders, boots, cleats, belt, belt gear, surf bag, surf top, hat, light, gloves, gas to get there, maybe a hotel, suv for fishing, rod rack, maybe a bike for fishing and other gear, plus food while fishing ... and that may not be so expensive ... as any fish you catch and bring home may be more per pound on the first trip than $19 per pound ...

.... include a boat and other stuff with that and forget about it ...

... BUT ... the experience of fishing and catching a fish in a beautiful setting on the ocean ... PRICELESS - all that other stuff doesn't matter one bit when you're out there and in the zone.

On Nantucket 14-15 years ago I saw $29/#

I like striper but will take cod / haddock over it any day of the week.

Bass is mediocre at best. Many more tasty fishes in the sea. Buying unbled bass with the red meat still on it would be a real disappointment for that kind of money. Better to go out to a nice restaurant and get waited on.

As I return a "keeper", I smile at the irony of releasing a fish worth so much on the market; however, the pleasure of catching one is greater than eating one.

Agreed that cod/haddock are better to eat any day of the week. Striper always tastes better when you catch it.

how much is rock salmon a pound , read an article in a local news paper about a fish coop selling rock salmon , its dogfish , they want to generate more interest in the fish so they are calling it some thing else :biglaugh:

"rock salmon" is what its called in some European countries. I don't know what it retails for, but ex-vessel is usually somewhere between 10 and 20 cents a pound.

Agree - must bleed them ASAP. Even better when you're on a rock and let them swim around on a stringer - really pumps the blood out.

Its all in the marketing they market it as the Forbidden fruit or limited engagement Kinda like the Chilean sea bass . sounds exotic

Compared to Fluke which I will eat with admiration and the kids wont leave the table until its gone . with Bass cant get them to sit down

Never heard that reference before

the reason i said that striper's should be valued like caviar
was because of how the sturgeon was hunted to near extinction
because of it's roe and superior eggs..... and so i saw a parallel

as far as how well stripers taste, i think grain fed farmed swipers in circular enclosures
just off the shoreline down south would taste just as good as wild
or it would be hard to tell the difference. it certainly would take the pressure off and stock the great lakes while your at it.

Yes and Chilean Sea Bass were toothfish. Once the mid water fish were all wiped out, the boats had to go deeo. Changed the names to make them more appealing.
