Lots of early and possibly false reports but A Malaysian Airlines 777 down over eastern Ukraine (Russian Controlled) http://cnnworldlive.cnn.com/Event/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_17

Reports that 23 Americans were on the Manifest

Ukraine calling this as being shotdown by a BUK missile SA11/SA17 which are nasty midrange systems under control of Russian / Separatists.

it's odd when the FAA has been warning planes to avoid this area, that Malaysian airlines still does. Read earlier how almost every other airline routes flights around this hotspot.

What kind of idiot thinks it's safe to fly commercial airlines over an effective war zone?

Well. They did just "loose" a plane, so this seems to be par for the course.

Going to change the dynamic of the situation regardless of what happened. Mistake? Likely won't matter...

Good news is that earlier reports of Americans on board might not be true.

seems like that jet liner that exploded leaving New York never got resolved.
i've heard stories that flight 370 was landed in desert in Saudi Arabia and the 17 people on board from one company killed. surgical strike

this 777 might have been mistaken Identity...
which Pilot's have to give consideration for....

it's not like the terrorist's are just going to ask them what's on board before they press the launch button.

Craig - the other plane is at the bottom of the ocean. This one is in a field in the Ukraine.

Awful for the families of both

I thought that they said a short in a wire caused the fuel tank to explode.

Major: "These are Chernukhin folks who shot down the plane. From the Chernukhin check point. Those cossacks who are based in Chernukhino."

Grek: "Yes, Major."

Major: "The plane fell apart in the air. In the area of Petropavlovskaya mine. The first '200' [code word for dead person]. We have found the first '200.' A Civilian."

Greek: "Well, what do you have there?"

Major: "In short, it was 100 percent a passenger [civilian] aircraft."

Greek: "Are many people there?"

Major: "Holy [expletive]! The debris fell right into the yards [of homes]."

In a third intercepted conversation released by the SBU — which the agency says took place about 40 minutes after insurgents seemed to realize they had shot down a civilian plane — Cossack commander Nikolay Kozitsin tells an unidentified separatist that the fact the Malaysia Airlines plane was flying over the combat zone likely meant it was carrying spies.

"That means they were carrying spies," Kozitsin allegedly says. "They shouldn’t be [expletive] flying. There is a war going on." (http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/07/18/smoking-gun-intercepted-calls-point-finger-in-jet-downing-at-russian/)

Actually there were 2 crashes. 1 after 9/11 which I believe they either blamed on the prop wash from another plane or the pilot had his flaps wrong???

The other was like 20 years ago over Long Island and I believe they blamed that on the short.

Yes - a couple months after 9/11 (which wound up suspicions pretty quick) an Airbus crashed after IIRC the tail fell off due to flying through the wake turbulence of a 747 that took off less than a minute before.

TWA 800 was concluded as the center fuel tank explosion likely caused by a short circuit from a frayed wire.

It's increasingly looking like the scenario is this was a Russian weapon moved into Ukraine just last month and manned by trained Russian military...then snuck back to Russia a few days after.

I'd wager we already know what happened but need the impeded ground investigation to play out before making legal accusations. Considering the size of the tragedy it's gonna hurt.

This is playing out like a Clancy book.
