Fly Rod 07-28-2014, 07:08 AM A very good friend of mine that does very well fishing from shore wins the one day "Rhumbline Striper Tournament" with a 31 lb. fish beating out 40 entrants and taking home 500 bucks.....he out fished mostly all boat fishermen....another friend, a boat fisherman took 2nd place....the shore fisherman who also commercial fishes from shore has basically out fished the commercial guys too...his cost to date is about 40 bucks for a tote of herring compared to the cost the boat guys cost when ya consider fuel, dockage...congratulations to him...:)

So what is your point? I didn't buy a boat so I could catch more fish. I bought a boat so I could enjoy more time on the water with my family.
I am still a surf fisherman and have been for 46 years. Just because I have a boat doesn't mean I don't enjoy the surf.

His point is that you do not hafta have a boat to catch big fish.
Congrats to your friend for winning that one day tournament Fly Rod!

OK, I get it now. I didn't interpret his post in that context.
beamie 07-28-2014, 08:11 AM Is the boat comm fishing up there that slow that a shore comm fisherman, that can only sell 2 fish due to the new regs, is outfishing the boat guys?
ProfessorM 07-28-2014, 09:06 AM He probably has a boat permit so he can take 15 fish but chooses to fish from shore. Know a bunch of guys doing that this year.

no boat permit.....he is consistent catching his 2 fish limit....commercial fishing here has been very slow...when U consider the boaters going out 4-8 hours a day getting one or 2 fish, some days zero and the fuel burning my friend is way ahead.
Glad I sold my boat....owning my boat was to make money while having others pay for my pleasure.
Sea Dangles 07-28-2014, 09:36 AM What the heck does that mean?
To make money while having others pay for my pleasure...
Anybody with enough time and luck on their hands can win a dumb fishing tournament, especially if it is one day.

I chartered over 18 years....the people that charted my boat paid for my fishing and dockage and fuel...lets say I was never a yachter...LOL
it is not luck to go and catch fish 20lbs. and over consistantly

We do not bother to identify what herring we use....every 3 -4 days over a million lbs. R brought in used for lobster bait or striped bass fishing and foodsuch as pickled herring... in some cases depending if their bellies R blown out.....U trying to get me in a catch 22 with river herring?.......U do not get up early enough...LOL:)
A few years back a fish plant had a trash dumpster with 2 sliding doors... as a joke on one side he put a sign said,.."Striper Bait 20 bucks." on the other side the sign said, Lobster Bait, 15 bucks." striper people that did not know any better would ask for striper bait...it all came out of the same dumpster......:)

Paul,
Can you do that? Isn't the boat the boat. I don't think you can go fishing on your buddies boat with your comm boat license........
I thought this was the BOAT lic. not the fisherman license.
Or they know and just leaving it in the grey area......

John,
You are correct.

ProfessorM 07-28-2014, 07:53 PM Not on a buddies boat but from shore yes. I have a boat permit and have been fishing from shore this year so I got checked with 4 fish by the Enviro police the other day at the canal and he checked my license and told me everything was A OK. Lots of guys are doing this now. A lot of them have no intention of fishing from what ever boat they are registered for. It is how they get around the 2 fish compared to the 15 fish. I do plan on fishing from my boat but some days I can't so I pick the shoreline. Grey area is a good description.
beamie 07-28-2014, 07:59 PM That's interesting. I would not have thought that is ok. Hope it is if I ever choose to fish from shore more.
ProfessorM 07-28-2014, 08:09 PM Yeah I like the rule, for lack of a better term, as do others. I have done it for years. I often fished from shore if I didn't feel like taking the boat out and I knew there was a decent bite at a shore spot. This year is a little different becasue of the high price they are paying. When you have consistent shore action, which we have pretty much had this year where I fish, and they are paying upwards of $5 a pound you don't need a lot of fish to make a decent payout and going from shore you are not investing in all the things that go along with a boat trip. Now you are probably not going to land as many fish from shore as a good boat guy will but you won't have the expenses either.
ProfessorM 07-28-2014, 08:19 PM I will say this though I own 2 boats. One 14' tin and my 19' glass boat. I can't or are not suppose to fish in my tin boat when I have a permit with the other boats # on the permit. I often would have liked to have used my tin boat if the bite was close to shore or inshore but if I got caught on that boat with my permit and the other boats reg.# and more than 2 fish I would imagine I would be in deep doo doo and obviously I could not use someone else boat either.
Fly Rod 07-29-2014, 10:15 AM U can use another persons boat for the commercial fishing providing that the owner of the boat does not have a commercial striped bass endorsement boat license....after the March 15th deadline they gave anyone with a shore license 30 days, the opporttunity to switch to a boat license and the shore license was voided, I do believe....:)
