go to hardware store
buy pvc pipe leftovers (like a 3-4 foot section)

cut one end at an angle

spend money saved from buying a store bought sand spike on storm shads
:D

4 1/2 foot piece of the thinner Ree-bar with a PVC pipe attached to it. Keeps you clear out of the waves/weeds. :D

What they said....:).....and especially for up here with the rocky beaches, what Striperjerk or Bloo said.....

I have 3 home made sandspikes, all cut from PVC pipe.

2 of them are just the PVC, but since I fish Duxbury Beach and some other rocky shores frequently, I made one with the angle iron attached......no way, no how, no matter how hard you try, can you get just the PVC anchored enough thru the rocks on Duxbury Beach or the like....the angle iron (aluminum) does the trick.....

Now in Jersey or Hatteras, or certain spots in Rhody, with just the fine sand, just the PVC pipe is fine......

(oh, BTW, cut the business end of the angle iron to a "V" point, just as you would with the PVC pipe)

Take a PVC pipe say 2-3 feet long 2 - 2.5 inch diameter, got to one end and cut it at angle so it's pointy on that end... pointy to dig into ground with. If you're still not sure, go to any saltwater tackle shop and look at one. It's probably less complicated to do a basic one than it is to make a sinker.

a machine or a rig?

johnr, some people use a metal spike which makes pentration to the sand easier. that's what im trying to do. i checked my garage saws, they are used for woods. i tried one of them to cut down the dulled spike. what saw should i use?

If you are cutting metal than you probably need a metal blade and not wood. What exact saw are you using? Hack saw, some power saw?

I carry a spike to hold my rod when I change lures ect. other than that I am the sand spike...

Hacksaw to cut metal, any Hardware store, you can even get by with just taping up a hacksaw blade enough for a handle if you need to.

What's a sand spike and how do you use one????? God gave me two hands and I only fish with 1 rod. too much to carry when walking the beaches. When I got to "relieve myself" Head above the high water mark, gingerly push the butt end of the rod into the sand. Voila...Rod holder. Only works well with rods with thin butts.
