RIP. Liv2Fish 08-06-2014, 11:46 AM Big swells from the hurricane passing by. bart 08-06-2014, 12:00 PM I could be wrong, but I'm guessing it was a sustenance fisherman who wasn't expecting these conditions. Very sad.. bassballer 08-06-2014, 12:01 PM I heard that on the radio this morning. It was big out front. T&P to the family. JohnR 08-06-2014, 12:01 PM News said 58 years old, from Mass. BasicPatrick 08-06-2014, 12:13 PM Praying Jackbass 08-06-2014, 12:17 PM Definitely not a place to turn your back on terrible news Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device Clammer 08-06-2014, 12:25 PM sucks . But what are people thinking ???????? I went north today digging ><><. shadow 08-06-2014, 12:31 PM thoughts and prayers go out to his family. but there are places to fish in big water thats not one of them. DZ 08-06-2014, 01:00 PM Not that it can't happen to an experienced fisherman (like Gary Mathias a Middletown surfcaster at Sachuest Point a few years back) but the subsistance fishermen generally have no concept of swells, tides, slick rocks, etc - they are very suceptible to these accidents. These areas adjacent to deep water are so dangerous. Very sad. bart 08-06-2014, 01:07 PM The tricky thing about the Tail and other deep water spots is that you have to figure out how the waves rush up the surface of slick rocks. Sometimes the waves that don't appear as big as the others will catch you off guard and take out your knees. Without studs you don't stand a chance from going down... bassballer 08-06-2014, 01:09 PM I hadnt seen at swell on the reef like that in a while this morning. I cant believe that someone drove in the BT parking lot and decided to venture down and fish. piemma 08-06-2014, 01:49 PM Brenton Reef was huge as was everything in front. Got as far as just past the Castle Hill Light and made a u turn. I too heard the call by the CG and then heard it cancelled. I assumed the guy got rescued. I didn't realize he died. BB, good meeting up today. Bout time! piemma 08-06-2014, 01:50 PM Not that it can't happen to an experienced fisherman (like Gary Mathias a Middletown surfcaster at Sachuest Point a few years back) but the subsistance fishermen generally have no concept of swells, tides, slick rocks, etc - they are very suceptible to these accidents. Food or fun fishin isn't supposed to take your life. BigFish 08-06-2014, 03:01 PM It can happen to anyone...even the most seasoned veteran fisherman....anytime...anyplace! Be cautious friends.:uhuh: 1dozenraw 08-06-2014, 03:46 PM Is this the same one that's posted as Hull Cove on the other site? I've fished there in somewhat big surf and it's the waves that wash up behind you and catch your legs on the way out that are scary. But when it looks dangerous, it is and I just watch. JohnR 08-06-2014, 05:22 PM I would assume the same - had not seen anything other than Beavertail but I have been away from my computer all day. Not to diminish anyone dying buy I would think Hull Cove is more likely a surfcaster than sustenance fisherman, just by raw numbers and ease of access. Have certainly seen all types all over that place. Raven 08-06-2014, 05:34 PM it's so deceiving i remember being rolled up the bottom like a ball then i got straight but the wave SOOO strong pushed me hard and ground my chest flesh off .... i staggered up the Beach vowing never to underestimate the sheer power mother nature and it's waves have ever again. sad news indeed RIROCKHOUND 08-06-2014, 05:39 PM I would assume the same - had not seen anything other than Beavertail but I have been away from my computer all day. Not to diminish anyone dying buy I would think Hull Cove is more likely a surfcaster than sustenance fisherman, Not in the last 5-10 years... :smash: JohnR 08-06-2014, 05:47 PM Not in the last 5-10 years... :smash: I know, I know, when I was typing that I was thinking it was less cut & dry than it used to be ;) massbassman 08-06-2014, 06:31 PM It can happen to anyone...even the most seasoned veteran fisherman....anytime...anyplace! Be cautious friends.:uhuh: So true... at least a couple times a season a wave will remind me of how powerful the ocean is, and how quickly things can go wrong. Tragic end, very sad. T&P's to his family. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device Clammer 08-06-2014, 07:00 PM its probably the same one ... it happened on the east side to the north of the light . which puts it closer to Hull cove .. bart 08-06-2014, 08:48 PM probably Lion's Head. The sweep going around that point has dropped a couple people on here into the water there. Needless to say they were lucky to get out. That spot is mostly dominated by subsistence fishermen now, though... bassballer 08-06-2014, 09:26 PM probably Lion's Head. That spot is mostly dominated by subsistence fishermen now, though... damn Bart.. had some good nights at that spot going back years ago. hadnt thought about that spot in a long time. not a place you even think about fishing in a big heave. Paul, good shooting some BS today. Lets do it again. ivanputski 08-07-2014, 01:11 AM I was at beavertail light this evening with my family, and what do i see? 2 guys and a girl pencil popping in flip flops very close to the big surf... these were people that seemed to know better (surfcasters who werent fully geared up and jumped down to cast a bit) but man... even my 5 year old said it was a foolish thing to do, especially on a day that someone lost their life. jimmy z 08-07-2014, 01:39 AM That is one place I love, but also one place I fear! This is sad news! God be with the family at this time of sorrow. Slipknot 08-07-2014, 05:46 AM Very sad to hear this :( It's easy to sometimes be complacent and have a close call or worse. I won't fish there without an inflatable, and even then korkers are no sure thing to keep from getting swept off. Green Light 08-11-2014, 07:42 PM Tragic. :-(. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
