Holy Sh--o, Ronnie has finally retired. Ross this is an
excellent reason to do the MV derby. If any off island
dude can catch fish there it is Ron McKee and he has
the stories to prove it. Plus he knows all the top rods
on the island. Now if only there were fishies there.

This might be a really dumb question, cause I know nothing about them, but do people eat them, or fish for the fight?

nightfighter
08-31-2014, 10:00 AM
Cats wouldn't eat them..... If the bonefish is the fish of a thousand casts, then albies are the fish of five hundred casts. While blues put up a nice fight, they will hit anything. False albacore are much harder to find and get a hook up. Once you are able to do that, the fight is pure adrenalin drag burning joy!

Summed up nicely. The fight on light tackle is pure addicting. My wife was annoyed I've been fishing 7 days in a row, and all I could say was "it's funny fish time, sorry"

That said, fishermen are slaying albies all over the vineyard.

She mentioned that I got a little over excited and was yelling at her...and waving hand signals where I wanted to go. I will give her credit though... she put me in perfect position to get at them

Had a good shot at them over the weekend. They were in close for about 10 minutes. Def within casting range, but it was not to be. I also bought a Tica last year to target these fish. You think they are frustrating from a boat, try them from shore. :fury: I had a shot though. Did not seem to want my green metal. They were on peanuts and a variety of bait. I'm probably wasting my time, but what the hell.

ProfessorM
09-02-2014, 11:21 AM
Honestly I think a boat is even more frustrating as you feel like you should be getting one but from shore I usually know it is going to be a one in million shot so I have lower expectations. Racing back and forth and all over creation for hours on end to have them go under as soon as you cast is pretty darn challenging but on a few days it is easy as pie. Guess that is what keeps you going back for more.

Hope so. This is basically the 2nd year I've targeted them and the first year seriously. I have been using 30lb Suffix with 30lb flouro. Like I said I was stubborn, but after being unsuccessful the last week and with all the fish around, I admit I'm doing something wrong. Tomorrow four feet of 12lb flouro and no extra hardware. Uni to uni. With the water so clear and the sun high it 'should' help. We will see. Just need the fish to show up and test it out.

In line with some of what you're saying.......there is TONS of bait out there. Not many predators however....seen plenty of schools of juvey blues.....where are the bigguns? Where are the Bass?...Bait will be gone before the leaves fall.

It's been a long time since I've seen so much bait. Most of it seems to be very small. Peanuts, bay anchovies, and some smaller bait I can't ID. I've also seen the little harbor blues with not much else on the bait except the funny fish lately and some smallish bass.
Other areas there are lots of butterfish, macs, and juvi herring. Bass seem to be concentrated in confined areas and not spread out as many have been saying all year long.
Right now I'm only concentrating on these tunoids, but something is definitely 'off' and has been for quite some time when it comes to bass and blues.
Certain areas that I've fished ALWAYS held blues at dawn and dusk, but this year they just aren't there and weren't last year either even with mega bait around.

Is Falmouth or the Vineyard the best bet for this weekend? I usually fish out of Westport, but would like a shot at the little tuna's, although I get enough frustration at work; don't know why I do it to myself on the weekend too:(. Last year outside Quicks was so frustrating, on them all morning without a sniff and I cycled through all the usual goodies, maybe this year I'll get lucky.

Found them very early south side before the winds picked up. A single pod only came into range once for a few minutes for this lowly surf fisherman. No takes. Other pods seemed to be only little blues under the birds. Winds picked up and there was no way to reach them so took off. Checked the calmer waters to the west later on and it looked fairly dead except for a few birds and a couple boats way too far out.

Have yet to find anything close to the mayhem that occurred a couple weeks back.

Seems there are some close to shore late in day on a south side beach after swimmers go home but up and down pretty quick. Nice and aggravating even for boat bound people, shore bound would be maddening.

Took my son today, albie virgin. He's caught a bunch of bonito but hasn't caught one of these speed demons. He's hooked! Had three doubles, ended up with a dozen and a shearwater released unharmed.

Things seem to have really quieted down on my pre and post work excursions. Cannot find any bait, birds, or fish showing anywhere close to shore. The exception was further east around Kennedyland a few days ago where I couldn't reach them with the wind in my face. I blame days of NE winds for moving the bait and fish off shore.

It was a gorgeous morning and I found a #^&#^&#^&#^&load of peanuts with fish on them for hours. Too bad they were mostly 20 inch bass lol. I actually took a respite from Albert and I hit CCB - needed a break from the futility of chasing the ghost fish. Back to the south side tomorrow. Maybe the change in wind will help change my luck. :smash:

How did you make out in CCBAY I was thinking of trying there this weekend. Was water weedy?

East facing shore One spot weeds every drift, other area clean with those peanuts and bass. Expected worse weeds. Fishable. Only a couple around 30 inch. Picky. They would only take small jigs. Should have taken my albie lures haha. Blitz conditions off like a switch Sun up.
