Any of you gardeners have any idea on this one ?

The plants been dying back from where its rooted, I haven't had any issues with disease so far as I can tell. I havent seen any sign of squash vine borers but not sure what else to look for ?

The vines buried so its rooted all along it, at this point am I better off cutting off the main vine past where its sick to stop it from progressing ? I have 2 plants and unfortunately the sick one is the one with the good pumpkin on it.

I've read that if plant nasturtium around the squash beetles hate it.

you might have moles or chipmunks
digging tunnels underneath killing the roots.

word of additional advice

ANY plant can be uprooted and have its root system
completely examined ..... and then transplanted elsewhere.

what happens is though, the invisible thinner than human hair roots
die back so the top growth to root mass balance gets "OUT of balance"
making the top growth not able to be supported as is.....

trim back some top growth (20%) to account for this loss
and the plant won't suffer . Shade it for a day or two.

I never buried my vines. Probably is vine borer. If you can cut the vine beyond where the plant is with a little room to spare I would. Grown a bunch of pumpkins. Have been giving it a rest for a couple of years. Lots of room to hide in all those lea ves. If you go on the website new england giant pumpkin growers, sign up and pay the$20.00 a year dues. Well worth it. Where did you get your seeds?

Thanks I gave that a try, at this point it probably can't hurt. The seeds were just off the shelf atlantic giants, the pumpkins are small by giant standards but the one on the sick plant was still growing pretty fast.

DJ the last one I had was 500+ on August 1st when it dropped years ago. I would pop a beer and sit and watch it expand it was growing so fast. Then a squirrel made a condo out of it. These were special seeds I bought from Nova Scotia. Grew them a number of years. Actually thinking about doing it again starting next year. I have stored seeds from pumpkins that grew 1400 + pounds.
