View Full Version : Albie fever
Rob Rockcrawler 09-12-2014, 08:46 AM I have been so excited to get out this weekend. All i can think about. I woke up at 6 this morning and had to go through my gear and pack up to fish tomorrow morning. I get up at 10 AM every day, albies on the brain. My buddy leaves a voicemail about going very large last night in CT i could care less. Gimme 6 pounds of albie over 40 pounds of striper.
Guppy 09-12-2014, 08:59 AM . I get up at 10 AM every day, .
Work night shift?
Curious,

Yup, I cant sleep knowing i might miss out on a frothing, slashing feed, and the thought of my little SSV4500 screaming drag. I think its the fact that they could be gone tomorrow, and i dont want to miss one shot.
Rob Rockcrawler 09-12-2014, 09:58 AM I work an extended second shift being a salaried slave. 12-1030pm or so. Truck will be packed tonight. im getting a smaller reel since my buddies kid killed my stradic. I almost feel that letting people borrow a VS is better than letting them borrow something that needs TLC.

great work hours for fishing. Good luck!
BatesBCheatin 09-12-2014, 04:22 PM Yep, could care less about bass right now. Looking for my first Albie from the surf. Slightly obsessed is an accurate description of my current state. I know where they are, but the wind seems to be keeping them out of range unless I jump on a ferry. Praying for 48 hours of south winds, but it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon. Forecast is for maybe 12 hours of south winds on Monday/Tuesday and that's it for the rest of the week. Won't be surprised if these fish are blown out of here sooner than later.
ProfessorM 09-12-2014, 08:27 PM Funny I am just the opposite this year. I have gotten a few on a few limited trips in my tin boat and my boat is just a mile from east bay and I am already tired of the chasing. I more interested in bass right now. That being said I think
I may try for some Albert's on Mon. morning as they are calling for 5 from the north in my neck of the woods. Perfect for the tin boat. Good luck guys I hope you succeed in your search.

I thought you could less about bass right now?...:rotf2:
Like BBaller said, they did appear to get in close this morning, and they were in good numbers.
Had one break the treble this morning....(then that saying rang thru my head)..."you don't bring a knife to a gun fight"....:alright:

Not where I was. Friend got 4 fish, one decent one. Fish were around but peanut picky. Didn't see any blitzes or mass feeds.

Perhaps caring less about stripers was an exaggeration, but once in awhile I like to actually catch something instead of driving around and looking at acres of birds on acres of Albies thru binocs 500 yards plus off the coast. :wall: Believe me as I was out there on that 'big' rock I was thinking about hard tails and planning tomorrow's excursion.
I have changed out all my hooks on my Albie lures to VMC, but I might as well go hookless as it is the same result either way. :D
Tomorrow is another day... Albies only all day. Glad you boat guys are having a blast. When and if I get one I'll at least have the consolation of knowing that I didn't have to cheat to do it. :tooth: ;)

bobber 09-13-2014, 09:42 PM had about 20 to the boat yesterday..... and I want to go fishing again, but I'm not willing to out up with the crowds and BS that we had out there.
and ths was pretty civilized compared to Montauk when its hot over there
bassballer 09-14-2014, 08:16 AM There was a guy yesterday in a trophy trolling tube and work through the Albie blitzes. I had some choice words for him. He told me to eff myself. Good times

seadogg 09-14-2014, 09:05 AM I won't even bother to fish albies where there are crowds. These fish are notoriously finicky and a bunch of freaks chasing them around doesn't make hooking up any easier.

ProfessorM 09-14-2014, 09:37 AM Just avoid weekends and you won't have that many issues. I agree though crowds and Albie's don't mix well.

Got Stripers 09-15-2014, 06:12 AM I thought there was some rude behavior on the water during an Albie blitz, never thought I'd see so much of it at a boat ramp a 6am. Westport River is usually pretty civilized, mostly fisherman, not a lot of yahoo's, but yesterday I had someone cut in front of me to get in the water first, then when I got in the ramp space was all tied, up so I idled up to the end to pick up my partner after he parked the trailer and the idiot on the end decides getting to those albies couldn't wait the 30 seconds more I needed, he's backing out and I had to fend him off my backside. If it weren't for the 4 albies later that morning, I'd say I'm done, too bad my week is full work wise; love to get out again without the crowds.
Rob Rockcrawler 09-15-2014, 09:18 AM Saturday i did pretty good went 3 for 6. Sunday was another story. They were everywhere, i had one hit in six hours. I have never seen as many albies in my life, pretty much as far as i could see in any direction. I probably could have got them in a cast net.
bassballer 09-15-2014, 09:35 AM funny how we go from no albies last year to this type of influx. I had about 30 Bones is 3 days last year and not one in RI this year. Funny how things change year to year.
BEETLE 09-15-2014, 09:52 AM too bad so many a holes to deal with. This is all supposed to be about relaxing and having some fun.
Clammer 09-15-2014, 02:56 PM yeah right Beetle :smash:

ProfessorM 09-15-2014, 07:14 PM Hey Guppy you should have stayed more local. Got a bakers dozen this morning on a picture perfect day. Would have had more but eventually the other boats found me and before you knew it they had split up all the giant pods into tiny ones and thus harder to catch. In by noon.

Story of my life the last 3 weeks. I have found massive amounts of them four times and I always seem to be there on those days where they hardly touch a thing. Today I witnessed them getting caught, but only by two guys with certain flys.
I imagine I will see you out there again, but if you see me you should probably go somewhere else cuz no one is going to catch #^&#^&#^&#^& there. :bl:
Poncho 09-16-2014, 05:07 AM got humbled by them myself on Sunday they were every where and we only connected with one that we didn't even land but i must say there was allot of boats but everybody was respectful and we all worked together as to not scare them away. they were all around for hours it was awesome
ilovetwofish 09-16-2014, 06:06 AM I was in a spot Sunday from shore I fished for 4 hours, hitting fish in the head, nothing. These are the most aggravating fish. From what I could see all the boats except one, were working together and being respectful,it was a red and white center console. This guy was a DIK.

seadogg 09-19-2014, 09:29 PM Yea Chris, my dad and I have been out there a lot lately, but he's got me beat. Dude gets out for em like every day. And wdmso, I was using the smaller size in pink until I lost both to an overly sensitive bail. Tied on the larger and still managed a few, though. Pink was hot for sure. Oh, and yeah, that's us in the cat.
wdmso 09-20-2014, 10:51 AM Went South this AM from Newport with a a friend from work (freshwater guy)
wow what a school of Albies no pods there. Got him hooked up 1st cast pink larger hogie , he didnt know what was happening between the 3 footers and trying to get around the boat the drag screaming he got it boat side swallowed the whole lure , while dealing with that had him throw an Albie snak he hooks up again (smaller rod) I get the lure out when he say's I lost It!! Iam thinking ok NP I look at the reel There's no Braid just 10Lb backing WTF I say to myself
retie the pink hogie hes on again this time he gets cut off under the boat 2nd wtf JUST BOUGHT THAT THING LAST NIGHT at SWE . luckly for me and my gear the bite died the wind was picking up and was home by 1030

ProfessorM 09-20-2014, 03:58 PM Bait is real small where I am fishing and they turn their nose up at the hogy. Have had much better luck with the small Mac Daddy lure in pink , but the finish falls off after 2 fish which sucks but been the ticket last few times out for me.

bloocrab 09-20-2014, 04:33 PM After much looking, I thought I found them.....but ended up being a school of 3# bloofish busting on the bait.....another boater said they were mixed in, but it wasn't meant to be.
Did get pretty wet though.....
Perhaps I'll look in another direction tomorrow......weather depending.
Where are the bass (even the 20+" fish that should be working this bait)???? With all this bait I've been seeing, it should surface all predators,,,, if they're resident that is...:hs:

bassballer 09-21-2014, 10:42 AM I was on a mixed bag the other day. Albies, bass, blues. Massive feeds. There is so much bait, I don't think these fish are going anywhere soon. Haven't seen pogie schools like this south of the bridges in a while. It's a smorgasbord of fish out there
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
ProfessorM 09-21-2014, 05:35 PM Here is what they are feeding on where I am fishing. Small metal has taken 99% of my fish. Wish we had peanuts but I have not seen any since that first week. The bay anchovies are big brown stains in the water and you try and find the bait balls and hang out near them until the albies thrash thru them. How I got my fish yesterday. Gives you a real good chance at catching them when this occurs. I hang in close to shore to find these balls and being alone is a plus. Too many boats break up the balls of bait but being in a small boat allows you more shallow water to patrol and I think a lot of the other boats don't take you seriously being in a tin boat so they tend to ignore you which is fine by me. Nothing more satisfying than getting fish in front of a 30 plus foot 2 engine center console filled with know it all's. :uhuh:
rphud 09-21-2014, 06:03 PM I got some Mushies for those, but it is looking like I will need some more.

bloocrab 09-21-2014, 08:38 PM We were surrounded by bait-balls this morning with constant thrashing fish...:wall:...threw everything at em'
another boat pulls up, throws a large swimmer at em'...instant hook up ,,, The rip coupled with the 3-5' swells that had the bait confused was a rocking good time in my 18, but the lack of hook-ups was sooooo disappointing....from pink rubber, to all types and sizes of metals, green-stripped #^&#^&#^&#^&s, crystal minnows, assorted jigs, a kitchen sink, my mother-in-laws meatloaf......couldn't get the bastidds to engage. Although a yellow-eyed devil did cut-me off....
Still exciting to witness none-the-less, until you get back to fill the gas tank....:jump1:

Rob Rockcrawler 09-22-2014, 10:42 AM Had a number of shots at them yesterday but didnt hook up. Got 3 bass one may have been a keeper. It was funny i was on the rocks and it was rough and i was getting pissed at the bass. I was pulling the fly out of their mouths when they were trying to hit in close. 20lb power pro is great for casting but is some brittle stuff on the rocks. Got my ass completely kicked trying to land a 16" fish when the braid broke at the swivel. It was nice to see so many bass around though.

Gotta love the Pojees too.
bloocrab 09-25-2014, 09:12 PM Hoping to still find them out there this weekend...??
Anyone been on them as of today/yesterday?
Don't need to know where, just if....
BTW - It seems that most do not care to consume these mini-tunoids???
I find it difficult understanding why....now I'm a bait-eater (which could possibly explain why),,,I've tried just about everything cept for worms, from silversides to green-crabs.....from squid to mackerel, heck we even grilled pogies once :yak5:
That being said, one should always try something for him/her self before making their own decision. Mackerel is a very strong tasting fish, it has an acquiring taste when pan-fried. I LOVE IT. With some saucy potatoes, some pickled onions...a salted red-hot pepper, washed down by some adult-beverages,,,yummmmee!
These F/Albacore aren't far from that mackerel taste IMO....you don't need to much fire when grilling, keep them off the flame a bit, if you can smoke em'...I imagine they'd taste even better....but again, it's a strong flavor,,,not a fishy fish taste as in bad fish, but fishy strong.
Don't knock it before you try it ~
BatesBCheatin 09-25-2014, 09:28 PM I got into them from the surf y'day, but they are getting harder to find in large numbers the past few days from what I've seen and heard. It seems they are in more confined areas and not nearly as widespread - at least not on the mainland.
I've been curious as to their bad rep for the table. I recall being told by many that bluefish were garbage years ago, but personally I love them. Might have to give Albert a try if I get a bad bleeder.

haven't been out since Tuesday seems the big swell and wind Has broken up the bait and the Albies If i hear something I'll PM you I am looking to go on a day long hunt Monday the weather looks good the only thing is where cape and islands or RI
Might be taking a trip over to ACK in the VERY near future as beach fishing for albies (and some bones) has been on fire....
JohnnySaxatilis 09-26-2014, 09:25 AM sweeet. What end of the island? My dad got a bone on great pt in august on a hopkins. Usually west end is where that happens this time of year tho...
They've been at both locations from what I understand. I keep getting pics from friends who live there. Some FAT alberts coming off the beach!
wdmso 09-28-2014, 03:31 PM Haven't been on the water since Last Tuesday going albie hunting Monday looking for some suggestion for best chances Islands ? , Falmouth ?, Westport ? or RI

BatesBCheatin 09-28-2014, 07:45 PM Mid sized blues have been mixing in where I've been finding them. Not good. Tho a 10 pounder and a 20 something bass allowed me to get the slam from the rocks. Other than that, I'd prefer they go away till Albert goes away. Surprised it didn't happen sooner with all the bait around.
I don't think it even matters where you go at this point.

Seriously. Everywhere we went today we found them. We'd stop somewhere and jig up sea bass or live-line scup and pods of albies would come out of nowhere, from every direction. Never seen anything like it before.
On a sadder note, I dropped one that was EASY double digits at the boat this morning. Probably pushing 15lbs. We thought it was a SBFT when we first saw it. That one will definitely haunt me....

PaulS 09-29-2014, 08:18 AM What size fllouro leader do you guys use - boat and shore?
Thanks
I'm new to this, but I use 25# Flouro from both shore and boat...
iamskippy 09-29-2014, 09:18 AM 20 pound
Agreed, i have used 30 as well but wouldn't go any higher.
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
Rob Rockcrawler 09-29-2014, 09:47 AM 30 if its overcast and a little rough. 20 if they are being picky.
PaulS 09-29-2014, 10:13 AM I was using 10 from shore and used it on the boat but lost a fish when I couldn't grab the tail and ended up lifting it by the leader. I'll go to 20 from the boat.
Thanks all.
My son called me at work on Friday at 1:30 in the afternoon - he was fishing the rocks in Newport and was into a blitz of albies, blues, and bass. He took four albies on a seven inch gags grabber swimmer affixed to 60 pound leader. I just shook my head. He later showed me a video he took with his phone of albies searching for anchovies of chrystal clear water less than 3 feet in depth.
ProfessorM 09-29-2014, 11:09 AM Some days they will act like regular fish and some days they just mock you. I use 20 lb Power pro and 20 lb Fluor. Uni to uni knot.

JohnnySaxatilis 09-29-2014, 03:52 PM While we're on the topic of equipment, what does every one use for rods? I've been kinda fuzzy on what would be optimal. I currently use a st croix 7' 3/8 to 3/4...
Guppy 09-29-2014, 04:03 PM Sounds too light to me,, but then again I only get them up to the boat then lose em! :uhuh:
wdmso 09-29-2014, 04:25 PM Very good day put a good friend on 2 bonito and he boated 5 Albies 1 or 2 were bigger than avg , around 10 pound plus and we lost another 3 or 4 when it was we limited out on on Black sea bass . 1 tog and the bonito
fried up all 3 for dinner I have never eaten any of them they ranked tog, bonito (very surprised ) then sea bass .. nothing fancy dipped in egg dredged in seasoned flour and so tartar sauce. Again pink albie snak was the color of the day no fish on any other color? if you need more details PM me
wdmso 09-29-2014, 04:30 PM I use a 7 ft inshore ugly stick from Walmart nice bend and enough backbone to put some heat on them any 40 size reel with 20lb braid w\20lb fluorocarbon leader 5\1 or better retrieve ratio helps
Sea Dangles 09-29-2014, 04:49 PM I was fished for them today off NPT and did pretty good, lots of shots at them and a handful to the boat. I was using ljacks and hogies for lures. Am I the only one who uses 15 floro leader? My rod is a 7' rated for about 5/8 oz and the reel is a sustain 3000 with 20 lb test. The bait for the in WPT is gone and there was not much of a shot until I got past the SKT.
While we're on the topic of equipment, what does every one use for rods? I've been kinda fuzzy on what would be optimal. I currently use a st croix 7' 3/8 to 3/4...
perfect
BatesBCheatin 09-29-2014, 05:55 PM Blues were separate from the tunoids today. Finally got an Albert on metal from the beach and not a fly. Going to try for the Sarda since they seem to be around in another location. Bass were MIA.
I did use 12 and 15 flouro. I've found it's too light for fishing the surf around any rocks so I'm staying with 20.
BatesBCheatin 10-04-2014, 09:25 PM Hope it's temporary, but the fish were really thinned out today and some of their usual locations were barren. Probably due to days of N/E wind cooling the waters and pushing the bait farther out??? Other places 10lb blues had seemed to replace them. I'm fishing mainland locations.
wdmso 10-04-2014, 10:42 PM heading out Monday if the wind abates but concerned about dirty water

BatesBCheatin 10-06-2014, 09:26 PM Had to travel a bit to find them, but I'm sure glad the funny fish are still around in good numbers and in close thanks to the those south winds. :claps: So awesome just watching those green bastards ravage bait en masse. Did not see the bones today, tho.
There were some real nice bass mixed in where I was. It's odd to me that I didn't care all that much to bother with them???
Now, how do I get back there tomorrow without incurring the wrath and punishment of others!?!
puppet 10-06-2014, 10:28 PM Went to MV with my friend Bill(ctsurfrat)....The fishing for us was
slow and we really didn't see much bait or activity. The most feeding
we witnessed was 4 drives a dozen albies made around a jetty.
Lucky for me I landed one. My first.

It was a pretty cool chain of events. We stopped into #^&#^&#^&#^&'s Bait &
Tackle in Oak Bluffs, and Doug tells us to go to X for albies.
Hahaha...well this is the first time I have ever had someone from a
tackle shop give such solid info. It was so solid, that even Doug
himself shows up at the spot to fish the next morning. Then after I
hook up, he drops his rod and helps me land the sucker. Note, he has
only landed one albie himself this year and he drops his gear while the
fish are blasting through...to help me. Awesome!
I have only attempted to target these fish a few hours over the last
couple years. I totally lucked out and Mr. Magoo-ed the sucker onto
the end of my line. My only regret was to have caught him on such
heavy setup. I had my steelhead rod out on the trip, but never
unpacked it.
iamskippy 10-07-2014, 05:43 AM Congrats man, they are addictive, get on a good feen and hook a few in a row especially the larger onea and othet fish will never be the same....

we were out today again, but boy i took a beating. biiig waves/surf had the fish/bait spread out much more. All albies, but picked up a bone trolling from bird pod to bird pod. huge seas, subsided slightly after the tide turned, but still big. I am sore.
I noticed once the wind picked up yesterday we just weren't getting the bites even though they were still feeding savagely - weird. yesterdays fish were huge in general. much bigger than the bite in Falmouth a few weeks ago
BatesBCheatin 10-07-2014, 04:20 PM Wind today made things very difficult. Weeds made it impossible from shore. Fish were around too. Should have stayed home. I did see a couple of you getting rocked in your crafts. Thought you would have headed in once you cleared the inlet. Hope it was worth it. And yes, the fish that were around yesterday were big! Saw only one caught today. 6 pounds maybe. Done til the weekend. Withdrawals due in 13 hours.

Yeah I hear that. No wasn't on the walls that day. I've been fishing fishing more towards the west lately. Although all the bones I was catching were all from that area. I can only hope for one more bone before it's over. Might be the best tasting fish I've ever caught.

That's a real nice Bonito. Have not seen one in what feels like weeks. I'm def a catch and release guy, but I do want one more for the table before they go. Plenty of Albies around though which is def not a bad thing. They were back to their picky selves y'day after a few trips of being not so fussy. Went 1/1 with plenty of shots. May have been the boats, the crowd of googs throwing big bluefish plugs at them? Who the hell knows with these things. Just glad they are still around. #^&#^&#^&#^&, I'm missing a tide! Back out within 48...
I did happen upon a pod of 30-38" bass yesterday PM. Didn't care all that much and went looking elsewhere for the green fish. lol
bassballer 10-13-2014, 03:30 PM Went out today from PJ to 2nd beach big goose egg saw a few in newport long enough to see they were ablies Weather report was a bit off as well chatter on the radio was about the same no fish
I think I saw you off NPT. I went inside for tog and Seabass. I wasn't in the mood to keep Getting face washed with water. Sucks I was on a mission for some migrating cow bass.

RickBomba 10-13-2014, 06:54 PM I caught a million baby bones at Wood End on Saturday. Boy was I surprised!
If one of them would have been just like 2 pounds bigger, it would have been pretty fun.
I've never seen so many in one place....crazy, then they were gone!
BatesBCheatin 10-16-2014, 02:30 PM The surf forecast did not look good for the next few days so I take a trip down to Rhody y'day for first light. I decide I better fish for some bass before hitting up the Albies.
I'm on the beach and after I catch a few 30" bass and 5-10lb blues on top I notice some small baitfish being harassed in the wash. I keep an eye on that for awhile and decide to throw some light stuff in the vicinity. I grab my Albie rod and this is the result. 2nd cast. Where I usually get them has been rocky shore, so it was nice to let them run a bit on an open beach. After being unable to catch them in August I can't get away from these things now! :hihi:
The surf forecast does not look good: 6-8 foot waves til Sunday due to the hurricane which certainly means dirty water and weeds for a bit after that.
are they still around down there?
BatesBCheatin 10-20-2014, 05:20 PM I won't know til tomorrow. maybe somebody else does.

ThrowingTimber 10-21-2014, 08:48 AM Ok, will do going forward. Lets just tell ourselves they were sub-legal stripers and we'll all sleep better because they were going off from 1 to sundown :hidin:

agreed i am off the next 2 days snotty weather but its worth a cast or 2.
BatesBCheatin 10-22-2014, 10:28 AM Only found little striped fish yesterday. No green fish seen despite lots of their favorite bait around and many fly rodders. If it's not over now, it will be very soon with this weather I suspect - at least for us shore guys. :(
Two positives: I was unable to hit my 'go to' spot yesterday and the water was very cloudy so the conditions were far from optimal.
BatesBCheatin 10-27-2014, 02:13 PM You boat people might be able to find a few pods around in Rhody. For me, it's been impossible to get through all the short bass that are around. I'm not about to catch and release 50 shorts for the hopes of one Albie.
A couple days ago green fish were seen breaching way too far out. Probably caught my last funny this year. :bc: It was a good run though. Hope they come back around again in about 300 days. Have to admit it was nice fishing in the day light for a change.
Time to focus on the large striped fish I think.
