They look like the stump of a small tree (2-3") that was cut off flush with the top soil. They are black on the out side and white when you break them open. They have a mass below them about 2" deep and spread out under the grass about 6". ill post some pics later.

Any ideas as to wtf these are. some are in shade wet areas and some are in dry hot areas.

sounds like Fungi..........

these are the temperatures that makes them appear
between 55 and 65 degrees...

make sure they aren't something VALUABLE like
a truffle before you destroy them

i think those are $900.00 an Ounce - Just sayin

Here are some pics. Funny you say that Raven. I recently had a huge mushroom appear almost over night over an old oak tree stump that I ground an covered with top soil and grass seed. Like a typical guy, I thought it would be a great idea to run it over with the riding mower. I later showed my step father a pic and he told me it was a $200 mushroom. Chicken of the woods. He's been a chef all his life and said he's never seen a chicken that big.

I cant really tell from the picture and I would not recommend eating a mushroom unless you had positive ID from someone that knows but if it is in fact a hen of the woods they ARE delicious (well, if you like mushrooms) and very delicate prepare them simply such as frying in butter or in a creamy sauce with pasta as their great but delicate flavor can be overwhelmed with spices easily. It would be a shame to not enjoy their unique flavor.

These definitely aren't hens but one I stupidly ran over with the riding mower was for sure.

Maybe someone dropped a deuce on your lawn after scarfing down a bag of marshmallows?
