View Full Version : Boat Detailing
bloocrab 10-31-2014, 10:08 PM Any suggestions on a Boat Detailer?
Someone to buff out scouring pad scratches, restore gel coat finish, etc...
On my last winter clean up, in trying to get the boat as cleaned up as possible, I took a green scouring pad to those hard to clean spots. Shortly afterwards, I realized I damaged the gel-coat in numerous areas. In not trying to make it worse myself (as I have no experience in this yet)...are there any reputable places that offer this service, that anyone recommends?
Thanks in advance ~

JFigliuolo 11-06-2014, 02:03 PM Harbor freight rotary polishers. Some rubbing compound. It IS time consuming, but wicked easy. Gel is tough to F up. unlike autopaint which is more delicate. There is a really good read over on T H T. I NEVER did any more than wax my car maybe 5 times in my life. I had no problem bringing back the GC on my boat.
SolOmoN 11-10-2014, 07:47 PM FLAME ALERT!!!!!!!
Update: Needless to say I am glad someone talked me off the ledge this afternoon because I would of been staying at the Tiverton Hotel and bars.
so it went like this.... I was looking for someone to do a detail and buff on my new whip. Just bought it... its already winterized so all that I wanted to do was address the hull and get a decent cover for it(that's all together another flame rant) so I could be done with it until the spring. I found this cat on cl... I know.... I know.... and checked his website out.... ----------->http://www.newenglandpaintanddetail.com/index.html it looked pretty good, good deal to... so I figured for $240 it will be a done deal(boat is a 2007 2360 cc Sailfish/F250) I call the guy ... speak with him and he sounds knowledgeable and to expedite things I offer to bring the boat to him and have him do it at his place. That was Tuesday last week. Wed, Thursday rain.... #^&#^&#^&#^&ty weather... Friday I ask if If it will be done in the afternoon? um... yea... cold .... products dont work - cure - ect... um .... you get the drift . So I say no problem Im fishing Saturday so how about I figure to pick it up Sunday am at like ten? I get this phone call asking if he could have an extra day.... um.... ok whatever... but I tell him I want it back by Monday. 2pm. Ok so that's where we left it. Today I get a call at 9 in the am.... he asks me to make it for 4... Im like what.... are you fishing my boat or something???? whats the deal? he was like he had an app at 2 so 4 would work better for him... Ok this is getting old. So 4 it is . Done.
NOT. Driving to his place he texted me saying 415 430.... db, so I kept driving I had an errand to do so no problem. I get to the house and it is 345... great I can look her over and see..... WTF!!!!! this kid ..... seems like he went through the boat... played with all the electronics ...opened this and that, just a #^&#^&#^&#^& show. Besides the fact that he didn't do what I had asked him to do.... try and remove the old names that were left in the gel coat from the stickers... I got this song and dance.... "no problem.... I can do that.... but it may be a little extra$$$$ " Ok how much total? $300. So I figured that would be fine.
This kid did #^&#^&#^&#^&. he got the port side done compound and wax.... real #^&#^&#^&#^&ty job and no name removal. Didn't do the transom. He managed to do 1/3 of the stbd side from the stern going forward. That's all. By now its 405. I get a text saying its going to be 445. Nope. Bull#^&#^&#^&#^&. I text him back saying that he needs to be here now. I try and call him - no answer... now I'm livid, plus the fact he has a lock on my hitch so I can't even grab it(I didn't pay him yet) so maybe that's a good thing but I'm still jerked.... daylight is fading and all I can think is this db is going to try and tell me that its all done and give me $300. Ya right.... sooooooo I call the cops. Im glad I did I need to get back to work this week and I don't need any grief in my life. The cops came and we sorted it out. I paid him waaaaaaay($150) to much but he did some work on the boat #^&#^&#^&#^&ty as it may have been.
Long story, DON'T USE NEW ENGLAND PAINT AND DETAIL. This kid is whats wrong with this country. There is no excuse why this job was not completed. He had plenty of good days in the week (ya WEEK)to get this done and did not service a customer who was more than accommodating.
Beware.

OUCh, sorry to hear that....

Joe, I bought the same polisher. Works like a charm.
fish4striper 11-16-2014, 12:49 PM Like Joe said , It is a lot of work, why its not cheap if you hire someone. If you find cheap, you get what you just had.
Onestoogedetailing.com does a great job from what I've heard. Mark is a great guy. He travels to the boat.
