Interesting points brought up recently on the Classifieds I want some discussion on.

I see these rules on other non-fishing sites and it might be good to add them here:

If you list some gear you must use a photo
You must list an asking price.

Of course - tips are always appreciated if you sell something. If you participate in Too Cold To Fish that certainly covers your tips ;)

Thank you,

John

Definitely must list a price. No auctions either unless it is a benefit.

I don't know if including a photo is that important. People won't sell much unless they do and I'd wager the majority of transactions are face to face so if something's not described properly you have an out.

Just my 2 cents

Photo ~ untill the mobil upgrade is done i would leave this out of it most of us use our cells then need to transfer to a pc then upload.... f that.....

Asking price although i agree there is some validity to this you may need to granulate your exceptions. Ie. Free or trade etc.

Other than that i like the classifieds here its not all hig and tug like some other sites which is annoying. If it aibt broke or if no one get their panties in a bunch leave it be.

Good points - both of you - why I am asking ;)

I also like the idea of 1) Keep all conversation in the forum until it is "sold"
2) If you list an item(s) it should only be listed here.

sometime you see an item with no responses yet and its sold. How? Was the sale made in a P M? Was it sold elsewhere?

Just my thoughts.

The rules and attitude on the other site are what have prevented me from being more of a participant there.
The volume over there is part of what necessitates the rules, since many are there strictly for the classifieds.
Common courtesy and respect should be enough to moderate such a forum to function properly. Sadly, I don't think this is the direction our society, in general, is headed. We, for the most part, self regulate these boards, as it is OUR community.
The S-B classifieds board is lacking in volume, compared to what I would like to see. More listings would result in more traffic and views. That is a double edged sword as it may attract an unwanted demographic that really doesn't share an interest in the basis of this community, ie. striper fishing.
So a few guidelines might be worth posting. Price, how to legitimize an offer to buy, whether to allow listing elsewhere (I am against making it an exclusive listing) I just don't want to see the need for a classifieds gestapo to impose said rules.....

I'm for price and location (either in the seller's signature or in the listing). Photo would be nice and probably will be necessary to make most sales, but that can be added later I suppose. I prefer to make a listing as complete as possible... but going back and adding stuff does bump the thread up....:-)

Yeh - not looking to go nuts on it - main thinking is:
price

Biggest thing is the price

I feel that the "make an offer" option just results in the seller being low balled. If youre selling something, price the item on what youre looking to get for it.

Thats it, i dont think anything else needs to be addressed within the bst.

when i browse Craig's List for example whether it's free or for CASH
i won't even consider an Item without a photo....

that being said .... John is there a way to have an S-B chat link
to send an "included" photo to a chat posting board of some kind
that generates an SB ADDY for it ?
similar to how you can get a direct link
to a photo-bucket picture?

I say price, photos are nice and if one needs to be added i am sure a potential buyer will request one. Listing it elsewhere is not a big deal.

Make offer is OK AFTER a price. 20 Rod $100/BRO is fine. Rod with no price, make offer is too ambiguous methinks.

No chat system / email system - I don't want MORE non-paying / barely-paying work to do ;)

I feel like leaving out a price or photo just ends up resulting in your item never selling, so you learn from it and include them next time. It regulates itself.
I cant stand the number if rules in the other site! So much damn rules and regulations!

How many of you remember the movie " escape from alcatraz", where "butts" was trying to talk to his wife through the glass in prison? He couldnt say two damn words without the guard telling him he's breaking prison rules!
Thats how it feels on the other site, and the main reason why i stay here!

do what you gotta do, i just feel that the guys on sb regulated themselves. We dont get 20 page threads here fighting about nonsense, due to the people on here

Not trying to "rule anyone to death" just trying to get the bst sellers to list a price for their item/s. Thats it thats all.

I agree thats a good idea.

Actually, i always thought that listing a price is common sense, but i guess not!

I agree with listing a price and a photo helps a lot

Rules are for suckers and people who can't behave themselves

Devils Advocate time.

So I have an item and I Google the sheet out of it and can find any info on it and I feel it has some value. Based upon comments i should just toss it up on Ebay instead of giving some folks here a chance to get a fair shot at it or i could do the leg work of posting it in Scuppers and the re posting it in the classified.

I am on the fence about the mandatory price if someone posts something with out a price dont offer simple.

One of my pet peeves is someone selling something with no price (at least a starting price) That is after all what the potential buyer wants to know. So I think price and picture are a good starting point but I also don't think it should be mandatory. It just means the person may not sell and as far as I am concerned that's their problem nor the sites. As someone else stated the next time that person will hopefully have learned that they need to put a price if they want to sell.

If you do require price I think price or best offer should be allowed but no auction style unless its in the main forum as a fundraiser type thing.

If you want to talk about pet peeves: DON'T post of people's threads with comments or whatever. The item will sell it self. Who cares if you post - sent you a pm?! STOP POSTING comments period. All you are doing is making people think it has gotten sold, or whatever. Do the seller a favor and leave them along. If you want to send a comment do it in a private message.

PRICE is key. I like it when some guy comes on and posts something then he never checks his messages, OR has the common courtesy to update his post to say it has been sold. :P

MORE information you put, the less foolish questions you will have. We all make mistakes and typos, too. Nazi spelling police will remind you if that is the case!

YMMV - Rant off, LOL.

Scuppers works for no fishing, as does the main page if fishing related. I would prefer to see our Brick & Mortar sponsors get some love in this regard though. :tooth:
