I'm not big on preaching...in fact, I'm the opposite. However, recent events have dictated that I try to get people to realize that life is short and you, yes YOU, might be able to help!

Long story short, a friend and co-worker performed CPR on a 42 year old man about 2 weeks ago and saved his life. He now has a pacemaker and is forced to retire (police officer) because he won't be able to work any longer.

Now, about 2 weeks later, this same friend almost lost HIS wife! She is a nurse, 29 years old and pretty fit. While at work (thankfully) she went into full cardiac arrest and "died." They brought her back and now is having a pacemaker put in. She's 29 years old!!

I always carry a CPR mask, gloves and some minor first-aid crap when I'm fishing. I fish with an older crowd and always wondered what would happen if someone went down while fishing the Canal.

Get yourself into a class. It's not that long or expensive. You might be able to save someone you know, love or just encounter!

Just an unreal chain of events this past month with this poor guy. Here he is, getting awards and accolades for saving a life and now has this thrust upon him, and her, at 29 years old!

Sorry..thought I'd pass this along. All too often, we're far away from EMS. Perhaps you might be able to be "that person" that saves a life!

Today breathing into one's mouth is not required anymore...they say just do the pressure pulses on the chest....make sure the mouth is clear....I have given the hemlich to several people once a long time ago at the Hill Top Restaurant...:)

Yes chest compressions are good enough. but keep in mind that if true medical support is more than 5 minutes out, you need to do rescue breathing also.

If you can't bring yourself to do rescue breathing then chest compressions will do as long as EMS help arrives in six minutes or less. But that is not optimal. Thirty compressions and two breaths, should be the minimum. If you've never had a class then any cpr you do is helpful.

Recruit help too if there are others around, doing the compressions gets very tiring, very fast.

I get certified for CPR-Chokesave about every other year.

Got the full monty with defib training back in 2011, as well.

Even took the infant class at one point.

I took over compressions once at a restaurant. Everybody should take the class at least once. You just never know.

Good buddy up in NH dropped while shopping with wife! Two store employees came to rescue, he was a goner, they had been trained thru the store, Defibrillator and all. They got him back and a week later got a triple bypass, now chasing wife around the house... LOL

I'm certified through work. Such a good thing to know.

I get trained in CPR and restraints every few years. I can bring you back, and tie you in a knot at the same time! No joke though get trained. You never know when you could be the one who could make a huge difference in a family's lives. I can be thankful that I have had to utilize my restraint training only (about 2 million times)

They're already starting to "preach" the "Hands-only CPR." I heard rumors that procedures will probably change in October after their American Heart meeting.
