With all of what's going on and, since I am 67 years old, I am seriously rethinking the whole fishing thing.
So $25K in a boat. Another $10 to $15K in equipment. Couple of grand for a slip, gas eels, etc.

Hell, I could belong to a pretty nice golf course for quite a few years and not be as aggravated as I have been lately with the numb nuts running the fisheries.

Hmmmmmm....

I fish less and golf more, I too have a little less desire to haul out of bed at 3am to get to the ramp so I'm taking my first cast as the sun rises, my priorities are definitely changing. I can certainly see me selling the boat in a couple years to work on getting into a single handicap and putting that fishing money towards some rounds south or out west in the middle of this crap called winter.

That's funny I was thinking the same thing. Even played some golf this winter. But you know you really cant beat the bay or BI fishing with friends, having laughs. Plus the feeling that your are in tune with nature. That the forecast matters, that the tide and current matter, that cloud formations matter. You know things that not everyone knows, done things that few do, seen things that not many have seen. For those reasons I would rather have a pole in my hand than a club.

I would build a miniature golf course with a fishing theme of the popular fishing locations which are no longer have bass. The last hole would be a replica of a charter boat where customers can take their best shot at a bull's eye to sink it. ☺

Mike,s photo just sealed any doubt about fishing ;;;;;;;;;;;;;; as we all know ........we like to catch fish , but we LOVE to go fishing .................... I saw it coming 6 years ago ..........so I had a choice keep fishing for stripers & catch less & less or change habits & species .......... I went for the 2nd ........is it striper fishing [NO} but with the right gear there are challanges in catching all species of fish & in their own way fun .................................. the last time the striper stocked crashed > we switched to straight freshwater & had a ball ........ we came back when the bass came back ...............I doubt I,ll be around for the bass to come back ???? this time :sled:

Those pictures Mike put up are AWESOME and those of us with boats probably take it for granted since thats a regular occurence for us.
For me, being out in the middle of the night, pitch dark, no one around, peace & quiet........ is just as awesome.

Hey guys, Nice pics by the way. Don't post here so much but like checking in. Fishing, guys at work think I'm 24/7 and I tell them you don't know some of the guys that I know. I hate to admit it but I guess I'm a fair weather fisherman. I like to enjoy myself. Like is said the "catching" is kind of secondary, Most of the time. I'm not one for fishing all night even though that is the best time. It just messes up my internal clock but I will get up at 0200 or earlier to drive to the Canal for the sunrise.

The best thing I have going is my work hours, Sun - Tue/Wed 12 hr shifts I'm up at 0345 and get home at 1915. So I have weekdays to fish, Sat. is the day to do chores and get ready for the work week. Great to fish weekdays, lot less "activity" on the water, oh and less traffic.

Well just my thoughts. Thanks for listening, Scott

I'm with MakoMike on the golf thing- can't get next to a game where I get to hit the ball but then have to chase after it....

and if you're the kind of guy that wants to sell everything because you can no longer catch 30-50 bass a day-maiming at least a third of them- and fishing just sucks because of it; well, see ya around, have fun trickin' out the cart....(I know this ain't you piemma)......

The photos say it all for a reason to fish, there is nothing like the outdoors to experience and we need to protect it

Me, I'll spend more time in the sweetwater, there is a real thrill to tricking a 3 lb brown with a size 18 blue wing olive; to pulling a largemouth from under a lilly pad with a deer hair popper; getting smallies to hit a stripped leach; taking a kid out for bluegills and perch.

And I'll still spend days and nights out on a rock, getting the s**t knocked out of me by the surf, because it's fishing.

Fix the bait, Sink the Factory Ships.

piemma
03-05-2015, 08:58 AM
You guys who know me well, know I fish and have fished for 50 years for the experience not for the fish. hell, I caught over 200, 34" and up stripers last year and killed 2.
I love my boat, being out for sunrise or in the middle of the night. I love the surf and being one with the waves.
What has me totally frustrated is the BS politics that are going on. I thought at least the State of Rhode Island would realize the importance of conservation of the species. But no, they go and vote for 2 fish per angle, captain and mate on the charters.
What these so called fisheries management people are thinking escapes me.:bs:

I spend the first hour chasing bass, then it's black sea bass, tog or fluke; that way I'm at least bringing home something tasty to eat. Last year not one keeper, because of so few bass around my usual milk run in that first hour, but I'm still eating lots of tasty treats.

I used to play to a 3 hdcp. Trust me golf is infinitely more frustrating. The better you get at it, the more you need to play and unlike fishing it really isn't like riding a bike. Yo start back up in April shoot crap numbers until mid June then get back to form mid July you get a case of shanks and fight to score so you can maintain a hdcp. Then the end of August it comes back you play great for a month or so then Blah blah you get the point

I feel your pain on the fading passion paul
My world and mind is dominated by striped bass catching, not fishing for, but catching. I have tried every other kind of fishing in the hopes it would make me more open minded, but it has done the opposite. I still only wanna catch striped bass. And big ones at that
As my family has grown, poverty has sunk in, and responsibiliteis changed, i have mentally anguished on being able to fish like i used to where i had the time and money to go and fish where i had to go when i had to go in order to catch big fish. I have been in agony for several years now and have put off the shoulder rebuild for fear of missing not being able to be out there catching big fish when other people are. But as i have seen the fishing in the buzzards bay / se mass plummet over the past 2 seasons my hope is fading.
I have now mentally prepared myself to forego hockey and fishing for a year in order to not live in agony. I will still struggle as my friends call me with reports, but the passion will be on ice
I will never ever change to golf. Did it quite a bit in college and that is all i have to suffer listening about in every hockey locker room but i pationately detest golf more than my passion for striped bass fishing
Probably my biggest influence into being able to tame my passion and mentally prepare myself is to think of back beach and how little he fishes now and doesnt mind it at all. If he can do it so can i. And he doesnt drink
Hopefully there will still be fish left in 2 years when i get to fish again. If not my wife says we r definately moving to a warmer climate preferably hawaii.....

yeah redlite - or go down south and get after redfish - that seems like a great fishery that has been managed well.

for me, I know it's not going to be what it used to be, but getting out there and catching one here and there will honestly be enough for me into the near future but I can see it reducing my time on the water if the fishing sucks.

Paul,

1. You dont drink enough to golf, that's just nonsense.

2. Like others suggested there's literally TONS of other species out there that can be targeted in our waters. Talk to Buzzy he's super friendly and knows his chit.

Quitting because of junk science and bs politics makes it seem as if you've had your head in the sand for a REAL long time. The junk science and the BS politics has been around forever!

Nothing is what it used to be. I remember being 6-7 and fishing out by the clam bake club with my uncle john and my father and there would be thick schools of herring and even flying fish around at times. Dont see that now, no sense in pouting over it.

You could always take up fishing on the golf course ... for most courses, there are tons of lakes and ponds with decent largemouth ... have to fish early or late though to avoid getting run over by other golfers ... or you can fish some of the South Florida courses that border saltwater ... when I lived down there we would sneak on to a few courses to target snook and baby tarpon that happened to live in the waters of a few courses ... a few others had various freshwater species above and beyond largemouth that were fun.

OK, I get it. I'll try fishing for scup and sea bass and fluke. I have been too focused on stripers as Clammer, Nebe and Bryan said.
I'm gonna golf a bit more also. My wife is a greens keeper at Crystal Lake Golf CC so I can play for free. I use to play a lot when I was young and still hit the ball fairly well. I'll get my short game in shape and have some fun.

As Vic, said, I don't drink enough to golf so maybe I can start drinking more too. ;)

I picked up golf one season because we had so many days of bad weather. My buddies and I would keep the golf clubs in the truck tow the boat down to the ocean . If it was too rough we would go play golf.

After last May and June's stellar striper fishing, I left them alone and targeted skate, scup, searobins and choggies. I had a great season, and got to sleep at night. :)

You had an epic run, Mike. But you'll be back when it's time and you'll start another one in some capacity.

I just read that this year's Iditarod has to be relocated further north due to a lack of snow over the usual course.

Food for thought. A long time way back guys like you n me just enjoyed striper fishing. Bob Pond was real and always around. We had fun and did what needed to be done to protect the fish. So what has changed so we now just don't give a damn. The fish need our help.So we need to do what needs to be done. I kept 2 fish last yr. One hooked me the other was gut hooked. I CAUGHT A LOT OF FISH and released them. Lets not forget. . WE ALL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO. Ron

I understand your view. I am a little younger (58) and it is very easy to get upset at the current inshore fishing situation having seen what it was like when you were a kid. And Golf is a great game. There is a lot of satisfaction and fun with golf but it also has its share of frustration. My advice is to mix it up. Do a little of each. Cherry pick the your inshore fishing and get hooked up with others that can take you offshore a couple times a season, and play golf on the other days. You just need to do something slightly new. Doing the same thing year in and year out gets old after while. Whatever you do do not become a charter capt. Making a job out of something you enjoy turns what you love in to something you have to do on days when you would prefer not to do that...just for a few bucks. It generally makes for a big headache. I think the worst charter capt's are the guys who retired and do it part time..it is a loose - loose situation for all.

Don't get so hung up on SB. It's a grand fish but there is a lot more out there than SB.

My inlaw(s) live(d) in a FL golf course senior thing and I tell you they should re-name that place, "Purgatory" it is like Heavens waiting room. I enjoyed the golf when I visited over the years and it is a well manicured beautiful place but I could not live there watching everyone die every day. He just died a few weeks ago and I had to go down for a few days, no golf but I was glad to be home.

So do a little of everything and keep it looow stress, stop reading the newspaper and watching the friggin (bad) news all day. Don't push the hard core days on the water...cherry pick the weekdays when the bite is hot and the weather is great. Anything over 5-10 you should be playing golf and dining out with your wife.

This reminds me of a plumber I saw in Florida... he is a big fisherman and then name of his plumbing company is "Windy day plumbing" , when I saw that I said...that guy has the right idea about work.

All I know is that for the past several years up until last year I have not been able to fish any where near as much as I would like. I started fishing in 1990 from the surf and before I knew it there were years I could count the nights I missed in Sept Oct and Nov on one hand. Had a 24 CC for a few years and did extremely well sold it and went back to the surf but like I said could not fish any where near as much as I wanted. Last season I was able to fish as much as I wanted to and still work, putting in around 100 nights and prob this side of 60 were all nighters. I fell in love with the surf again in so many ways it would take hours to talk about it, fishing alone, with my boys, with friends, every single night when I was about to get started I was enthrawled in the anticipation of what the night would bring, the darkness,he moon, the stars the rain, the wind, the surf, finding a piece of water that looked so promising I would fall getting out to the rock I wanted to get on. Standing on a rock with overhead water in front of you............just a taste of some of it.........how about the planning and getting the up to the minuet conditions to formulate a game plan that made sense and the executing it..............some times with success some times not so much................recharging the batteries and back again to do it one more night...........at 60 not so easy............passionately driven to do it one more night and then again. I am in love with surf fishing once again and I thank God for the gift....................................its always nice to bump into an old or new friend once in a while on the journey too.

I'm kinda right there with ya..... it pisses me off that the #^&#^&#^&#^&!NG guys from ASSMFC can screw this up for someone's(?) benefit for so long and have no accountability. 90% of public opinion took a conservation-oriented position and we still are left wondering what the fate of the fishery will be.... because some non-elected officials feel like they know better the the general population AND THE BEST FISHERY SCIENCE EVE COMPILED

it just pisses me off..............
