View Full Version : Opening day of cod season
buckman 04-16-2015, 07:49 AM Flat ass calm day out there hope you guys are catching.....
Drive by the harbors and all of the charter boats are still up on the hard. Truly a crushing blow to the coastal communities.
Sea Dangles 04-16-2015, 08:31 AM It would be great if the cod can benefit.
buckman 04-16-2015, 08:40 AM It would be great if the cod can benefit.
I truly hope you mean that sarcastically

JohnR 04-16-2015, 01:03 PM I really hate to say it because I really enjoy Cod, but hopefully cod can get a little reprieve based on all the crushing blows to the Codfish community over the years. Sucks but it is not like this has not been an annual brewhaha for the past 2-3 decades.
"Cod is collapsing"
"Not it is not"
"Cod is collapsing"
"Not it is not"
"Cod is collapsing"
"Not it is not"
"Cod has collapsed"
"How did you let that happen?"
MakoMike 04-16-2015, 02:05 PM At least two things I don't understand about the current cod situation:
1 - Why do we still have a season south of the cape?
2- Why are sectors still allowed to fish for and possess cod when recreational fishermen can't?
sad and pathetic is what it is
Captain Jason Colby 04-16-2015, 04:23 PM Don't get me started but I am on one of the advisory councils that got us here (GOM-RAP). What we recommend and vote for means nothing to the government. We are not even allowed to discuss the "real issues", we are told to stick to the (irrelevant) agenda. If we want to deviate from the agenda we have to file a motion to add a item to the next agenda. Tom Depersia has been trying to add an item to the "next" agenda for 16 years!
They (NOAA, NEFMC, GARFO, etc.) reject all we say anyway and then do what they want (that is to give the draggers what they want).
The "fishery management process" is a sham!
I start every meeting I go to by suggesting we remove the draggers from the water and "problems solved". I'm told to shut up every time!

One might think that you would learn by now that your total opposition to the commercial fishery is a recipe for getting you remarks completely ignored. :1poke:

No offense cpt, but if what you are saying is true its time to Learn how to politic better or take this on a public venue and do some rabble rousing, or is it that you would prefer to take the salted ride and say your are part of this?
Really the move is up to you and with no disrespect your comment about is very disappointing...

If you really do begin every meeting with that "suggestion" I would respectfully ask that you remove yourself from whatever advisory board you currently sit on.
If that's the type of representation the recreational and charter fisherman are getting at these meetings, it's no wonder no compromise was achieved and rec anglers are now closed out of a fishery we've enjoyed for hundreds of years.

thefishingfreak 04-17-2015, 06:32 AM The panel he's referring to is the GOM-RAP aka the Gulf of Maine - Recreational Advisory Panel. The voice of the recreational fisherman.

That is the most impactful method, right?

:claps:
Captain Jason Colby 04-17-2015, 07:28 AM For what it's worth, Mako Mike (on the same RAP panel) gives "every compromise and concession" to the draggers and commercial interests. I often wonder who's side he is on. He was on the panel far longer than me and like in politics, you need to really stir things up when they are badly broken.
I believe on the political side that 100% of the people in government should be removed, there is too much corruption that developes over time. Fishery management is the same and "managers and advisors" end up in bed with those they should oppose and the people they are supposed to represent get the short end of the stick (or in this case the stock).
I only represent recreational angling interests and if Mike doesn't like it that is his issue, I don't see why that would open me to "attacks" from people I try to help. Mike's way has not helped.

Nothing to do with that.
It's just that the recs can't justify targeting ANY cod without killing too many. If we only target haddock then we will kill too many cod (according to their "mad scientist numbers") if we target too many haddock. SO, we spent the last two meetings arguing/discussing how we can catch haddock without killing too many cod.......JC
PRBuzz 04-17-2015, 07:47 AM Is day of cod ban on the NWC, did anyone tell the seals to stop eating them?

I like this...
MAKAI 04-17-2015, 08:33 AM Found a pdf regarding the cod decline in eastern canada.
50 pages later it appears that once the cod were over fished to such a low level that the remaining biomass can't keep up with the grey seal predation. Also applies to hake in their report.
I really really hate those pinniped pussbags !

Actually its the Recreational Advisory committee of the New England Fishery management council.

I'm guessing you are unaware of the fact that the council members (the ones with the real power) can only serve three consecutive terms on the council?
PRBuzz 04-17-2015, 10:03 AM And what is a "term" cause 3 of them is likely long enough to do substanital damage? :)

3 years each term.
Captain Jason Colby 04-17-2015, 11:06 AM 3 years each term.
And then they move to a different council.
MakoMike 04-17-2015, 02:50 PM And then they move to a different council.
As a resident of a state which is represented in the NEFMC they are not eligible to be appointed to any other of the councils.

"Different panel".
How many panels have you been on (as you seem to be well versed in what happens with the ASMFC)?
There is at least one member of our RAP that is "getting paid" (by environmental interests) to be on as many panels and to influence as many outcomes as he possibly can. I often wonder who on our panel is getting paid by commercial lobbiests......JC

In addition to the NEFMC's RAP I am an advisor to both the ASMFC and the MAFMC for summer flounder, black sea bass and scup.
As you well know, and have pointed out in your original post in this thread, advisors are not always listened to by the bodies they advise.
