5.7.2015 Cape Cod Bay was loaded with Right whales, fin whales and Humpback whales...dozens of them! From feeding right whales (remember closest distance approach permitted 500yds, Federal and big fines) and sleeping humpback whales are tough too spot. Boston Globe reported over 50 right whales. Our first right whale siting was immediately upon leaving the Green Harbor lauch. Numerous humpbacks out near Fishing Ledge.

Underwater visibility was limited by the amount of algae/plantkon/etc in the water but several times we were able to attract several humpback whales out of their curiosty to come right besides the boat, engine OFF, yes we were like sitting ducks at the mercy of these whales. Filmed using a GoPro Hero 2 on a hand-held pole mount. Onboard were 2 whale specialist/biologist whose primary mandate is to ID and study whales affiliated with the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance, Carol "Krill" Carson and Starr Howell.

how do you determine your 500 yards safe distance?

Best guess but more importantly have spotters and go slow in the area. With so many whales you will get "closer than 500yds" to a couple, no avoiding. If you didn't you would have to shut the entrances to Green Harbor and maybe even Plymouth Harbor.

Buzz ain't kidding...

While zipping back from the Race last summer to Sandwhich harbor...>>full throttle mind you>>.....a big bastard breached right in front of me....did all I could not to piggy-back her and keep myself from going into a full roll-over. Not a laughing matter...
Needless to say...it was a s-l-o-w ride the rest of the way.

Short of not going fast, how do you prepare for something like that? I mean there's really no sign whatsoever if there's any kind of chop to the water....you ain't gonna see her till she breaks the surface....and by then...could be 2-late. Had no safety gear on either....:hang:

With right whales (an endangered species) it is Federal LAW to stay 500yds distant, with humpbacks (not endangered) 100yds is only a recommendation not law!

http://stellwagen.noaa.gov/visit/whalewatching/guidelines.html

We approached to approx 100ft and shut down everything, the curiosity of the whales brought them boatside. We were actually stuck there for 45 min until they cleared far enough away to restart engine and slowly motor out of the area.

Really really neat. Gonna show my 2 year old tomorrow. He knows several types of whales from pictures in books. He will love this.

Was anyone tempted to jump in and take a swim with them? :-)
