View Full Version : Fish talk
stripermaineiac 06-03-2015, 10:20 PM does anyone share fish info on this site anymore or is it just a bitch fest. when i ist joined this site there was loads of sharing an fun things talked about. Now its all about spot burning an people afraid to share due to being hammered about it. we need to remember where we all came from. We weren't born experts. we all started somewhere that another angler showed us the way. Sharing info, ideas, spots, lures an so on is where it's about. Sorry to vent but we need to share to grow. If others didn't share we wouldn't know what we do today. Ron
wdmso 06-04-2015, 04:52 AM I agree on the spot burning issue never really understand how saying the fish are in Narragansett bay is spot burning . I can understand naming shore spots not everyone has a boat but most have a car and 2 feet and thats a game changer .... so to avoid the drama I ask via pm for more detailed information if they are willing to give it thats fine if not thats also fine and I also give back and share my info by PMs with those who have helped me out .. and I had a few help me track down Albies last year which made a fantastic why to close out the year... And reported back on hot lure colors duration of the bite and amount of fish in the area
And I hope to do the same this year from bass to blues to Albies

Well said Ron.... it's a sign of the times I guess...
JohnR 06-04-2015, 06:59 AM I think it all needs to be shared, but spots are best shared between people, in person. I know it is a bit of a third rail but some people just go scanning sites and FB for spots.
But these days - even more so than in the past - nothing is secret
A lot of what we did here has moved on to FB, rather than a model where people would come to one place and discuss in this more centralized space, now more has moved to the decentralized of FB
spinncognito 06-04-2015, 07:17 AM When I joined this site 11 years ago I still had a flip-phone and a pager. These days everyone has a smart-phone and instant access to the WWW and information travels in an instant.
I am all for actual "fish talk", lures, what's working, posting up a pic or two of a decent fish but as far as actually typing into a thread a spot that I fish that thousands of people will see within 3 minutes of me typing it, no thanks. Generalizations, fine but specifics, no.
That is what PM's are for and they do get utilized and I have no problem sharing info that way so long as the person I share it with does not then post it for all to see.
Most hard-core fishermen/surfcasters have taken years to learn their spots and how/when to fish them. Many of these spots are in areas that cannot handle crowds of fishermen and sharing them, even here, would jeopardize everything we have worked so hard to learn.
seadogg 06-04-2015, 10:36 AM I miss seeing pictures, hearing great stories, and feeling a sense of camaraderie. I log onto this site every day in the hopes that I'll see any of those things, and while I still do, it doesn't happen often enough these days. I think a lot of people fear judgement if they kill a fish, say where they were, or share their viewpoints on the current state of the fishery. This site is, or was, about sharing our enjoyment of something we all have in common.

piemma 06-04-2015, 10:44 AM I miss the way it was 30 years ago too. It ain't going back so face the facts. This is the world we live in. I don't post anything specific anymore.
When I started there was no internet or cell phones. We learned by trial and error. There are no secret spots but there are nuances to fishing certain spots. Tide, wind, stage of the moon, lure choice, etc. They are the secrets I hold dearly and I am not giving them up on a website.
As John stated correctly, there are a ton of Jamokes, googans, whatever you want to call them that crawl this site and lots of others just to pick up information.
NOT FROM ME!
Jackbass 06-04-2015, 11:55 AM Unfortunately haven't had anything to talk about too many diapers to hunt the Stripers much these days. I just figure I should hang out with my girls while they still think I am the coolest guy around. Won't be long before I will be the biggest a hole in their eyes for awhile.

BigFish 06-04-2015, 12:24 PM I caught a fish this week! It was fun!:btu:
stripermaineiac 06-04-2015, 04:41 PM just threw this up for food for thought. Sites change but we still need to find a way to teach an not punish the new guys because of the morons. Many become what we don't take the time to teach. Show them the way an most will learn.

nightfighter 06-04-2015, 06:30 PM So what I am getting here is that much of the discussion that once took place here has migrated over to Facebook? I think that sucks. Even if it is a S-B FB page. Not on FB and never will be. No upside to those social media sites for me. Traffic and posts here are down significantly IMO. I would hope to see that traffic return here.
FWIW, I personally have yet to wet a line, so nothing to report. Boat is out front, with the cover still in place.... Maybe this weekend. But most likely my first report will be coming from our Cuttyhunk trip which kicks off one week from today!
thefishingfreak 06-04-2015, 09:54 PM The site has grown into exactly what you've all molded it into.

That's the truth.
There is no more "Fish talk" on here because the catch & release police will bash the heck out of anyone posting a pic of a dead fish. or the spot burn police will pounce on anyone with a location issue. What else is there to talk about?
So indeed, the site has become molded into exactly what the masses, or the most vocal, will allow it to be and anyone with a different view is the black sheep.
There are private boards where killing fish isn't frowned upon SOOOO much, and location is shared openly. that's where all the fish talk is.
and Facebook isn't so bad.
Rockfish9 06-05-2015, 07:00 AM there is an element of truth to every reply here ...some of us long for the old days..and as has been stated ...gone forever... some live in the new days ( social media) for some of us...never gonna happen....in-between are others ( with some of the above mixed in)that found, and enjoy friendships.. and perspectives brought by other anglers wrought from web sites like this one.. that..IMHO is still the most professional... well run site on the net...it's one of the very few I still bother logging on to...
When I started striper fishing in 1972 I had a home made 14' plywood boat that my father and I made.. it was powered by a 15HP '50's vintage Evinrude.. each summer I literally LIVED in that leaky old scow.... If you EVER have a chance to fish with Joe... TAKE IT! The night we fished was far from spectacular as far as the fishing went, but it was a great time. If I ever learn half of what Joe has forgotten I'll be happy.
peterpanwkfd 06-05-2015, 09:48 AM I still like this site. I check it every day to see what you guys have to say. I made the mistake of spot burning in one of my first posts. And I took the lashing on the chin. As a new guy, this site has helped me make less stupid mistakes. I appreciate what all of you have put into this site. There is only so much that you can "talk" about without being able to show the people. So I combine the info I get here with the videos on YouTube and the surfcasters journal mag., to get the full picture. Like; how to fish a bucktail. You can say "bump it into the bottom, short pickup, and reel slowly with small twitches" and the person can kind of imagine. Now, Show the person in a video or in person, and they can grasp the material better.
I guess what I am trying to convey is, we all can only do so much with words. Give yourselves some credit for still being here to answer questions for the new folks. Also, anything fishing on Facebook is a terrible idea. No fishing on FB=no drama.
KISS- Keep it simple stupid.
Cool Beans 06-05-2015, 10:29 AM That's the truth.

100% agree with you.. There has been far more crying and tree-hugging on here than I can stand most days. It's like that cool bar that you used to hang out with the guys and tell dirty jokes at, nowadays you rarely go there because you can't tell your jokes without "offending" someone.
Having to worry about posting pictures, that may show a hint of shoreline, or a dead fish keeps some from posting at all. I get SO FREAKING BORED of only reading about DEM busts and how stories of "self proclaimed" greatness for rarely or never killing a fish.
All fishermen KILL fish. Some of us eat them instead of releasing them to die anyway......
Rockport24 06-05-2015, 12:19 PM I know this site isn't what it used to be, but I still like you guys so I still come on.
We had to be very clear over on the kayak site about spot burning for exactly the reason many of you have mentioned - it doesn't stop people from posting reports though. I've received a lot of help from people on this board and many of those same people are still here, you just need to ask and they are still willing to help.
Even though I am on facebook, I agree with Ross that it sucks if folks are posting things there and not here. You could argue its even more public there! For those of you who do that, try to post things here as well. Actually, I will start to take my own advice on this as I am guilty of this as well.
BigFish 06-05-2015, 01:02 PM I used to love posting pics......people bitch about "dead fish pics" and "spot burning"........so I don't bother really. On Facebook if someone doesn't like it its hasta luego buddy they are gone!!! (Sorry my spanish spelling no so good!) LOL!:hihi:

Facebook is far from public. You pick your friends in the begining and if they say something stupid, or something you don't like. Seeya!:wavey:. Never to be heard from again.

big jay 06-05-2015, 08:51 PM I caught a #^&#^&#^&#^& load of bass today.
A put couple pics on FB - and I probably spot burned because I was tired and didn't blur out the background. And I don't care, because it's not a secret and 50 boats are going to be there tomorrow.
Btw - there were 100 cars at the canal this morning. I bet there were fish there too.

hardcore from shore 06-06-2015, 07:54 AM Real fish talk question, in the spirit of what forum and title state. When you fish and start with your usual starting lure or go to lure how long do you stay confident in it and keep throwing when the others near you are catching on a different color or different style lure? How confident or flexible are you? Why?
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
ivanputski 06-06-2015, 02:17 PM If others near me are catching on another plug and am not, i become flexible quite quickly... But if im alone and im not catching, i stick to what i think is the best method for the given situation and keep at it.
On a side note, if im fiahing with a partner, i often like fishing something totally different them them just to see what the fish want.

Me neither. I thought the N/NW wind would lay it down, but there were some big sets rolling through. Took me about 3 hrs down on the drop to get out to my rock. Normally takes an hr.
I'll take the surf any day as it was manageable, but I didn't expect that bright of a moon. Was hoping for the overcast changing to partly cloudy conditions that were originally forecast...

I had the clouds to the west, but lots of mungy-red weed (LOTS); found some schoolies tucked around the corner a few hundred yards, but the front was quiet
Water was very clean in all 3 spots I went to.

Exactly.
I was given a live tutorial trip at an inlet in my neck of the woods and even with extremely well directed lessons I still get the skunk.
Can't be a secret spot on a beach or bay if you already see old footprints and/or tire tracks!
When I started striper fishing in 1972 I had a home made 14' plywood boat that my father and I made.. it was powered by a 15HP '50's vintage Evinrude.. each summer I literally LIVED in that leaky old scow.... I trapped eels and tommy cods ..dug worms and clams and caught and sold schoolies ... I watched every move the "old timers" made.. as I ogled their catches, as tight lipped as they were.. they noticed the tenacity that I used to approach fishing... and when they figured I had struggled enough.. they'd give me just enough information to boost my determination.. there were many, many hard lessons.... all I ever wanted was to win their admiration and be like them...they are all gone now.. .. it is my turn to pass the torch...every season, I make it a point to take some one different fishing...it's the only way I know to repay them
I also do at least one seminar ( which I do not charge for)we can't take what we have learned with us... there's no luggage racks on a hearse...
I could listen to those stories all day Rock, reminds how blessed I was having a very similar mentor most of my life when it comes to fishing. The goal for me is to get one day where it was like the famed "old days" you guys always speak of.
The passing on of fishing knowledge is strange in that a lot of it is kept secret for many years unless you do espionage on other fisherman or are lucky enough to be the chosen one to have that knowledge passed on to. But nothing will substitute that hard work and refined technique.
*******
You can "burn" a spot but you still need to be able to catch the fish just like the person who told you where and when!
Of course if you go by reports, we should all be bailing fish even using a carrot on a hook...though nothing is funnier than seeing the crowds who live by those fish reports getting bummed out and cry online to the end of time...
