The explosion could be caused by a fuel spill that washed upon the jetty rocks from the boat that caught fire in Galilee.

IF* that really was a bomb, I wonder if it is related to the fire along the docks that destroyed a few fishing boats the other night.

could be a dead seal or something biological (natural)
buried after a storm creating a gas bubble that finally popped.
very strange either way....

this is too messed up for me....WTF is this world coming to

The explosion could have been caused by a buildup of methane gases from a septic system that is inadequately vented.

Hahaha - that thought crossed the mind too. Top 5% funny video on what could possibly go wrong.

As for Salty Brine - I cannot imagine many scenarios that would not leave a trace of some type.

Exploding dead animals do not have the power to launch old ladies through the air. I have experience "exploding" dead bloated cows as a kid, I tricked my little brother to get near a hugely bloated dead cow. Once he was close enough I "speared" it with a sharp stick, and it sort of exploded. it was mostly a HUGE amount of stinky air and juicy stuff that splattered all over my brother. It was far from enough power to do any physical damage to anyone.

I think it is more likely the airbag scenario or a hoax. Or perhaps ole Phil Harris was right about the crab fart bubbles, except in this case it was lobster fart bubbles that collected under the sand, just waiting for some elderly lady to attack.

Ok... Here's the best theory i can come up with:

2 seasons ago they shipped in newly demolished boulders to rebuild the short wall jetty. To creates the boulders, they drill a series of holes into massive rock and drop explosives into them.
My best guess is a left over, undetonated explosive sitting in a drill hole of one of the boulders.

Zero traces of explosive material was found by bomb sniffing dogs and lab testing.

I still think that lady stuffed 10 psi of methane into the sand from farting and lit a match..... Boooooom

Natural gases built up under the sand? Like the small gas bubbles that can build in aquarium sand only on a larger scale? I think I saw something about a lake somewhere that had this mysterious underwater "explosions"....I will have to see if I can find it....

Edit: found what I had read about but this is different. This was more gases in the water. Not necessarily the sand or lake bottom like I was thinking....http://www.usgs.gov/blogs/features/usgs_top_story/exploding-lakes-in-west-africa/

Secondly.... The discovery channel or the history channel will definitely showcase this event and come up with reasons why this is one of the greatest scientific mysteries of all times.

Nope. Rhode Island does not get that kind of coverage. Think about the 1960s nuclear accident in RI.

Paul, it's all psychological. You yell decomposing methane gas deposit , everybody says, "Huh? What?" You yell "terrorists", we've got a panic on our hands on the Fourth of July.

John, I'm pissing my pants at my desk I'm laughing so hard. Was the mayor wearing a sports coat that had 30 pastel-colored stripes?

God knows everytime I hear the word barracuda, my exact response is "Huh? What?" Especially if I was on an island somewhere in New York, I think a barracude elicits more of a response than "Huh? What?"

I won't laugh this hard again for weeks.

DEM: 'Hydrogen combustion' probable cause of beach explosion

PROVIDENCE - The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced on Friday a probable cause of the recent explosion at Salty Brine Beach in Narragansett.

Officials noted that the culprit was “the combustion of a build-up of hydrogen gas in the beach sand, due to the corrosion of an abandoned copper cable that was previously used by the United States Coast Guard."

As believable as blaming the tooth fairy:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Reuters) - An explosion that injured a woman at a Rhode Island beach earlier this month was a likely the result of a build up of hydrogen gas from a forgotten power cable buried beneath the sand, state officials said on Friday.

The copper cable had originally been laid by the U.S. Coast Guard to power equipment, but had long since been abandoned, officials said, adding that there appeared to be no further danger to summer sunbathers.

"I would take my kids there," said Arthur Spivack, an oceanographer at the University Rhode Island, who helped conduct the review.

The July 11 beach explosion tossed Kathleen Danise, 60, of Waterbury, Connecticut, 10 feet into the air. She suffered two cracked ribs, a concussion, bruises and scratches and was briefly hospitalized.

Police immediately evacuated the beach, but crowds were allowed to return the next day.

A team including state police, the state fire marshal's office, the state Department of Environmental Management, and university oceanographers probed the site for almost two weeks, digging in the sand and testing samples.

That's good detective work by URI. You don't think about hydrogen being given off in the corrosion process because it happens so slowly. But copper in a corrosive marine environment turning into copper oxide gives off hydrogen. (Cu + H2O = CuO +H2). In this case with a conductive and corrosive material like copper which is encased in a rubber jacketed cable, you have a place for the hydrogen to accumulate. By bad luck some hydrogen must have been weeping out a hole or the end of the cable and the gas met a cigarette. KABOOM.

Hydrogen accumulation is serious business in the submarine world and you have atmospheric control equipment specifically to get rid of it.

I suspect they were very aware it most likely was the cable early on soon after they found it, but just wanted to make sure they had all there info complete before they came out publicly which led to a lot of speculation.
