when after 45 minutes or more we decided to break it off in the wee hours aboard the Helen-H back in 2011.

We had thrown on a double hook shark rig and a big azz mackeral to see if we could break up a lull in the late night tuna bite. Niko had to pull with everything he had to break that thick mono I had on the rod. I remember someone said, "at least we know you know how to tie a knot". :-) Did you say that Paul?

That was an epic trip. It's still the first fishing report listed on the Helen-H site. Will never forget that trip. What a great time!

I had no intent of breaking him off - that was the sharks idea

more like 90 min fight! That fish made a run there at the end which showed it wasn't in the least bit ready to roll over, more line out than at any time during the fight. Just outgunned on the fish with a Penn 50 :(

I thought those NY guys were getting tired of watching us pass the rod and keeping all the tuna away so we had to break it off. I don't think we could have ever landed it against that gulf stream current anyway. It had a huge advantage over us.

We shoulda dropped a big squid or butterfish down 3 or 4 hundred feet with a lightstick and a couple pounds of lead. Maybe we woulda bagged a sword!

If we caught that thing in the OB monster shark tourney I think I would have been afraid to tail rope and tow it with my 21 Hydra-Sports. It looks like that thing might have been able to win a tug o war with a 175HP Johnson.
