Peter, this is the way to go. Even in the recycling warehouses you likely won't find what you want in the right size.... There are code considerations for set backs from firebox for frieze and legs, as well as projection of shelf.

I am wide open on this project, long term i would love to redo this FP with river rock and add a wood stove.
For now because I am painting the livingroom And we use our other fireplace in the basement I was thinking of just a nice full mantel for looks
