View Full Version : If you had $3,000 for a used 4x4...
addict 07-26-2003, 11:15 PM ...what would/could you get?
Just something to last me for about a year and then sell.
Thanks for any help.
ps: something dependable and durable please. (ok, maybe $3,500)
JohnR 07-26-2003, 11:32 PM Ford Bronco 92+ if you FIND one for that money - I might be selling my old SandSled soon after I determine what work I'm going to do (at least heads) but I'm going to ask around 5K.
F150 4x4 - early 90s
Blazer / Sierra
In a pinch you could get a Jimmy / mini Blazer ONLY with the 4.3 - stay away from 2.8V6 & 4 Cyls...
Surfpirate 07-26-2003, 11:33 PM I bought an old style jeep.
3 years later only oil changes and no monthly payments you can't beat it.
likwid 07-27-2003, 01:11 AM 95 jeep wrangler
148,000 miles later
1 radiator
1 axle joint
1 oil pan gasket
and the usual tires/fluids
can't complain.
beachwalker 07-27-2003, 07:17 AM Toyota or a Nissan.......
Sorry to trump the rice burners but they are very good value because they are cheap to fix and can run forever......
I own a Ford F150, 2002. Bit the bullet........
Good Luck
surf fishing IN R.I. 07-27-2003, 09:00 AM If you look around you can find something i sold this 2 yeares
for $1500 .00 he thought he was getting a good deal he did
not know he had to buy a gas station with it. Take your time
you will find something
striperjerk1 07-27-2003, 09:20 AM if this is for a beach buggy the f-150 or toyota has my vote in p/u.
if you need something with room for other persons the full size blazer or bronco.these have clearance so as not to drag the pumpkins in the sand.plus the f-150s has dual gas tanks on most of em.just my o/p
Mike P 07-27-2003, 09:34 AM For $3500 you should be able to score something like a 92-95 Cherokee. Get the straight 6 only. Small Cherokee, not the Grand.
Second John also on about a 10 year old Bronco. Or a K-5 Blazer with the 350 V-8.
Early to mid-90s F-150, another good choice. The 4.9 liter straight 6 or either V-8.
Stay away from S-10 Blazers and pre-95 Explorers.
while I love my toyota.(but finding one in decent shape for your price range??).....I loved this bugger....i was sad the day my hubby sold it BUT happy not to have to buy gas or have repair bills on it any more! Find one that some sap bought for a few grand.....dumped ten grand into on top of that and has to sacrifice for 3 or four grand (IF he's lucky that is...)
If you're looking for a used 4x4, I can get one at auction for you if you're interested... I deal in the wholesale marketplace...
macojoe 07-27-2003, 12:40 PM Go Chevy!! I like Chevy so I guess I am bias. I have a 1990 Full size Chevy Blazer 4X4 350 TBI, and I love it. I bought mine about 5 years ago for $3000.00 I have rebuilt the tranny and transfer case last winter. Other then that it has been a great truck!! I now have 257,000 miles on it and it runs stronger then ever!! I am starting the rust war but I still have some years left. I tow my camper 10,000# and my boat 3500# with no problems. fuel injection has made the gas station stay away longer then the ones before 1989. I get about 14 city and 19 Highway towing boat about 12 and towing camper about 10. This has been my only car for 4 years now! I use it for everything.
you can get something for 3500.00 easy that will last!! Just look around a bit.
Good Luck!!
blackeye 07-27-2003, 05:51 PM early 90's jeep wrangler-with the 6 cyl. for 3 grand you should be able to get a ready made beach buggy with lots of x-tra's (tops, rims, etc) and all u gotta do is add rocket launchers-plus u can rip out the back seat and install a cooler
Karl F 07-27-2003, 06:06 PM Nice one Jenn, I had an earlier edition that I had for nine years, wish I still had it. Bought it for $3800, sold it for $3500, nine years for $300, not bad!
Addict, if your interested, I know somebody with a 90 Bronco, great beach truck, $2500. It's on the Cape.
BigFish 07-27-2003, 07:02 PM Bought a 1985 Jeep CJ-7 a year ago this past March. $3,500.00. Directly into the shop for a transmission rebuild, complete brakes (all four corners), upper and lower ball joints, oh yeah, a few brake lines, some u-joints, almost $3,000.00 on that trip. Then a few more things...proportioning valve, master cylinder, and booster, $600.00...power steering box, $300.00...a little electrical rewiring (long story there) a total of about $800.00...five new BF Goodrich 32's, $650.00...new softop, new front seats, rear reciever hitch, bikini top, rod holder for front bumper (of course), total for all that cool stuff was about $700.00. :yak: Grand total, (roughly without looking at my receipt folder) $9,500.00.:splat: Was I upset? No not really. The previous owner told me pretty much what the jeep needed..ooops, forgot the front driveshaft, $250.00...total $9,750.00...I looked around at several CJ's as that is what I wanted due to the fact that I have owned several, and I really did'nt mind for the most part, other than a couple of the surprises we had along the way, but all in all, when I drive on the beach with all my gear at the ready and start casting to busting fish, it was all worth the money. :uhuh: Still lots to do. Plans for a fiberglass body, new springs and shocks, and to rebuild the 318 Chrysler that lives under the hood or even add a 300 HP 360. Ask anyone that has seen it, it is a pretty cool rig. Topped it off with a vanity plate..."BIGFSH"...ooops, that was another $75.00...and on and on and on it goes.:ss: Gone Fishing.
JHABS 07-27-2003, 08:20 PM FORD EXPLORER 1994 very good condition.no rot or dents, New brakes ,tires radiator, battery, front u joints. 145,000 miles 7000 miles left on a warranty. $ 4500.00...............
addict 07-27-2003, 09:10 PM Wow, didn't know I'd have so many choices. Thanks to all for the input and offers. I will be looking around and if I'm stumped, I'll be sure to get back on the board with it. Thanks again for the help.
likwid 07-27-2003, 09:21 PM Howabout a military auction/or second hand HMMWV?
That'd be a great beachmobile :D
(Actually been eyeing ex-military for a couple years now looking for the golden egg)

Already looked into it.
-Parts are very expensive for a Hummer I.
-Tread size is illegal on some beaches (too wide).
Otherwise I'd be all over it and accessorize it with an FN-249 5.56 mm squad automatic weapon and a TOW anti-tank missile launcher.
I'd paint it desert camo (brilliant idea for the beach  ) and then christen it the "YAV."
Yuppie Assault Vehicle. Great for plover hunting. :laughs:
A.P.M's
Anti Plover Missles... :laughs:
Iwannakeeper 07-28-2003, 07:59 PM Okay - I am a newbie - but I know the rules about giving out the secret spots.
Where do you find all the laws and rules about when and where you can take vehicles on the beach?
Are there state wide permits, or does every town or county handle it differently?
I got the 4x4. I got the fishing equipement and I am ready to range out and try to break this streak of skunks or smalls.

Plymouth is Residents only, Duxbury, you get the sticker from the harbormaster, I think, the town must have a web page with some info, but I don't have it handy.
Air down, drive slow, and good luck :D

H-1 and HMMWV are not the same vehicles.
But yeah, it'd be handy around the canal with a TOW to "take care" of the idiots who decide its a good idea to troll inside the jetties. Yes.... "take care"
And I've never seen a slantback civilian hummer... :D
"Oh look at that dune, lets go jump it and see if there's any plovers back there! Yes! Hug them! With big treads!"
Iwannakeeper 07-28-2003, 08:27 PM Thanks Karl - the info will be very useful....I will read up and prepare for the fall cow run.

Surplus HMMWV and H-1 share more or less the same parts.
I thought my Disco Series I was bad (imported lousy sub-par British parts) with the $$$, but even the old American General parts made my eyes pop out.
likwid 07-28-2003, 09:26 PM I got a couple private sources of parts if i can find one in good condition :D
shhhhh!
