Putting out feelers for what is still happening and where. You do the same and see if we can put it together before they head offshore of Virginia. We could use some local intel....

Last time it was like this there were fish on the beach all winter into the spring run

1/2/16 UPDATED 9:29 AM The insanity continues. Just weighed in a gorgeous 16 1/4 pound bass on an SP Minnow by Matt Smith of Greenwich, NY from IBSP.

UPDATED 9:12 "Over? Did you over?!! Nothing is over until we decide is!! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor??? Hell no!!" U.S. Senator John Blutarsky

Just weighed in our second keeper bass of 2016, a pretty 12 pounder by Wayne Kopsky of Howell from up in Bayhead on what else.... RUBBER SHAD. Going to have to call Cosmo of Sportfish Products again for more shads. They had a decent bite in Bayhead, and IBSP a few hours ago. Quick hitters. We have salted clams in stock now.

UPDATED 6:10 AM Lot's of action, but about 1/2 mile off the beach. A small, very brief blitz at Gillikins yesterday in the afternoon. They came in, then quickly hauled ass north. A few anglers chased them down and pulled a few out, but short lived. Once again though, there are fish there, there's keepers to be had, and it's January 2nd.

Yesterday's Report: UPDATED 9:46 AM Just had the first keeper bass of the year weighed in, a fat 8 1/4 pounder on rubber shads at the end of the paved road.

UPDATED 8:06 AM Another northwest breeze has the ocean clean and flat. Birds are just sitting up the street from the shop. Decent amount of small bass caught yesterday for the amount of anglers out there. Not many out there today so far. We'll see what this next weekend brings. We will be getting clams and bunker tomorrow.

Store staffer Kevin closed out 2015 with a great fishing trip. He took a boat ride in the afternoon on New Years Eve and found amazing bird action off of Island Beach State Park. He caught bass up to 30 pounds jigging, catching 25 fish. He said, "Great end to 2015! Kept a 33 incher and took advantage of my bonus tag before it expired keeping a 26 incher too. The two fish both had bellies full of SQUID!"

Ryan Kelly and Randy Townsend started the year off right today. They went out and enjoyed a great day of fishing. Ryan reported, "Double digit catches jigging with fish up to 20-lbs!" Here is a photo of Randy with a linesider.

Happy New Year!!!

Sailed today with a full Open Boat and the fishing was awesome! We made the left out of Barnegat Inlet and headed north as we do 95 percent of the time. Found some high circling birds off of Seaside Park, throttled back, and the machine lit up with good readings. We put out a few trolling rods and the umbrella rig went off right away. Double header striper, both under 28". I called the only other boat we saw all morning to give him the update. Andy Wurst on the Blue Juice heard our radio conversation and told me I should consider doubling back south of the inlet to get into birds and heavy striper activity. We left the readings we had even though we just that minute boated two fish, and left fish to go find fish. Usually, a bad move, but not today. Thanks to Andy's call we had fish all day long. One bird pile after another, blackout readings that spanned top to bottom on the machine. We caught them casting shads and trolling umbrella rigs. 26" to 33" fish, we managed 4 nice fish for the cooler, a blast on the 10 pound spinners. When we trolled, two and three fish on one umbrella was the norm. Very few boats. 50 degree water temp still holding strong. These are the first January stripers we ever had. I usually haul out sometime in December. I'm staying in the water to ride this out.

We are sailing Open Boat tomorrow (Sat), Jan 2 and Monday, Jan 4, for stripers. 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. $170 per person. 3 people max. All fish are shared. Sunday is sold out. Call right up until "go time" for a spot.

Gene from Iowa stopped in the shop yesterday evening and shared a report. Gene said, "I stopped in the shop and got some frozen bunker earlier today (yesterday). Another customer was getting bait too. We ended up fishing somewhat close to each other on the mid-island surf. I tried fishing lures but could not get a touch. I managed one 28.5" bass on a frozen bunker chunk. The other angler close by caught a 33" bass. He also lost a much bigger fish in the wash."

Just a heads up reminder...as 2015 comes to a close so does the back bay striper season in New Jersey. Also another reminder from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and its Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW)... effective midnight on January 1, the 2015 Striped Bass Bonus Program will close for individuals and party/charter boats. All bonus permits issued in 2015 will not be valid in 2016. Those anglers and party/charter boat captains who held striped bass bonus permits in 2015 have until January 31, 2016 to submit their season logbooks.

Received: Dec 29, 2015 5:48 PM Subject: Reel Fantasea Fishing Charters - It's far from over!!

The continued mild weather has prolonged our fall migration to not only December but looks like into the 2016 New year!!

Not only bass of trophy size still being caught up the beach in some of our Northern communities but bluefish as well! which tells me we still have some fishing ahead us.

Bass and blues were still blitzing schools of bunker just North of our inlet this week while most of us were enjoying our Holidays with friends and family. Yes!! Sang and drop in LATE December!! Surf fishermen were cashing in on most of the activity due to formidable ocean conditions.

If I were 15 years younger, I would have been in the car last night.... But I am not. Surprised the Conn guys and younger group haven't jumped on the interstate. I have report from someone I trust of 25-40s........today......and that is in #s..... Wish I could just grab my waders, a reel, and a plug bag and head to the airport.....

I feel better waiting until they return. I already put enough pressure on the stocks when they are here. And for the global warming folks I am doing my part by not traveling excessive distances to chase fish that many feel are in danger of going extinct...lol.
Chase something local and don't harm a cow there just because you can. Give it a chance to grow to become your personal best when it returns here after it's migration and spawning.
