Years ago I was scuba diving at the Pendleton wreck and one of the guys got a 17 lb. lobster. It broke his finger. When he was getting it it grabbed a hold of his finger and when he ripped his hand away the claw came with it. Then he was able to get the rest of the lobster. It looked so huge underwater I never would have even tried to grab it.

That's a ballsy move to attempt to snatch that thing.

open claws with a hatchet

they typically get a claw stuck in the opening to the trap. used to commercially fish out of NH with my uncle and every now and then we'd get a big one that tried to reach in and got a claw stuck.

Bull#^&#^&#^&#^&, I used to buy 20+ lobsters fairly often, and they taste just as good as 2 pound selects, if you know how to cook them.

My diver friends get some huge ones, though not sure they've gotten one to rival 30lbs, 20lbs yes.

Most of the really big lobsters are caught by the draggers.

When i had a 14lber i used a hack saw to get in the claws. Broke a cracker on it. Tried a hammer and that didn't work either. It tasted fine, i had to tear the claws and tail off the whole thing wouldn't fit in the pot.

Just for *&^$ and giggles I Googled this:

It takes lobsters an average of 5 to 7 years (depending on the water temperature) to grow to legal size, and they grow more slowly as they get larger. Therefore a lobster that weighs 3 pounds is approximately 15-20 years old, and a 25-pound lobster would be approximately 75-100 years old.

Yes, it was a pretty fun dive. I did it in the late 90's. There was not much left of it, but there was a lot of life down there. It certainly is not like diving in the south, but for up here it was a fun dive. I want to say it was 60-80 ft. of water max.

do not know if they monk fish in Nova Scotia but around here and south of the cape monk fishermen would get lobsta 15-20 pounders.....illegal to bring them to port and I agree with MakoMike just as good as the small ones.... need a hammer or 1 lb sledge .... draggers in Mass can bring in 500 count per trip....Maine draggers can not unload lobsta in Maine but legal to unload here...:)

That's what I also figured. Seems a shame to kill 120 year old animal. You guys know I'm no "bleeding heart" but WTF, 120 years old!!!

Agreed bud besides at that size the a real PIA to cook and shuck.....I'll would rather take a bunch of select size lobsters anytime!
