View Full Version : Bass in Narr Bay this year
piemma 05-24-2016, 07:39 AM Interesting year so far. Plenty of pogies everywhere. Sometimes you have to wait for them to appear and it's been later than usual. Regardless of the tide they are been popping after sunup. In years past, I could get them in the dark if I wanted.
Now, as for the Bass, I haven't seen any evidence of Bass working the pogie schools. I have been getting fish up to 20# but I've also been grinding it out. Fishing old spots I haven't hit in years and finding decent fish...for no apparent reason. I fished 5 spots yesterday morning with live pogies and raised one fish that was too small to take the pogie. The bait has been exceptionally large this year. Consistently a foot long and 1 to 2 pounds each.
It will be interesting to see what the new moon brings. Typically the big girls ride in on the new moon in June.
Rockfish9 05-24-2016, 08:28 AM At least you got pogies...We haven't had them with any consistency in years... I'm sure if they hang around the big girls will find them...and so will you.
I'm splashing my boat tonight... going to set my eel pots tomorrow night and do a little schoolie fishing while they soak... Haddock fishing Saturday .. serious bassing begins next week.

Good luck Joe. Fair winds and following seas.

You're probably right. I haven't seen any squid to speak of but I haven't been south of Mt Hope Bay either. I'm sure there's a ton down around you.
spinncognito 05-24-2016, 10:37 AM Squid have arrived up here on the N. Shore quite early this year (last year it was the end of June) and they are all schools of large squid up to 2ft. Tons of school bass chasing them around
richardj 05-24-2016, 10:41 AM Might have seen you out there Monday morning west side... One trick we use to find out if bass are on the schools is to throw big top water plugs directly into the pogie schools and make a racket. If we attract bass we liveline while picking them off on the surface as well. Looks like a new batch of 36" fish invaded the schools around 11am... full of sea lice and very aggressive. It was very slow prior to that so I hope it continues...

Yup, I was out. 21' Sea Hunt CC. Blue side curtains.
richardj 05-24-2016, 12:31 PM We were trying out all of the pods in that area 19 Northcoast CC White. We circled the entire upper bay and fished every pod only to come back to that area and finally find fish in them.

I had alot of fish follow the lure i was using back to boat last trip out. After it happened a few too many times i tied on a weighted rubber squid jig and started catching right away.

Exactly.
If you're plugging, large white needles have been awesome.Zero complaints the way this season started, can't even imagine how much better it could be if I were a boat owner.
Sea Dangles 05-24-2016, 08:23 PM I have been fishing the bay with some success. The first day it took a while but we ended up in a school of bunker getting inhaled by airborne missiles. The artificial so worked until arms were sore. Next trip arc bait supplied us with fresh fish catchers.
