there was a pretty widely-publicized case of 4 guys who were caught with 38 (mostly short) bass from the Housatonic back in the early season.... made the local news and most of the fishing sites.

well- there case was heard in Derby District Court on Wednesday- and they received a whopping $25 fine for (one of them) fishing without a license.......

yep- a gigantic waste of time. the EPO's should be ballistic with their hard work being dismissed.

25 fine? WTF! Another reason to hate that #^&#^&#^&#^&ty state of CT.

I give credit to the EPO's for still trying knowing that the penalties for major fish and game violations are so trivial.

some background-

these guys were a group of Albanian immigrants who are often seen at the Derby Dam in the spring capitalizing on the easy fishing that can (sometimes) occur there. they were caught about 3 miles downstream after another fisherman noted they were deliberately stashing fish in the rocks and called the EnCon Police. The cops actually used dogs to locate the fish jammed in the bushes

these were the most obvious poachers in the history of mankind....

and still no prosecution by the friggin judge

These are small time poachers........THIS guy is the all time biggest poacher ....over 45 boats and still working at it every day. Six million dollars in overseas accounts...smuggled cash out of the country with help from a former homeland security officer. He should be in jail but he came up with the money for bond, no surprise with all the bags of money he's got from raping the ocean. If the goverment is serious about punishing poachers they should start with this maggot.

They should jail him, his accountant, his distributors, and all of his captains.
His boats should be confiscated and given to honest fishermen who were driven out of business by fisheries rules, fished honestly, couldn't stay above water and had to sell.

I heard rumors that goverment officials have determined that shuting down his operation and confiscating the boats will cause an economic collapse of the New Bedford waterfront businesses that support the fleet....fuel, ice, maintenance etc.

The too big to fail theory?

If we are going to talk about poachers, we should mention a guy who has spent a lifetime and made millions of dollars doing it.
Also that he has been prosecuted and convicted of tax evasion several times during his over 30 years of poaching, smuggling and stealing.

That's why you just give the boats to former boat owners who couldn't make it.

I bet most of his 45 boats were once owned by honest fishermen.

I wonder how much heroin was smugged in from Russian freighters on his boats too?

The only way to stop this poaching is have stiffer fines. I think they should have been fined a thousand dollars each.

They will jail him, but it will be for tax evasion. They have already charged his bookkeeper, too.
