View Full Version : Took the advice
piemma 07-18-2016, 08:06 AM I took the advice of a lot of guys here and deactivated my FB account. To much drama, bs and non-productive rhetoric.
It's been a week and I have come to realize how much time I have been wasting on FB. Being retired, I'd work for awhile, then check FB. Well, I figured out I was wasting about 2 hours a day with the crap. Now I don't miss it at all.

Haha! Gives you more time to dodge moths too
I want to quit work so I can have more time to enjoy life. Maybe I will become an Occupy Mom's Basement like so many of today's unmotivated. Get Off My Lawn! j/k
Sadly my job has me working less hours over 7 days a week and from the morning to the evening with lots of breaks in between.
zimmy 07-18-2016, 09:24 AM I stopped using mine about three years ago except for occasionally checking a brewery listing or something. Never regret it.

No Ronnie, I don't find it so.
JFigliuolo 07-19-2016, 06:53 AM What is this face thing people are always talking about??????
Seriously, never went on. But then again, I hate people anyway.
Steve K 07-19-2016, 07:30 AM FB is a time suck. I don't need to hear people brag. No one posts about not being able to pay their bills or their kid being dumb.
Raider Ronnie 07-19-2016, 07:53 AM No Ronnie, I don't find it so.
FB is no different than this and every other Internet forum.
People get addicted and spend way too much time on both (me included)
FB, Twitter, Snap Chat and similar are the worse things to happen to furums like S-B, THT, SOL,ect..........
MUCH larger scale of different people getting together for different reasons.

FishermanTim 07-19-2016, 10:36 AM All internet forums are pretty much the same.
They start out as an informational tool used to convey needed or required information.
What they end up turning into a means for self-centered egotist, lonely hermits and social miscreants to flood the forums with completely useless information and mindless rants and raves.
Once you get to specific sites like this you see these tendencies get reigned in and more constructive conversations.
All I can say is that if we (the entire planet) were to experience a massive solar flare, all the internet heroes would be thrust into the dark, dark world of having to actually talk to their fellow humans.
Then there's the generations of people that have relied on the internet for all their needs, so they would be completely unable to do most of the most common things in order to survive.
I was talking to a neighbor yesterday regarding this very topic. I asked her "If you were to ask anyone under the age of 25 if they knew how to make anything from scratch, or repair ANYTHING if it broke?" Her look said it all (The look of understanding that we would be screwed if it were to happen).
rphud 07-19-2016, 10:56 AM If today doesn't make you quit, I think you are there for life. Convention fall out for at least the next two weeks.....brutal.
bloocrab 07-19-2016, 01:23 PM This may be a stupid question.....but what ever happened to self-discipline?
Lots of lonely people out there, seems they need social media to help them cope.
Not everyone has a spouse or significant other who has the compassion to simply listen to their daily struggles, issues or to simply chat with. I see just as much of that as I do egotistic-hear-me-roar people, perhaps even more?
If you don't like what you see or read, move on to something else, police-yourself so as not to let it upset you. It's much easier to click the red X than it is to walk away from a real conversation.
Social media is here to stay...not really sure why people stress over it so much. Some people live some pretty funny lives, I find it entertaining sometimes....I mean dammmn, they share enough of it with the world, mini -sitcoms is all.
As a rule I don't ever accept friend requests from people I do t personally know and if someone is a douche I simply mute their posts so I don't have to see their drivel.
If you do that FB can be enjoyable. I do look at it a lot on my phone but it's when I am waiting for a piece of glass to heat up or just killing time.

Rockport24 07-19-2016, 02:00 PM I think bloocrab is dead on. Nobody is forcing you to be on facebook and other social media, but its the way of the world now. It's not a fad, its just part of everyday life now. It's very easy to tailor it to your liking, just block poeple, don't accept friend requests and make you want out of it. You can literally make facebook into anything you want it to be. It doesn't have to be puppies and crazy tinfoil hat stuff if you don't want it to be. For that reason, I think its a great tool to stay informed on things and people I am interested in.
RickBomba 07-19-2016, 04:30 PM Zen-a## S&^t There from Bloo,
It is absolutely true. I love Facebook...but I treat it very vanilla. I don't mention groups (well, maybe this one), politics, jobs, parties, where I am, etc.
I think that has given me a very level playing field for staying in touch with people from the past, and as Bloo said giving friends a forum to vent, to grieve, and to listen.
Now, I am no St. Francis of Assissi. There's been a couple of things in the past that got me fired up (I think three), but these days it's all wife, kids, and smiles.
Whelp, that's it for me. Anyway, if somebody pisses you off, unfriend them. Hell, I even unfriended someone in my own family. No fight, no feud, just happy calls on the old telephone now. Much better.
