View Full Version : Anyone ever hook a seal? on an eel
wdmso 08-02-2016, 11:40 AM So I told my story about the seal and the bass the other night
Well last night same spot a good mix of fish again nothing huge but constant fish for the tide ..
then I get a bump line goes tight and line starts coming off nothing crazy thinking wow this is a bigger fish but no head shakes no surface splash felt no tail slap just a slow and steady pull a good amount of line so now I cup the spool 100% VS 275 65lb braid I stop it and its not taking line and I am not gaining then it moved off again and the braid cut .. Still thinking it was a seal and have fished this spot for years and never heard or seen it happen before now 3 times in 1 week odd I have had small seals follow my eel's but not at 3am thats the issues i find odd

Cool Beans 08-02-2016, 02:11 PM Not sure about this area, but on the west coast off the beach at the submarine base near San Diego, while fishing for halibut, I caught a huge ray, that fought like that. It had a good 4' wing span and it pulled in slow steady waves and was darn near impossible to turn around.
chefchris401 08-02-2016, 02:22 PM Shark or ray would be my guess

Right time of year for this. One summer at Block I couldn't stop anything I hooked with eels. Just a slow steady run. Figured sandbar sharks. I would think hooking a seal they would be all over the place and quick?
wdmso 08-02-2016, 03:20 PM Was thinking Shark.. ray not so much moving water eel high in the water plus had some cut offs during the week also
Seen some stuff on Brown sharks I think my gear could handle a 100lb shark might need to beef up my to leader 80 lb 10ft with a wire trace seeing the braid was cut the area is all sand so must have been off the body
it was hooked on a 7\0 circle maybe go 10\0 with 6 dead eels and sinker slide
I hooked one right in the face with a Polaris popper. I hooked up a small fish and he went after it and ended up with a face full of trebles
spinncognito 08-02-2016, 07:49 PM I hooked one last summer, was a pup who went after my guppy pencil. Landed her but could not get close enough to remove the plug. Posted pics here but the boss man took them down. Sounds like you had a shark.

tattoobob 08-03-2016, 09:12 AM I've hooked some pretty nice sharks on eels, thought I had a fish of a life time
Mike P 08-03-2016, 10:14 AM About 15 or so years ago, at Montauk, I hooked something that dumped 2/3rds of the spool of a Van Staal in about 2 minutes. I finally broke it off to try to save some braid. No doubt either a big shark or a tuna.

OLD GOAT 08-03-2016, 11:02 AM I've watched a 23' Regulator peel off 65lb braid.
