View Full Version : Possibly dumb question
But I was scouting around near brenton Point for some spots to fish this fall (not able to do any casting now) and was wondering if Newport had any regulations that I should know about (like parking and such), outside of the obvious signs and stuff.
fishweewee 08-06-2003, 09:22 AM don't forget to lock your doors, keep valuables out of plain sight, and make sure your alarm is armed.
KLMulder 08-06-2003, 02:01 PM You can get a Newport Fishing parking pass at city hall on or after Sept 1st you will need your drivers lic, reg for your car and $10. I just tryed to get one yesterday. Also on the island you should put a sign in your window that says FISHING it will alert the thugs that you wont be around but the police wont have to get out and walk around looking for teens dirinking and such, they will come by more often ( my observation when fishing from a spot that I can see my truck ) than when you dont have a sign.
blackeye 08-06-2003, 05:16 PM yeah the cliffwalk parking is somewhat limited and a permit is needed after 9PM according to the signs-but I've been putting a note in my window saying that I'm fishing and please do not tow me-haven't been towed yet. There's pleeenty of parking for the reef though, but it can be a pain in the wazzoo to get a spot with all the scup fishers there-but they usually clear out not too long after sundown.
KLMulder 08-06-2003, 05:25 PM I have been dooing the same thing with no problems so far but I was stopped by Newport police last Monday and was told that they can tow your car if you don't have a permit ether out of the park or on the sticker parking only streets. They did say that with the sighn that they would only tow if there have been problems at that location withch in Newport in the summer is a posibility. Note about the permit it is avalible for anyone with $10 you do not need to live in Newport or even RI.
blackeye 08-06-2003, 06:16 PM I don't have much of a chance to go and get a permit-guess I'll hope for the best. Probly will suck walking back to the truck with a fish and finding an empty space
Ok thanks guys for the replies. I'll prolly see about getting a pass, just to be safe. And god help the thug I catch messing with my ride :D Scuppers shouldnt too much of an issue either as I do most of my work after hours anyway.
BigFish 08-07-2003, 02:45 PM Questions are never dumb....just the people who need to ask them!:laugha: :hihi: Just kidding Vio....just my take on the "there is no such thing as a stupid question" thing.:jump:
rwilhelm 08-07-2003, 03:55 PM KL Mulder you lost me when you said they can also tow your car out of the park? You mean if you park in the Brenton Point Park parking lot you could also get towed?
KLMulder 08-09-2003, 04:58 PM Sorry for the delay I was out of town for a few days. To answer your question Yes they can. The park closes at night and if they start having a prob with people down there they will tow.
Buzz-erd 08-10-2003, 10:53 AM I don't fish the Pt much anymore.Its kinda become a hassle.Lotsa
people fish the area these days, because of the easy access. But it is where the big fish hang out.
Plus I can't bring myself to pay $10 bucks for a permit to park in a place I feel I already have the right to park simply for the fact that MY taxes pay for that park.
This is also why I no longer fish Sachuest Pt.,Middletown has taken upon itself to charge $20 for the priviledge of parking there after sundown. And EVERYBODY'S taxes pay for that place as it's a
National Wildlife Refuge.
I've taken to fishing the calmer "backwaters" these days.I like fishing with REALLY LITE tackle.Plus no parking permits or large crowds.I may not be banging the big fish all the time but I do alright sometimes. There are still SOME places on this Island where you might actually be the only person fishing within sight. And I don't have to worry about thieves busting into my truck or stealing it.
surf fishing IN R.I. 08-10-2003, 03:31 PM I have been fishing the drive now and then but never hered
of kids breaking into the cars or maybe i was luckey. Has
things got that bad up there .And i was told by a newport
police officer they only kick out the kids it was ok to park
there if you were fishing .
blackeye 08-10-2003, 04:50 PM got a $20 ticket this morning parked off of bellvue in one of those permit parking only spots-fished from 3am till 8am-no ticket, went back to the truck for a drink and to grab some metal to throw at the blitzing blues, came back an hour later and had a ticket. damn blues screw me in more ways than one!
