use the wind,

That helps but I have seen some guys just blasting plugs well past any distance I can get.

I have seen some impressive casts as well, I think the choice of equipment is key to begin with. Plug choice, line, rod , reel and technique all have to be spot on to get 2/3's the way across. Three quarters is quite an accomplishment. I used to cast more than halfway with a jig on my breakaway 1209 with 65 lb braid, not anymore, in fact I have not landed a fish in the canal this year.

Over rated in my opinion......cast as far as you can....fish are usually in closer anyway.......not the rule but almost always!

My set up when I just started was a Ugly stick 9 foot with a Penn 6500ss and 50 pound Power Pro, that set up could cast a 2 to 3 oz plug very far

long casting is a little different than just casting.
I've fished conventional for over sixty five years and can remember trying out long casting in my mid-late forties . Different ball game.
Reels must run a lot faster, line a lot finer, rods power zoned to send input energy back out the tip and timing, timing, timing
Although I'm nowhere near the front of the pack I still like to make an outfit dance

I was thinking it has a lot to do with the gear. For instance very thin low pound test <40# braid

Is all about the equipments.loading the rod and releasing. But the most important thing is footing.I see lots of guys have a bad foot stand when casting.I'm not there yet but close.

Most guys who cast that far are the ones who will work a popper 3 feet in front of you.. and your 30 yards from him . then complain when you catch their line or run down the access road saying fish on because they lost all the leverage with that monster cast :kewl:
