I had 2 fish to the kayak that I have no Idea what they are, both was caught on a clown colored bomber. 1'st one weighed about 9lb, maybee a little less. The second I do not know the weight.

I was in the middle of what looked like a feeding frenzy, I could see tails and backs break the surface all around me. Both fish jumped airborne as soon as I set the hook. They pulled like bluefish and swam fast pulling out 15 - 20 yard of line on each run.

I tried to make a drawing to show what the fish looked like. There was some that looked larger than the 2 I hooked into. (They had more of the bumps near the tail than what I put there and the head shape was close to what I have in the drawing) sorry 'bout the bad drawing.

Looks like a bonito

The pic looks like a cross between a porgy and a bonito --- Nils, what was the color of the fish, green back with stripes or mackeral pattern, adn any teeth??

It was dark color, black / gray silver. Maybe a little skinnier than the picture. It looked like a porgy face, but it was rounder than a porgy. It had teth, I had to pull the lip down to see them. They looked sharp , triangular, point up.

I got it outside of Misquamicut state beach.

Do you have a photo?

If the body shape is accurate, I'd say they are jacks. Pretty rare up there, but not unheard of.

There are reports of false albies in LI sound. But a false albie would peel off more than 20yds. Either way, sounds like you had some fun!

a couple years ago i was at weekapaug b&t and a guy came in with two fish he said he got at the end of the weekapuag beachway they were yellow tail jacks also over the last couple years there have been trigger fish caught in that area

That picture looks close, color is not what i remember. I'm not good at drawing pictures on the computer. I changed the tail a little and the head. so this picture are closer to what I saw.

I wish I had kept it now. It looked like a school of them feeding on small bait. I could see tails and fins in the water all around the kayak. Some looked a lot bigger than the one I got, judging by the size of the fins and the distance between the front fin and the tail fin.

I didnt bring the camera that day because I had rolled the yak a couple of times that day in the surf, waves were 3-4' close to shore and nice rollers when I got out a 1/4 mile from shore. I could see bait jumping out of the water 100 yd's to each side of me and I was drifting in the middle of this for 15 - 20 minutes. Before I had the fish on I thought it was a blue fish blitz.

As for the first one I hooked into, the fish jumped straight into the air. Then took off pulling out line for 25-30 seconds, at this time the yak was up to the same speed as the fish pulling me and I was pulled around for 10 to 15 minutes. I could reel in line everytime the fish slowed or turned. When I got the fish close (25-30 minutes) it pulled of 15-20 yd of line in a fast run darting in circles everytime I got it close to the yak. This happened at least 10 times before I could grab the fish with the lip gripper. Then it took almost 5 minutes of moving the fish back and forth under water before the fish took off.

I bet it was a kind of jack, there are a bunch of sub-speices. It it was a albi you would say it was tuna-like.

Next time you catch something like that take it home (or to a tackle shop) to find out what it is.

Sounds like either an Amberjack http://www.bajadestinations.com/fishid/amberjack/amberjack.jpg or Jack Crevalle http://costaricasailfish.com/photos/images/jack-crevalle.jpg. Do a google search under "Images" and you should be able to tell which one it was. It's not uncommon to catch either in New England waters this time of year.

Looks like either a trigger fish or juvenal jack crevalle. Triggers are common around here at this time of year. Jacks are less common but I've caught a few.

That is a Jack for sure...caught them in Florida! It is definately not a trigger fish. I fished for them in FLA in schools just like boiling bluefish

I'd love to have jacks up here in mass... they are a darn tough fish and fairly user friendly. They've bailed me out of a couple bad fishing days in FL.

Jack crevalle have that pretty distinct long whispy pectoral fin... and they do have little teeth like you described.

Albies don't really have much for teeth... bonito do but they don't really have the lips... don't they have a pretty bony mouth.

Anyone have a pic of a spanish mackerel... I know they get them off Great Pt in Nantucket more and more frequently. They are slimmer than the jacks.

Spanish macks look more like bonita than jacks. They have dots on their sides.

The most likely Black/Grey looking fish out there right now with bumps on its back would be the False Albie. It also sounds like Albies based on your description of the fight. The picture looks like someone drew it on an etch-a Sketch and doesn't look like anything I can think of.

Saltydog - cool your jets fer crying out loud. Like Zac said, it is a DB attachment error which happens on occasion when going way back on files. So Nils didn't post that pic, he posted a different one that could not be found and the server put up what it thought was the right file... Hence the pic of the two blond non-fish :hihi:

Guys, look at the date of the original thread.......is why the server can't pull up the original pics.

The color sounds like a King Mack and there were a lot between MV and Nantucket recently...Plenty were caught in the four foot range...all the way to the point that some Derby regulars from the Island went crazy and stopped fishin for derby species and started fishing for Kings...

there were also plenty of Spanish MAcks, but most Spanish have the
dots down the side that would have been mentioned in the description
