I bought all the ingredients except for the screw cap top. Just need to put them together. Where did you find the top?

Funny enough, I was about to start it until I noticed the necessity of the screw-on lid as well. If anybody knows of a source for those screw on lids, please let us know.

You can all use a snap on cover but they are a pain in the a$$!! The screw on cover is the way to go. Here is a link to go to them:

If you type in Gamma Seal in Yahoo search you will find some other sites that have them also. This is one of the cheaper sites, but there others that offer different colors.

Not sure what the receipe called for, but I made an eel bucket about 5 years ago out of the old salad dressing/ mayo plastic jugs. I attached the lid via a cord. I have never had a problem with it being a snap cover. The big thing I have found with a good eel bucket is to make sure you drill large enough holes in the cover to allow the water/ slime to run out. Also, to drill the holes from the inside of the cover out. If you drill them from the outside in, it leaves little lips that trap the water/ slime in when you rinse your eels. I drilled wholes in the side and attached loops of cord with knots on the inside then clipped an old duffle bag strap onto the loops for slinging over my shoulder. Also, I found that you are better off not drilling holes in the bottom for drainage. If you do this, the slime runs down your leg and can make for some real stinky waders. Also it prevents you from being able to toss your eel bucket in the fridge when you get home as the slime will definately tick off the better half. I have kept eels alive for more than a week in my eel bucket by just periodically rinsing them off and draining ALL the water/ slime out.

My buddy came up with a good solution for a bucket too. He uses one of those buckets/ jars that the weight gainer/ workout supplement stuff comes in. They have screw on caps. Just attach the cover with a section of cord to prevent loss.

Have aslo seen guys using the little soft lunch cooler things, but then you have to worry about a zipper clogging with sand or corroding on thesalt water.
Have found that with the mash bag method, I rarely am standing in the water deep enough for the eels to be in the water. Then they are air drying the whole night, I have them banging off my leg as I walk all night, and then I would have eel slime all over my waders.
If I fished dead eels, I could just put them in a zip lock bag and store them in my waders so I always had them with me.
Just my opinion about eel maintenance. Sorry to hi/jack the thread.:smash:

I made one the week you posted it and its a pretty awesome thing you came up with!My eels stayed alive for a week and a half , all I did was rinse them off when the ice was completely melted and added more ice. I didn't drill holes in the bottom bucket though as I keep it in my garage where it is cool as to slow down the melting process but I did drill a 1 inch hole and installed a pvc water pipe and attached a 3' hose to that so I could have it drain outside my garage into the driveway. All I have to do is hose down the driveway when I change the ice, oh ... I did attach one of my wifes knee high's to the end of the hose to trap the slime....works flawlessly!

Thanks for the new gear and as it was said before...you should patent this unit and quit your job, 2 of my friends want one when I have a chance to make them.

Hope all you catch out there is keepers!

Holy engineered accessory adapters batman! Did you turbo charge that baby with a turbine slime blower and automatic agitation device?

Eels in the frigde? My chick made me get a separate freezer for the garage for anything oceanic. Doesn't want even a hint of salt air on her Omaha steaks.

My wife loves fishing so much that she bought me some Tupperware containers for my eels, ziplock baggies for the squid (which I package in 10 per bag), plastic containers for my chunks of scup and herring, and last but not least...she did make me get a freezer just for the saltwater goodies. She told me if I put any of that in her freezer and she found it then I'd wake up with it after she thawed it all out and dumped it on me. Guess I acn't have it all made in the shade!

Well I bought 2 dozen eels 13 days ago, I have them in my keep cold eel bucket and I have lost only 3 so far!!
I bought a dozen the other day and I have them in another buckert and have lost 1 so far.
But with all this surf I think I will lose them all or most of them by the time I can get out there. They must be getting hungry!! This will make a good test to see just how long they will last!! I wish I had a morring or secure dock to tie them to. they would last then.

Teaser - hope you are still around.

Your wife is one smart cookie.
She didn't want bait in the food frigde.
She spent money on simple things for you - plastic boxes and bags.
She fooled you into buying a bait fridge AND
when you got all the bait the hell out of her fridge she laid down the law.

Well done!
she gots you trained well!!

So, when will she set you up with a fish cleaning station out back too?
... Atually that might not be a bad idea... bild a little shed with a cleaning station and baitfridge undre the eaves outside.
Store your gear and tools inside - keep it all nice and neat plus have a place to go and be out of the way yet at home at the same time!!
