So, I was walking along the canal over the weekend, and there was a guy there gill netting... I've not seen this before on the canal. I asked him what he was fishing for, and he said 'stripers'. To the best of my knowledge, you can't do this, even with a license.

Illegal. A quick perusal of Mass regs seem to indicate that the length of a gill net determines whether a license is required, and then only menhaden, sea herring, and mackeral can be caught. This isn't absolute; I may have missed something.

I would have called the clam cops and let them decide.

No idea what that means.

In Rhode Island it's the Department of Enviromental Managment (DEM)

Not sure what it's called in mass.

Poacher patrol.

MA EP # 800-632-8075. Add it to your contacts. I've called it a couple times when I seen guys breaking the law.

Maybe that guy is a Native Mass-hole and is subsistence fishing.

I see guys doing it to catch bait(sandeels) then they fish those for stripers, but never seen anyone trying to net stripers.

Yeah, it was probably Liz Warren who was subsistence fishing to get some protein for her tribe.
