MLB Hall of Fame has voted to uphold the lifetime ban for Pete Rose....

I say he should be in.....

Why the ban? Steroids ? I put him up there as one of the most iconic pitchers of my youth. He's up there next to Larry Bird in my book.

His accomplishments should be noted in the hof. He should NOT be enshrined as he was a degenerate gambler who betted on games he had an influence on- i'm sure he didn't only bet on games he managed but also in his playing days as well.

Years ago one of the big pubs, I forget which one, had a pretty intensively researched account of the whole Pete Rose saga. What really sticks out is how he kept denying and denying and denying that he bet on baseball even when they had his gambling receipts and just about all the other needed evidence to build a strong case. It really was kind of a sad story. Too bad because he had such a long great career.

Maybe something like Afterhours said, recognize the baseball accomplishment, but put an asterisk next to the name of the man. Too bad because Charlie Hustle was a guy a lot of kids looked up to for how hard he played the game.

Do you think Bill Belichik should go into the hall? I mean the whole cheating thing.

I think its Bull#^&#^&#^&#^&....but their are plenty of people that will say he shouldn't go in. Over what he did to supposedly influence games.

Rose isn't in because he never apologized for doing it...that's it. So it isn't really the act that kept him out...it was the lack of contrition.

I don't know if I buy that one. If that was him holding back, I'd hate to see what he could have accomplished if he went full tilt.

you do mean the filming of opposing coaches from non approved areas right? i'm sure that had a big influence on games....

Oh, I think Bill is a lock for the HoF.

But my point is why shouldn't Pete go in if Bill is going in. They were both found to have done something questionable to the "integrity" of the game.

And So what if Pete bet on games....any proof he did anything to change the outcome of a game?

He belongs in just from his resume as a player.

If he was betting as a coach he gets fired.

Absolutely in !!!
The guy is one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game.
Also, no one is going to tell me he bet as a player, certainly never bet for his team to loose a game.
The guy (as a player) was 150% at verything he did as a player, from from playing the field to running down to first base after a walk !

Are you seriously comparing gambling on your own sport with one time breaking a rule where you tape defensive signals from field level instead of up higher under cover? The tape from that Jets game never was used to influence games, it was turned in.

If you ask me, it is held against Pete that he denied it for so long and hard. One would think the accomplishments on the field are what make an athlete a hall of famer, but if he is banned, he is banned.

Yes, Yes I am....I'm showing the ridiculousness of this by comparing a similarly ridiculous example. And I guarantee you that when Bill's time comes up to get inducted, there will be a few select idiots bringing this exact argument up.

and gambling on your sports is no big deal as long as you aren't throwing games to win. The way Rose played the game, he obviously wasn't trying to throw anything.

If you ask me, it is held against Pete that he denied it for so long and hard.

I'm pretty sure I said the same thing above.

I know and I agreed with those points, I understand your point about not throwing games but that can't be proven and fact is he was banned for life. He screwed himself and made it worse.

I just did not get your point of the ridiculousness

True, there will be haters bring up spygate like it is some kind of detrimental thing.

I think its time! His play on the field is undeniably HOF worthy! He has paid the price for his transgressions! As far as comparing him to Shoeless Joe Jackson I don't see the two being at all similar! Joe Jackson was paid to throw the World Series which I find quite a bit more egregious than simply betting on games you are involved in and mind you.......there was no mention or proof of him throwing any games at all! Feel free to disagree......I think the games all-time hit leader deserves to be in!

A rule is a rule
banned is banned

to expand on that a bit

both players were worthy of the Hall prior to their transgressions or supposed transgressions. Punishment was banned lifetime. I am not sure how the price has been paid.
So if a player was worthy before being banned and gets in, others should also as that sets a precedent.

As I said I find their suspensions to be quite different one from the other! That said Joe Jackson paid his price......he died long ago! Put him in the hall and put it on his plaque......but put him in!

Rose isn't in the HOF because he committed the only truly unforgiveable sin in professional sports, he gambled...and he didn't just gamble, he gambled on games he directly influenced as a player/manager...His defense was that he always bet on the Reds to win, but what about the games he didn't bet on??...when you've got a rep as a degenerate gambler and don't bet on a game you're involved in, doesn't that say just as much as the games you bet on to win???...
