I just hear this on the news last night. Terrible tragedy - that maybe could have been avoided.

9 Children and 3 adults in an 18' boat on Buzzards Bay is not a wise decision. I can almost guaranty that boat is not rated for 12 persons. Very sad situation for the family.
Things like this make for a good argument for mandatory Boating Safety Courses. It wouldn't eliminate this from happening altogether, but certainly would reduce the chances by educating the general public on the potential dangers.

Even if not fishing, I'd never have 7 people on board....(short of helping a fellow boater in need).

I'm thinking they were going from "point A" to "point B".....but even then,...:hs:

Sad to say, but that's a memory that'll haunt them forever.
Sincere condolences to all families involved....such a tragic event.

Very sad, this is where I do the majority of my boat fishing. I truly believe when people boat in buzzards bay they kind of get a false sense of security because of its proximity to dry land. The weather can change in a minute. I feel awful for all those involved, but sadly this probably could've been avoided.

My Sea Hunt is 21' and rated for 6 people MAX! I NEVER have more than 3 people and myself onboard.

That being said, I can't believe none of the adults even thought for a second that there might just be too many people on that boat?

You can be certain that when it came time to abandon ship the adults were probably first to leave. (I say this because the child was trapped UNDER the capsized boat).

That's what I'm saying Paul. Like you, folks need to use their heads. I've never seen an 18' boat rated for 12 persons. And then whatever the boat is rated for, many people don't factor in the amount of gear they have on board. So even if it's rated for 6 persons, that doesn't mean to load up 6 people and a ton of gear on top of that. A little education goes a long way.

I also give credit to the EPO that dove in with full uniform on to save that little boy. He could have easily lost his own life in the effort. The tragic outcome has probably hit him very hard.

Just can't imagine trying to navigate anywhere with more than the rated capacity of the boat and even that I personally feel is a stretch for a lot of smaller boats. Stupid, careless decision that cost someone a good nights sleep for the rest of their lives.

We should lighten up on the "stupid" talk.......I'm guessing someone asked "aren't there too many people on the boat".......and some unfortunate survivor (perhaps the owner/captain) said..."don't worry about it, get in".....As much of a poor choice that was, I pity that poor guy. Something he'll have to live with forever.....people commit suicide for lesser things.

If stupidity doesn't qualify, how about ignorance or arrogance?

They all tend to end up with similar results, that being an innocent live lost.

I would venture to guess that since no one here knows the people involved, and can't speak directly for the mentality of the boat owner/operator, that stupidity is the first thought that comes to mind.

Otherwise it would be more of a "criminal" train of thought, as "The person KNEW the boat's limitations but chose to overload it anyway, regardless of the possible consequences!"

But I digress.....the bottom line is that some innocent child died because of a tragic accident that could/should have never happened.

Just curious, you're leaving the harbor and you see that boat heading out, what do you do?
I boat quite a bit, and have been for 40 years, and have seen some stupid stuff - but I don't think I would have done anything except shake my head.

Good question, had someone dropped a dime on the harbormaster, maybe that's a life saved and the dumb ass gets a citation to remind him laws are there to protect lives.

I have done a number of boat deliveries over the years. One that sticks in my mind was bringing a 40' racing sloop from Maine to Newport. All had been smooth through a westbound canal passage. Upon exiting the canal we were hit with a wall of water due to tide change and a building afternoon southwesterly. This was a very different boat from the one in question, but getting tossed around with a keel and a great deal more tonnage makes me think they had no idea what conditions they could encounter in that area. An overloaded boat like that in the same conditions I encountered that day would have no chance.....

Yup,broke my T-top on the Parker one time in similar conditions.

A few years ago, I came through the channel between Prudence and Patience Island. It was a dropping Moon tide with a strong SW wind. When I hit the opening on exit I almost $hit. Waves were literally standing up 4 feet. I made a hasty retreat and went around the West side of Patience.

I believe it. Out front between kettlebottom and castle hill is the same thing. I used to go wild on those rides in my Laser when I was a kid.

I was fishing the ditch down that end when it happened. Could tell it was a really bad situation. CG and Wareham police boats flying by, helicopter circling above. Was having a decent outing, but couldn't enjoy it because you knew something bad happened. Talked to my mother on the phone and she said it was all over the news.

Never should've been that many people (kids) on that boat. Trying to go east on a mid west tide. Completely avoidable IMO. That person will undoubtedly have to live with it for the rest of his life, but so will everyone else. i still think he should be charged with manslaughter or at the very least negligence or whatever the appropriate charge would be.

You get a stif SW wind against all that water coming out of the canal and it can just blow up in minutes...

My first boat, (after the canoe :-) ) 24' double planked Chris craft sea sciff with a keel..
One wave grabbed the keel and layed the gun wall down enough for water to come over it,,, punched it and started a turn the next wave righted me....
My mistake ( operator error) was not using enough power,,, I goosed her , took a few over the bow but made it into Wareham ...

Then cleaned out my draws...
