View Full Version : Bitcoin revisited
nightfighter 08-14-2017, 06:59 AM Broke through $4000....... Still intrigued. Still haven't found a way to invest in it. Price has skyrocketed over past four months and it has designated into two classes of Bitcoin. Old threads here reveal some interesting predictions. I will find a way to get involved, even if to a very limited scale. It could have legs in ten years....

It could also be confiscated as it is used to support sterile transactions of terrorists, organized crime (spyware/malware), and foreign interference peddling

Wait, anonymous money? Nobody would ever do anything illegal with that ; ) - Ooops, gotta go launder my laundry ; )
Yes, Bitcoin is often used for illegal activities. Start here:

GBTC is a viable option if you get by the 2% mgt fee they charge for doing nothing.... Of course that pales in comparison to the >85% premium one has to pay..... Investors in bitcoin have made some life changing gains over the past year plus. But as a classically trained economist/investment advisor, there are some very red flags flying....
Chef, can you tell me you would ever consider paying 85% premium for anything? Just presenting the other side of the risk coin.
cheferson 09-01-2017, 08:00 AM Gbtc is way over priced for the amount they actually hold, I agree 100% . Thing is Gbtc is the easiest in for the average Joe . Soon as more options are available , it will tank .
Just buy actual Bitcoin in person or from an exchange like Coinbase .

nightfighter 09-01-2017, 09:08 AM GBTC down 23.88% on the day at 0952 EST.....
cheferson 09-01-2017, 09:37 AM GBTC down 23.88% on the day at 0952 EST.....
Lol , saw that ! Only down 17% now . I imagine lots of early adopters and investors to take profit as the price closes in on 5 k .
Check out ethereum , Monero and litecoin

People made a killing collecting and selling beanie babies and Pokémon cards too.
The higher the risk, the higher the reward or the loss.

I wish,
nightfighter 12-10-2017, 10:16 PM $16400 at 10 pm up 1800..... after commencing trading on CBOE today. Much of the recent gains are on anticipation of participation IMO. Air, fluff, smoke and mirrors, call it what you will. But some have and will make money, and some will lose BIG........ Too few whales control too large a percentage of the overall market. I have seen one report that says 1000 people own 40%. They all know each other and talk, and just want to make money. So they don't want to sell a large portion and kill the price. And they can all "conspire" for lack of a better word, because as a currency, it isn't fraud to share information as it would be if you held a controlling position in a publicly traded company. It just reeks of the possibility for a pump and dump. I am out.... and was never in.
PRBuzz 12-12-2017, 09:06 AM for anyone even thinking about cryptocurrencies investing, start by opening an account in Coinbase (Coinbase is FDIC insured for US customers up to $250,000, for security breach or employee theft, and keeps only 2% of its currency online). Coinbase directly trade in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin. Invest any amount you can afford (think about 1-2% portfolio and that in worse case you can afford to lose 100%, always possible). Don't think about buyin whole "coins", these things trade in units that go out 6-8 decimal places so $10-100's can be invested as easily as $1000's. The are over 200 currencies in the world now. Stop thinking and go for it, I did but I also have a high tolerance for risk. I also have had help...not sure if he is on this board ;)

Ripple is actually a bad example , been around since 2004 ... also they have american express on board and lots of banks using their blockchain
Lots of ICO's are total bs , but some are not . All this seems crazy, but hey look at a smart phones today . Did you see that coming 20 years ago?

To risky for a retired guy. I worked all my life and we live comfortably. I'm not going to risk my assets on this stuff. Not saying people are not getting rich on it because they are. I'm just too conservative (at least with my money) to risk it.
A friend of mine grew up as a 1%er. Parents were LOADED. He could have become anything he wanted in life as his parents could have placed him in any good college he chose. Long story short, his dad put everything they owned in an investment that was sure to explode. The story ends with his parents loosing everything, including their house and my friend is now a nail banger framing houses.
Kudos to Chef, but I make my money with my hands and with extreme caution. Call me the tortoise.

nightfighter 12-18-2017, 05:35 PM GBTC today....
$3,463.00
764.00 28.31%
So if I did not buy in on 9/1/17 when it was trading around 800, what would make me buy in when it goes up almost 800 in a day? Opportunity lost? Absolutely. Not going to say that it doesn't bother me a little bit, but there is nothing in the story that is any more compelling now than there was back then. Besides, I would have already been long out of it having taken a profit anyway. No way I could even consider establishing an initial position at this level...
Of course if it is at 10k in March I will be kicking myself a little bit, but I can only act with the information I have in front of me now.

Your friends dad is an idiot ... I’d never or suggest anyone put a huge percentage of your savings in altcoins . 1-3 % would be a smart move though .

nightfighter 12-19-2017, 10:02 AM And another red flag...
Crypto Company CRCW has had its stock trading suspended by SEC until Jan 3 2018 pending investigation of its promotion and compensation.... Stock was ten bucks in October. Closed at 575 before suspension. Reminds me of some pot stock suspensions that left shareholders holding the bag....
nightfighter 12-21-2017, 05:30 PM GBTC today...
1,772.00
-610.995 -25.64%
So I could buy twice as much as.... just three days ago....
And another sure sign that this cryptomania has reached a frenzy that will rob you; Long Island Iced Tea skyrocketed 4X after changing its name and focus to Long Blockchain.... I actually thought it was a joke when I first read the report. Maybe John should rename the site Striped-Blockchain.... he will be able to sell it for millions! Tomorrow!
PaulS 12-22-2017, 09:43 AM Ross, why is it that everyone who says they invest in schemes like this never lose $, you only hear of them making $?
It’s hard to post when you are in the fetal position under your desk.

nightfighter 12-22-2017, 01:53 PM Ross, why is it that everyone who says they invest in schemes like this never lose $, you only hear of them making $?
Pride and ego mostly. I made good money in Go Pro when it came out. Took a profit. Went back in pretty heavily on momentum, added to it on a couple pull backs, and ended up losing 75% of the capital invested plus the original profit. Still used the loss to offset gains as recently as last year. Of course you cant do that in a retirement account...
Emotion can lead to massive errors in judgement when it comes to investing. Chasing a stock is no different from the gambler trying to make up losses from the 1 o'clock NFL games by going in heavy on the late games. I do have >50% in a single position, but it is a large cap and I am up > 125%, which skews the pie. Usually have no more than 10% in a single position when establishing it. These folks who say they put it all in on Bitcoin, or whatever, are either lying or have the ability to live with a ton more risk than anyone I know personally.
Crypto market cratering some more today, though most trading is done for the day at this hour as majority of traders are in the bars...
PaulS 12-22-2017, 02:00 PM Amazing that the fundamentals can change that much in a day LOL

nightfighter 01-17-2018, 09:58 AM I have received three calls today about the cratering bitcoin prices. Two from kids in their twenties who were previously the greatest investors ever, and one from a friend who went in pretty heavy at his kid's urging. I could only offer what I know. There are regulatory issues on the horizon that may have adverse effect on price. In particular, the Koreans considering banning the trading and ownership in cryptocurrencies. And then there is the impending first expiration of futures contracts on the commodities exchanges. All negatives in my view. Price has been halved from its very recent high of 19500. It is at 9545 as I type this, down +10% on the day, or over 1000 bucks... They were not happy when I said that I could see this thing getting cut in half again from this level. They are not having a good day.....
nightfighter 01-17-2018, 10:02 AM For fair comparison to previously quoted investments, GBTC is at 1440
Was 3463 on 12/18/17
Down just over 50% this month. Ouch.

The one thing Chef said that proved 100% correct was that when more options of crypto currency became available, this one would take a nose dive.

You are doing very well then, trading these new currencies. Congrats! But I don't think you could quote posts where "dead, done, and scam" were stated here. Still some serious questions about bitcoin, some serious money made, and some serious money lost. Glad to hear you always managed to be on the plus side. I have never had the pleasure to meet someone who has been able to accomplish that.
nightfighter 08-08-2018, 06:53 PM Chef, I sincerely hope you are out and did not ride this thing down.....

I don't know. I am not going to gamble on it but with RUS/China playing games on US currency it might not be bad.
