View Full Version : FG Knot simplified.
JFigliuolo 11-02-2017, 06:59 AM I used to think the FG knot was great, but too hard to tie at home... forget about even THINKING about tying it on the boat. Until I saw this video.
Not much (if any) harder than a double uni.

After this first 1-2 times it's wicked easy.

Clammer 11-02-2017, 02:49 PM idiot proof ??? Guess I,ll try it :kewl:

A Palomar serves a different purpose than the FG knot which is used to connect braid to mono leader. The FG is a significant advance (much smaller profile and stronger) over uni-uni or albright variations if you plan to cast the knot through guides. Does away with a swivel and lets you use a much longer leader for abrasion protection and landing fish. I do notice the line about 6" from the knot frays after a while, however, probably because of overrun while the knot goes through the guides.

piemma 11-03-2017, 06:11 AM My thoughts.
1. I always have used an Albright knot for braid to mono leader connection on my conventional. I usually have a 10' to 12', 50# mono leader so the knot never gets through the guides. I'm only talking on the boat rods.
2. I have always used a swivel between the braid and the mono leader on spinning outfits. If you are using eels without a swivel I think you are asking for line twist and problems. Even with plugs there is considerably more chance of line twist without a swivel.
I am only referencing boat rods. With the surf rods I never fish conventional and always use a swivel regardless of the reel being used, VS, Penn. I use to fish Calcutta, Abu 7000, Penn 965 conventionals is the surf but found that I could get better results without the headaches of conventionals in the dark in the surf by using spinning reels.
3. I always tie direct and have not used a snap in 30 years. I always put a split ring on the nose of my plugs for better action.
ProfessorM 11-04-2017, 07:29 PM I think I got it down now. Practiced it while home with the flu a couple weeks ago and used it last weekend. Worked good and so stream line.

Clammer 11-04-2017, 09:08 PM NO MATTER what knots I tie ,I keep getting pig tails ......must be the line after almost 60 years ><>:lasso:
chefchris401 11-04-2017, 10:37 PM I’ve always used a swivel on set ups
If I do tie direct braid to mono I use a slim beauty knot, never had an issue and very easy and clean
