Only for a couple of selfish reasons. Skiing and ice fishing can help shake the shack nasties any time.

We gotta be getting close out here in central mass. I'm waiting for the skinny neighbor kid to get out on the ice. The 15 day forecast looks pretty good except for a couple days. I hope to be on the ice xmas day.

You must not use much gas to actually heat your shop in the winter huh. What are you running at like 2200’f?

Sometimes 2300 when I am filling up my furnace. Working temp is 2000. I idle it down at night to 1850. It’s the only heat source for my shop and it’s hard to regulate the temp in the building. All or nothing....

Hate this crap, played golf Xmass eve day and that might be it for a while, but I'm hesitant to dig out the boards. Much as I used to love skiing, I have no desire to drive two hours, shell out $75 to ski when it's in the single digits.

I remember one very cold morning at Sunday River, when I popped out early for first tracks, short couple hundred yard run out of the hotel to the bottom of the lift and about two towers up the lift stops for over an hour. Was frozen to the core by the time I got to the top, then later in the pm hit some ice I didn't see and severely herniated a disc requiring surgery a few months later; not my best weekend.

Looks like a lot of gym time this week.

a little different story where I fish... 18 -20"" of ice...big ice flows pushing up on the shore...I had to use a chain saw to cut a ramp for the 4 wheeler... edges are drifted in some places 4 -5'... others are bare ice...

Took a floating holiday ( no pun intended) yesterday to explore a part of lake Winnipesauke I haven't fished in about five years because we just haven't had the ice.. and it's too far to walk...we had 10" of solid clear ice on the "thin" areas...my primary target was rainbows .. I did a little laker fishing and landed one that was about 20" ( length of the scoop) and lost 2 to the rocks before adding a small float to the line to keep it suspended during the long initial run ... my phone was on the charger in my pop up when I got the laker so no picture...we are limited to 2 fishing devices each on Winni so prospecting is slow...

And the scenery ...

Rolled in corn meal pan fried in butter on an open fire, life is good... :-)

We ALWAYS have a January thaw, and it ALWAYS gets the recurring questions of ice safety.

Here's one way to look at it...

It took how many days of sub freezing days to form the ice we have? (almost 2 weeks?)
Do you think one warm/wet day can melt all that snow and ice?

NO.

What will most likely happen is that the snow cover will be first to go, and maybe, MAYBE an inch of ice will follow.

Then most standing water will refreeze late Saturday and Sunday.

I like your thinking,,, but walking through slush is unnerving on the ponds... :-)
