I was thinking about giving this a try this winter. What would be a good basic set up for a rookie? Do I need a freshwater license? Any other helpful info would be great.

Are gold safty gear...a sled for carrying gear is nice...but 5 gallon bucket or pack basket can suffice... License auger traps & jigging stick (with bait for whichever you plan to use) ice scoop Ice picks (for safety) Ice cleats (for walking on ice something to sit on something to haul your gear (a sled is most popular) proper clothing WITH spares (just in case) Hot food/drink (I'd save the booze for when you get home) Itinerary (Let someone know where you will be going!)
