I'll start. The Cows have come home. The first fish is still swimming. The second fish bent the barb of the belly treble into itself so it was impossible to unhook (I never had that happen before?) By the time I was able to cut the hook. It was too late.

I am NO WAY doubting the pics... but that second one one looks incredibly photo shopped/cropped (at least to me) If you were some random, I'd swear it was BS. Just goes to show how you never know!

Rappin Mikey,
Greenfield High School!? I've been a member of CC of Greenfield for over 30 years. Sadly resigned this year, too many logistics to get there and back from the South Shore. My son lives about a mile from the course.
Did you show the fish to the kids?
Take care.

Rappin Mikey
05-15-2018, 09:35 AM
I did show the kids the fish. It makes for a great lesson on anadromous fish every year. I always bring a print out from the fish lift that shows the totals of each species lifted over the dam since 1955. The stripers only started showing up in the early 80s once the Enfield dam really started to break down.

First trip in the yak today was a short one, but managed a quick limit, the difference was switching over to one of my 5" split tails in a light pink with red fleck on a 1" jig. Prior to that I was using lighter gear which I prefer, but the bite was all small fish until I upsized.

Upper BB temps dropped about 3 degrees from early in the week, so yesterday was very tough fishing, in fact I was lucky to get these three with so few fish marked. Said hello to Big Fish Larry and his friend Chris on the way out, as they were heading in after a tough morning. Early spring I like the incoming, which I hope is bringing in some fresh fish, but not so yesterday.

Herring in various states of decomposition and roe. It is tough seeing those fish go belly up after giving them fish CPR for five or more minutes.

The wind was blowing us off our drift, and I thought it was going to be necessary to deploy the new drift chute I picked up for this season.
Never got a chance as the sea bass were aggressive and hitting as soon as the jigs were lowered.
Had a good laugh...watching her battle a nice 23"....thought she was going to ask for help.

She boated it and said "I think its bigger than yours"
I replied "Well maybe just an inch or two"....

I pulled a herring out of this one's mouth before I released her. They are eating well this year. Even though the herring numbers are way down from 20-30 years ago, This is the strongest number as far as herring entering the fish lift in 14 years.

Inside B.B. this morning in pea soup and limit on sea bass in about ten casts, man are they thick and lots of big males, took a friend in his yak to experience some fast fishing and good eating (he’s a freshwater guy).

Uploaded pics of my old friend who normally avoids the salt in his sit in, but due to the conditions expected, I convinced him he'd have a ball and go home with five tasty fish. Conditions were perfect for him, although leaning over to land one nice fish after the other does still present some challenge in a sit in.

set out my free swimming pogie I hook up!!! nice 30 in fish .. now I am thinking ok they most be cruising the flats set out my 2nd pogie 10 mins later I have a small fish chasing it on top takes a swipe at it . then a 2nd fish blasted the pogie and I was hooked up 46 in 38 lbs beast with fresh sea lice sadly she inhaled that pogie and was gut hooked .

2018 has been a great year... schoolies arrived last month and the fishing has been hot everywhere ever since.... blue back herring are in the river in numbers like the 70's and guess who's come to dinner.. last night( every night this week) I found big girls dripping with lice...lots of them in old haunts they haven't been in in 10 years.. and from what is being posted just about everyone is getting in on them in a variety of places..it's like old times.. I'm really excited about the night time high tides next week... here is one of 11 ( most the same size 40 - 45") I took from 7 until dark.. I haven't used an eel yet... thin profile plugs trolled or cast to surfacing fish and jigs tipped sluggos are doing big business when the fish sound.

How about a fish pic with a covering of panko? Peg wanted fish, I told her I'd be back in two hours, one of the perks of living in south Plymouth during the sea bass run. Left the house at 12:30 and was back by 3 with a nice limit of sea bass and I think they were the tastiest of the year so far. Nothing like BSB rolled in egg and covered in a mix of panko and Chef Paul's blackened red fish magic.

Got Stripers... I will give that recipe a try.....looks tasty!

When I built my boat six years ago, my focus was to target striped-bass. But the sea-bass fishery has really gotten my attention. My family, including my 98 year old MIL, who sits down for dinner with us every night.... agrees that black sea-bass taste and texture is better than striped bass.

I still fish from shore a few times a week, and do pretty well catching stripers, but now its mostly C&R.

My son's girlfriend with her first ever sea-bass.

I have yet to even think about stripers, the window for none top sea is brief and in a week from now they will start to drop out to cooler water and I like to fill my freezers with vacuum sealed sea bass and tog for good eating all winter. Cracks me up when I see in one of the latest OTW articles, that they state sea bass don't freeze well, I suspect they are idiots or not doing it right. Thawed out in their bags slowly in cold water, it's just like fresh all year round; I still have two bags of tog to go from last October. You don't need a lot of Chef Paul's, I dust the top of the panko I have on a small plate then stir it around with a fork to mix before pressing the egg coated filets in, then the key is a hot hot skillet of canola oil.

sure is George... I ran onto a pod of bass 5 miles off the beach on my way back from haddock fishing Saturday.. there had to be acre of busting fish pushing tinker mackerel out of the water... all 18 - 20lbs... at one point I took the hooks off a 6" pencil and just let them knock it around.. it was more fun ( and legal) than catching them... best part... not a boat in sight!.. those fish are headed to Maine!

Nothing is more exciting For me anyway then having a Big Bass chase and smash your pogie free swimming !!! had another productive morning was able to get 3 pogie and hook up with all 3 1st one thew the hook not far from the boat did some serious surface thrashing and head shakes , 2nd fish was smaller not as much drama and the 3rd a 44 in nice lip hook released looked like a dog chasing a cat and the cat lost .. and it was cooler than expected hence my outfit

Nice fish guys

Nice to see these large fish bypass the canal gauntlet. I hope they go home the same way.

It is refreshing that the first push seemingly went around, but the truly large haven’t even arrived yet. Will be interesting to see where they make landfall once they get tired of chasing mojos. Hopefully they’re smart like their younger brethren and will avoid getting stuck in the face multiple times with magic swimmers

You got it! Hit it today for another short one hour tour and while it was blowing hard and bumpy, I had my limit quick and was back home at the filet table in short order. Took me longer to drive to and from and clean fish, than it did to catch the limit. Our favorite meal tonight BSB and sweat potato fries.

Just got back from a trip to the Outer Cape. Great time with the family. I got to catch some nice fish with Ricky on the boat. Played around with the fish on the kayak when I could find them. The schoolies even cooperated from the beach most days for a lot of fun for the kids. Even though most of the beaches were closed to ORV access because of the birds, and the seals and sharks were prowling the surf line, there still is something magical about casting from the outer beaches.

That mass of pogies was from Brant Rock to the Gurnet on Sunday morning about 400 yds off shore. There I was with a 7' schoolie rod; hoping instead of fishing.

Finally got out to chase some large and when I launched and saw how many pogies were slapping the surface, I immediately tied on a large circle hook to have some fun. Unfortunately it was a full hour before the first take and what a take, brought me back to my first 50 up inside Hingham harbor. Damn near pulled the rod out of my hand and I'm glad I had the bail open and my finger on the braid. Two drag screaming runs and me screaming at a center console about to turn into my line. Based on the length and girth of this fish, I think she probably was a solid mid 40 lbs and I was happy to release her for another day. Disappointed that 2 more hours and with bait so thick you could snag them with almost no effort and only one other take. Was nice to feel the large pull me around on the yak, that was different.

Although I've been getting out, quality bass have been elusive for me this year. My son usually out fishes me both in quantity & quality. He's had a blast so far this season but he also wanted to find some larger fish. This weekend worked out great, finally some larger bass.......
